Label and Text have different CSS properties.  [Label inherits from Labeled, Control, and Region](http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/javafx/api/javafx/scene/doc-files/cssref.html#label), which means it inherits a great many styleable properties which Text doesn&#39;t have.  A Label can have alignment, a graphic, a background, a border, a displayed keyboard mnemonic, built-in wrapping, and can be intelligently clipped with an [ellipsis](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis) (&quot;…&quot;).

Text can participate in a [TextFlow](http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/javafx/api/javafx/scene/text/TextFlow.html).  (Technically, Label can also, but it is treated as just another embedded control and is not laid out as text.)

In general, if you want to show the purpose of an input control by placing one or more words next to it, and/or you want to allow direct keyboard navigation to an input control, you use a Label.  If you want to display text content not associated with input, you use Text.


A `Text` is a geometric shape (like a Rectangle or a Circle), while
`Label` is a UI control (like a Button or a CheckBox). 

In Swing, geometric shapes were restricted to the painting mechanism,
while in JavaFX they can be used in more generic ways.

I have a problem in trying to do a POST request in my application and I searched a lot, but I did not find the solution.

I have a while loop, and I want it to keep running through for 15 minutes. it is currently:

(this runs through, and then restarts. I need it to continue doing this except after 15 minutes it exits the loop)

I have just discovered the new Java 8 stream capabilities. Coming from Python, I was wondering if there was now a neat way to do operations on arrays like summing, multiplying two arrays in a &quot;one line pythonic&quot; way ?

As far as I can tell, the way to sum a `List&lt;Double&gt;` using Java 8 streams is this:

    List&lt;Double&gt; vals = . . . ;
    double sum = vals.stream().mapToDouble(Double::doubleValue).sum();

To me, the `mapToDouble(Double::doubleValue)` seems kind of crufty - just the sort of boilerplate &quot;ceremony&quot; that lambdas and streams were supposed to dispense with.

Best practices tell us to prefer `List` instances over arrays, and yet for this sort of summing, arrays seem cleaner:

    double[] vals = . . . ;
    double sum = Arrays.stream(vals).sum();

Granted, one could do this:

    List&lt;Double&gt; vals = . . . ;
    double sum = vals.stream().reduce(0.0, (i,j) -&gt; i+j);

But that `reduce(....)` is so much longer than `sum()`.

I get that this has to do with the way streams need to be retrofitted around the Java&#39;s non-object primitives, but still, am I missing something here?  Is there some way to squeeze autoboxing in to make this shorter?  Or is this just the current state of the art?

@dasblinkenlight explains that some kind of unboxing will always be necessary, due to decisions made further back in the history of Java, specifically in the way generics were implemented and their relationship to the non-object primitives. He notes that it is theoretically possible for the compiler to intuit the unboxing and allow for briefer code, but this has not yet been implemented.

@Holger shows a solution that is very close to the expressiveness I was asking about:

    double sum = vals.stream().reduce(0.0, Double::sum);

I was unaware of the new static `Double.sum()` method.  Added with 1.8, it seems intended for the very purpose I was describing.  I also found `Double.min()` and `Double.max()`.  Going forward, I will definitely use this idiom for such operations on `List&lt;Double&gt;` and similar.

Is mapToDouble() really necessary for summing a List&lt;Double&gt; with Java 8 streams?

I write unit test and want to use `JUnitParamsRunner` and `MockitoJUnitRunner` for one test class.

Unfortunately, the following does not work:

I&#39;ve been looking at the difference between `Collections.sort` and `list.sort`, specifically regarding using the `Comparator` static methods and whether param types are required in the lambda expressions. Before we start, I know I could use method references, e.g. `Song::getTitle` to overcome my problems, but my query here is not so much something I want to fix but something I want an answer to, i.e. why is the Java compiler handling it in this way. 

These are my finding. Suppose we have an `ArrayList` of type `Song`, with some songs added, there are 3 standard get methods:

        ArrayList&lt;Song&gt; playlist1 = new ArrayList&lt;Song&gt;();

        //add some new Song objects
        playlist.addSong( new Song(&quot;Only Girl (In The World)&quot;, 235, &quot;Rhianna&quot;) );
        playlist.addSong( new Song(&quot;Thinking of Me&quot;, 206, &quot;Olly Murs&quot;) );
        playlist.addSong( new Song(&quot;Raise Your Glass&quot;, 202,&quot;P!nk&quot;) );

Here is a call to both types of sort method that works, no problem:

    Collections.sort(playlist1, 
        		Comparator.comparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getTitle()));

    playlist1.sort(
        		Comparator.comparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getTitle()));


As soon as I start to chain `thenComparing`, the following happens:

    Collections.sort(playlist1,
        		Comparator.comparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getTitle())
        		.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getDuration())
        		.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getArtist())
    			);
    	
    playlist1.sort(
    		Comparator.comparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getTitle())
        	.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getDuration())
        	.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getArtist())
    		);

i.e. syntax errors because it does not know the type of `p1` anymore. So to fix this I add the type `Song` to the first parameter (of comparing):


    Collections.sort(playlist1,
        		Comparator.comparing((Song p1) -&gt; p1.getTitle())
        		.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getDuration())
        		.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getArtist())
    			);
    	
    playlist1.sort(
    		Comparator.comparing((Song p1) -&gt; p1.getTitle())
        	.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getDuration())
        	.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getArtist())
    		);

Now here comes the CONFUSING part. For p`laylist1.sort`, i.e. the List, this solve all compilation errors, for both the following `thenComparing` calls. However, for `Collections.sort`, it solves it for the first one, but not the last one. I tested added several extra calls to `thenComparing` and it always shows an error for the last one, unless I put `(Song p1)` for the parameter.

