Background: I&#39;m implementing some searches that have to finish in small amount of time. When the garbage collector starts collecting the oldest generation, it is &quot;much&quot; slower than in other cases. It took more time than it is intended for searches. I&#39;m looking how to predict when it will collect oldest generation and how long it will take.

It is easy to predict when it will collect oldest generation with `get_count()` and `get_threshold()`. That also can be manipulated with `set_threshold()`. But I don&#39;t see how easy to decide is it better to make `collect()` by force or wait for scheduled collection.

I have an issue with some content that we are downloading from the web for a screen scraping tool that I am building.

in the code below, the string returned from the web client download string method returns some odd characters for the source download for a few (not all) web sites.

I have recently added http headers as below. Previously the same code was called without the headers to the same effect. I have not tried variations on the &#39;Accept-Charset&#39; header, I don&#39;t know much about text encoding other than the basics.

The characters, or character sequences that I refer to are:

Does the connection get closed? Because technically we never get to the last `}` as we `return` before it.

Now, say somewhere in the `try` we get an error and it gets caught. Does the connection still get closed? Because again, we skip the rest of the code in the `try` and go directly to the `catch` statement.


Am I thinking too linearly in how `using` works? ie Does `Dispose()` simply get called when we leave the `using` scope?

I have the following date in string format &quot;2011-29-01 12:00 am&quot; . Now I am trying to convert that to datetime format with the following code:

    DateTime.TryParse(dateTime, out dt); 

But I am alwayws getting dt as {1/1/0001 12:00:00 AM}  , Can you please tell me why ?  and how can I convert that string to date.

EDIT: I just saw everybody mentioned to use format argument. I will mention now that I can&#39;t use the format parameter  as I have some setting to select the custom dateformat what user wants, and based on that user is able to get the date in textbox in that format automatically via jQuery datepicker.

I have a form with 2 comboboxes on it. And I want to fill `combobox2.DataSource` based on `combobox1.Text` and `combobox2.Text` (I assume that the user has completed input in `combobox1` and is in the middle of inputting in `combobox2`). So I have an event handler for `combobox2` like this:

As far as building DataSource is time-consuming process (it creates a request to database and executes it) I decided that it&#39;s better to perform it in another process using BackgroundWorker. So there&#39;s a scenario when cmbDataSourceExtractor hasn&#39;t completed its work and the user types one more symbol. In this case I get an exception on this line  
`cmbDataSourceExtractor.RunWorkerAsync(filledComboboxValues );` about that BackgroundWorker is busy and cannot perform several actions in the same time.  
How to get rid of this exception?

How to stop BackgroundWorker correctly

I have a form that goes through an endless loop and processes data. When I click a button that &quot;closes&quot; the form, the form keeps processing even though it is closed. I want the form to completely end and exit out of its loop statement, and then open a new form.

Here is the code I am using to close the form

    frmMain.Close()
    frmMain.Dispose()

Note: I am not using threads it&#39;s just a simple [VB.NET][1] application. I am not closing the main startup form.

I am trying to implement the MVP method for the first time, using WinForms.

I am trying to understand the function of each layer.

In my program I have a GUI button that when clicked upon opens a openfiledialog window.

So using MVP, the GUI handles the button click event and then calls presenter.openfile();

Within presenter.openfile(), should that then delegate the opening of that file to the model layer, or as there is no data or logic to process, should it simply act on the request and open the openfiledialog window?  

**Update:**  I have decided to offer a bounty as I feel I need further assistance on this, and preferably tailored to my specific points below, so that I have context.

Okay, after reading up on MVP, I have decided to implement the Passive View.  Effectively I will have a bunch of controls on a Winform that will be handled by a Presenter and then the tasks delegated to the Model(s).  My specific points are below:

1.  When the winform loads, it has to obtain a treeview.  Am I correct in thinking that the view should therefore call a method such as: presenter.gettree(), this in turn will delegate to the model, which will obtain the data for the treeview, create it and configure it, return it to the presenter, which in turn will pass to the view which will then simply assign it to, say, a panel?

2.  Would this be the same for any data control on the Winform, as I also have a datagridview?

3.  My App, has a number of model classes with the same assembly.  It also supports a plugin architecture with plugins that need to be loaded at startup.  Would the view simply call a presenter method, which in turn would call a method that loads the plugins and display the information in the view?  Which tier would then control the plugin references.  Would the view hold references to them or the presenter?

4.  Am I correct in thinking that the view should handle every single thing about presentation, from treeview node colour, to datagrid size, etc?

I think that they are my main concerns and if I understand how the flow should be for these I think I will be okay.

In the Tutomentor.Data project, the App.config was created when I added an entity .edmx model file.

Is this possible? Any recommendations?

When deploying, will the output COMBINE these App.config files into a single one?

I have a simple script which parses a file and loads it&#39;s contents to a database. I don&#39;t need a UI, but right now I&#39;m prompting the user for the file to parse using `raw_input` which is most unfriendly, especially because the user can&#39;t copy/paste the path.  I would like a quick and easy way to present a file selection dialog to the user, they can select the file, and then it&#39;s loaded to the database.  (In my use case, if they happened to chose the wrong file, it would fail parsing, and wouldn&#39;t be a problem even if it was loaded to the database.)

This code is close to what I want, but it leaves an annoying empty frame open (which isn&#39;t able to be closed, probably because I haven&#39;t registered a close event handler).

I have a `TextBox` named `textbox1` and a `Button` named `button1`.
When I click on `button1` I want to browse my files to search only for image files (type jpg, png, bmp...).
And when I select an image file and click Ok in the file dialog I want the file directory to be written in the `textbox1.text` like this:

However, there&#39;s a problem: it uses the `GetOpenFileName` function and `OPENFILENAME` structure. `OPENFILENAME` has the member named `templateID`, which is the identifier for dialog template. And the project contains the `res1.rc` file and the templated dialog init, too. But I couldn&#39;t figure out how to attach this file to my C# project.
