Now in command prompt, `notepad++.exe filename.txt` opens the `filename.txt`. But I want to do just `np filename.txt` to open the file. 

I tried using `DOSKEY np=notepad++`. But it is just bringing to the forefront an already opened notepad++ without opening the file. How can I make it open the file?

I found a blog post on `alias` vs. `alias_method`. As shown in the example given in that blog post, I simply want to alias a method to another within the same class. Which should I use? I always see `alias` used, but someone told me `alias_method` is better.

Should I use alias or alias_method?

How do I pass the command line arguments to an alias? Here is a sample:

&lt;pre&gt;
alias mkcd=&#39;mkdir $1; cd $1;&#39;
&lt;/pre&gt;

But in this case the $xx is getting translated at the alias creating time and not at  runtime. I have, however, created a workaround using a shell function (after googling a little) like below:

  mkdir $1
  cd $1
}
&lt;/pre&gt;

Just wanted to know if there is a way to make aliases that accept CL parameters.  
BTW - I use &#39;bash&#39; as my default shell.

I have a shell script which I want to run without using the &quot;sh&quot; or &quot;bash&quot; commands. For example:

I want to use: `script.sh`

I am trying to create an alias that uses both multiple Git commands and positional parameters. There are Stackoverflow pages for each, and it would appear painfully obvious to do both, but I am having trouble.

As an example, I want to switch to branch foo and perform a status.  So in my `.gitconfig`, I have:

      [alias] 
         chs = !sh -c &#39;git checkout $0 &amp;&amp; git status&#39;

which doesn&#39;t work.  Whereas something like this will work.

    chs = !sh -c &#39;git checkout $0&#39;

    echoes = !sh -c &#39;echo hi &amp;&amp; echo bye&#39;

Git Alias - Multiple Commands and Parameters

Up until now I have only used `database.yml` with each parameter called out explicitly, in the file below it uses some characters I do not understand. What does each line and symbol(`&amp;`, `*`, `&lt;&lt;`) mean? How do I read this file?

Just curious about SQL syntax. So if I have

    SELECT 
     itemName as ItemName,
     substring(itemName, 1,1) as FirstLetter,
     Count(itemName)
    FROM table1
    GROUP BY itemName, FirstLetter


This would be incorrect because 

    GROUP BY itemName, FirstLetter 

really should be 

    GROUP BY itemName, substring(itemName, 1,1)

But why can&#39;t we simply use the former for convenience?


SQL - using alias in Group By

Vim is my preferred text editor when I program, and thus I always run into a particularly annoying issue. 

Frequently, when I quickly need to save the buffer and continue on to some other miscellaneous task, I do the typical

However, I always&#160;— what seems to be like more than 50% of the time&#160;— manage to capitalize that&#160;`:w`. Naturally, Vim yells at me because `W` is an invalid command:

My question is how can one **alias colon-commands in Vim**. Particularly, could you exemplify how to alias `W` to `w`.

I am aware of the process to *map keys* to certain *commands*, but that is not what I’m looking for.

I get

I know I can add aliases like this in my .gitconfig

directly into the creation of a git alias:

This leads on from my [previous question/answer][1] on SO, where I put the code into a .sh file and then aliased to the file:

But in the never-ending quest for simplicity, there&#39;s gotta be a way to skip the file and insert code directly into the alias? I can&#39;t figure out the format...

JavaScript function aliasing doesn&#39;t seem to work

I&#39;m trying to set up a Windows PowerShell alias to run MinGW&#39;s g++ executable with certain parameters. However, these parameters need to come after the file name and other arguments. I don&#39;t want to go through the hassle of trying to set up a function and all of that. Is there a way to simply say something like:

How can I find out where an alias is defined on my system?  I am referring to the kind of alias that is used within a Terminal session launched from Mac OS X (10.6.3).

For example, if I enter the `alias` command with no parameters at a Terminal command prompt, I get a list of aliases that I have set, for example:

    alias mysql=&#39;/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql&#39;

However, I have searched all over my system using Spotlight and `mdfind` in various startup files and so far can not find where this alias has been defined. ( I did it a long time ago and didn&#39;t write down where I assigned the alias).

I am trying to use aliases in a non-interactive bash shell. I have defined my aliases in `~/.bashrc` and I have set the variable `BASH_ENV=~/startUpFile`. The contents of the startUpFile are `source ~/.bashrc`.

I can see that my aliases are recognized, when I execute the `alias` command. However, if I try to use an alias defined in `~/.bashrc`, Bash can&#39;t recognized it. It gives me the unknown command error.

With the TCSH shell it is pretty easy to do this because the `~/.cshrc` file is always read.

Any ideas how I can do this with a Bash shell?