Now I went on to test this further with creating a `TreeSet` and with using `Objects.compare`:

    int x = Objects.compare(t1, t2, 
    				Comparator.comparing((Song p1) -&gt; p1.getTitle())
    				.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getDuration())
    				.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getArtist())
    				);
    	
    	
		Set&lt;Song&gt; set = new TreeSet&lt;Song&gt;(
    			Comparator.comparing((Song p1) -&gt; p1.getTitle())
				.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getDuration())
				.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getArtist())
				);

The same thing happens as in, for the `TreeSet`, there are no compilation errors but for `Objects.compare` the last call to `thenComparing` shows an error.

Can anyone please explain why this is happening and also why there is no need to use `(Song p1)` at all when simply calling the comparing method (without further `thenComparing` calls).


One other query on the same topic is when I do this to the `TreeSet`:

    Set&lt;Song&gt; set = new TreeSet&lt;Song&gt;(
    			Comparator.comparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getTitle())
				.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getDuration())
				.thenComparing(p1 -&gt; p1.getArtist())

i.e. remove the type `Song` from the first lambda parameter for the comparing method call, it shows syntax errors under the call to comparing and the first call to `thenComparing` but not to the final call to `thenComparing` - almost the opposite of what was happening above! Whereas, for all the other 3 examples i.e. with `Objects.compare`, `List.sort` and `Collections.sort` when I remove that first `Song` param type it shows syntax errors for all the calls.

Edited to include screenshot of errors I was receiving in Eclipse Kepler SR2, which I have now since found are Eclipse specific because when compiled using the JDK8 java compiler on the command-line it compiles OK.

Very confused by Java 8 Comparator type inference

I would like to remove or change the default text shown by an empty javafx table from `No content in table` to something more meaningful for the user. 

For example in a table showing students, when there are no students to show I want it to say &quot;No students in database&quot; or &quot;Student has no courses&quot; for a courses table. I don&#39;t know if this is possible in javafx, either through java code, using scene builder, or by editing the .fxml file in an IDE. So far I have looked at the properties of the tableview in scene builder and I can&#39;t see a related property for this text

I recently downloaded JDK 1.8.0.0_06 that comes bundled with NetBeans. I then got to find out that my JavaFx project, that I have been developing in Java 1.7 won&#39;t compile in Java 1.8, and so I stepped down my JDK to 1.7. Still I can&#39;t get it to work/ compile. I get this error:

	javac: invalid target release: 1.8
	Usage: javac &lt;options&gt; &lt;source files&gt;

I&#39;m really stuck and would greatly appreciate any help.

I want to save a file before closing my JavaFX application.

This is how I&#39;m setting up the handler in `Main::start`:

    primaryStage.setOnCloseRequest(event -&gt; {

And the controller calling `Stage::close` when a button is pressed:

If I close the window clicking the red X on the window border (the normal way) then I get the output message &quot;`Stage is closing`&quot;, which is the desired behavior.

However, when calling `Controller::exitApplication` the application closes without invoking the handler (there&#39;s no output).

How can I make the controller use the handler I&#39;ve added to `primaryStage`?


    


JavaFX: Stage close handler

I tried to create a **JavaFX** application in IntelliJ Idea IDE but I got compile error that said:

&gt; java: package javafx.application does not exist. 

I have changed the Project SDK and the Project Language Level to Java 8, reloaded the project but it didn&#39;t help. Then I checked if JavaFX plugin was enabled in the settings.

The search on Google and StackOverflow didn&#39;t give me more ideas of what is wrong.

I need to resize an image to specific dimensions, 100 by 100 pixels for example, in JavaFX. 

How can I achieve that? Could the Image or the ImageView class be used for this purpose?

In JavaFX, if I have a scene with 2 `VBox` elements and each `VBox` has multiple `Label` in it.  
If I set the top `VBox` to **invisible**, why does the bottom `VBox` **not move up** the scene where the top `VBox` was ?  

The `VBox` is **invisible** but I would expect the other objects to move into its place.

JavaFX - setVisible hides the element but doesn&#39;t rearrange adjacent nodes

I am trying to find the elusive JavaFX scene builder so I can use it in Intellij. I am on Windows OS.

Oracle have stated that the JavaFX scene builder is included in a new download, but no matter how I search I cannot find it (see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javafx/downloads/index.html). I think they have linked to the incorrect page and Googling for it is getting me nowhere.

I already have Java 8 SDK installed and working fine. Apparently JavaFX is now included in that, but nowhere in the Java folder can I find the scene builder and it seems to be completely missing online.

Please can anyone help? I am just wanting to write a small GUI program and it seems like JavaFX is the way to go (if it isn&#39;t then feel free to disabuse me of this notion!)
