Hey Everyone, I was wondering what methods are standard within the industry to do browser detection in Rails? Is there a gem, library or sample code somewhere that can help determine the browser and apply a class or id to the body element of the (X)HTML? Thanks, I&#39;m just wondering what everyone uses and whether there is accepted method of doing this?

I know that we can get the user.agent and parse that string, but I&#39;m not sure if that is that is an acceptable way to do browser detection.

Also, I&#39;m not trying to debate feature detection here, I&#39;ve read multiple answers for that on StackOverflow, all I&#39;m asking for is what you guys have done.

So thanks to [faunzy][1] on GitHub, I&#39;ve sort of understand a bit about checking the user agent in Rails, but still not sure if this is the best way to go about it in Rails 3. But here is what I&#39;ve gotten so far:

I&#39;m looking for a function which return boolean value if user has mobile browser or not.

I know that I can use `navigator.userAgent` and write that function by using regex, but user-agents are too various for different platforms. I doubt that match all possible devices would be easy, and I think this problem has been solved before many times so there should be some kind of complete solution for such task.

I was looking at [this site](http://detectmobilebrowsers.com), but sadly the script is so cryptic that I have no idea how to use it for my purpose, which is to create a function which return true / false.

I want to bounce users of our web site to an error page if they&#39;re using a version of `Internet Explorer` prior to v9. It&#39;s just not worth our time and money to support `IE pre-v9`. Users of all other non-IE browsers are fine and shouldn&#39;t be bounced. Here&#39;s the proposed code:

To head off a few comments that will probably be coming my way:

 1. Yes, I know that users can forge their `useragent` string. I&#39;m not concerned.
 2. Yes, I know that programming pros prefer sniffing out feature-support instead of browser-type but I don&#39;t feel this approach makes sense in this case. I already know that all (relevant) non-IE browsers support the features that I need and that all `pre-v9 IE` browsers don&#39;t. Checking feature by feature throughout the site would be a waste.
 3. Yes, I know that someone trying to access the site using `IE v1` (or &gt;= 20) wouldn&#39;t get &#39;badBrowser&#39; set to true and the warning page wouldn&#39;t be displayed properly. That&#39;s a risk we&#39;re willing to take.
 4. Yes, I know that Microsoft has &quot;conditional comments&quot; that can be used for precise browser version detection. IE no longer supports conditional comments as of `IE 10`, rendering this approach absolutely useless.

Any other obvious issues to be aware of?

I&#39;ve done some research, and this question has come up, but not in the way I intend.  I&#39;m building a page for a client that is a QR code landing, which is a place to download an application.  So he doesn&#39;t have to print out 2 QR codes on a page, I&#39;d like to detect the current operating system (Apple/Android/Other[not supported]) and modify my elements based on that value.

I&#39;ve looked at the script &quot;detectmobilebrowsers&quot; and that is just aimed at telling whether or not the user is mobile at all, whereas I would like to figure out what operating system the user is running and suggest the best application version.

Other answers I found similar to this question seemed either outdated or unreliable (has no detection for Android tablet browsers), so I&#39;m in search of something new.  How can I achieve this? (Preferably using jQuery - Javascript - PHP in that order).

I use the following PHP script as index for my website.

This script should include a specific page depending on the browser&#39;s language (automatically detected).

This script does not work well with all browsers, so it always includes `index_en.php` for any detected language (the cause of the problem is most probably an issue with some Accept-Language header not being considered).

Detect Browser Language in PHP

Though both are Webkit based browsers, Safari urlencodes quotation marks in the URL while Chrome does not.

Therefore I need to distinguish between these two in JS.

[jQuery&#39;s browser detection docs][1] mark &quot;safari&quot; as deprecated.

Is there a better method or do I just stick with the deprecated value for now?

Detect Safari using jQuery

I am calling a function like the one below by click on divs with a certain class. 

Is there a way I can check when starting the function if a user is using Internet Explorer and abort / cancel it if they are using other browsers so that it only runs for IE users ? The users here would all be on IE8 or higher versions so I would not need to cover IE7 and lower versions.

If I could tell which browser they are using that would be great but is not required.

**Example function:**

I&#39;m developping a JS-app that needs to work both on the client side and the server side (in Javascript on a browser and in Node.js), and I would like to be able to reuse the parts of the code that are used for both sides.

I have found out that `window` was a variable only accessible on Browsers, and `global` in node, so I can detect in which environment the code is executing (assuming that no script declares the `window` variable)

They are two problems.

 1. How should I detect in which browser the code is running. For example, is this code OK. (This code is inline, meaning that it is surrounded by some global code, reused for both environments)

Environment detection: node.js or browser

I had several clients complain yesterday that some code stopped working. Apparently it comes down to plug-ins using the now deprecated `jQuery.browser` which stopped working yesterday when jQuery 1.9 was released.

I (quickly) looked at the 1.9 change docs and it *seems* like they want me to substitute some pretty heavy libraries just for that **one** function.

Is there a recommended lightest weight plug-in or code snippet to restore that functionality?

For what these sites need, it&#39;s very basic; I only need the most basic detection of IE vs FF vs everyone else.

Whilst I know that for now that only IE supports VML, I&#39;d much rather detect functionality than platform.

SVG appears to have a few properties which you can go for: window.SVGAngle for example.

Unfortuntaly - in firefox I can quite happily do all the rendering in VML without error - just nothing happens on screen. It&#39;s quite hard to detect that situation from script.
