While SQLCMD.exe is the best way, SSMS also has a SQLCMD mode where you can execute a SQLCMD script. To enable this mode click **Query** in menu bar then select **SQLCMD Mode**.

The &quot;:r filename.sql&quot; command is the SQLCMD script command to import and execute a sql script file.  You know you are in SQLCMD mode because any lines that are SQLCMD script commands will appear with colored (gray I think) background.

Do you know how to look for special characters with google...? 

I&#39;m looking at bash code and there&#39;s the ## operator. I would like to know what It does but I wasn&#39;t able to figure out a way to protect the character (I&#39;m not sure it&#39;s even possible).

This is particularly annoying when you&#39;re looking for some code patterns, some characters are always ignored.

This is weird.  I added a brand new Web Application project to my solution in Visual Studio 2008.   

Created a master page. Made zero modifications.
Created a new webform. Set its master page to the MP I just created. 

Still, no modifications. No markup. No user controls. No references. Nothing.  However when I try to run it, I get:

Has anybody got recent experience with deploying a Django application with an SQL Server database back end? Our workplace is heavily invested in SQL Server and will not support Django if there isn&#39;t a sufficiently developed back end for it.

I&#39;m aware of mssql.django-pyodbc and django-mssql as unofficially supported back ends. Both projects seem to have only one person contributing which is a bit of a worry though the contributions seem to be somewhat regular.

Are there any other back ends for SQL Server that are well supported? Are the two I mentioned here &#39;good enough&#39; for production? What are your experiences?

Using Sql Server with Django in production

I&#39;ve got a SQL Server table with about 50,000 rows in it. I want to select about 5,000 of those rows at random. I&#39;ve thought of a complicated way, creating a temp table with a &quot;random number&quot; column, copying my table into that, looping through the temp table and updating each row with `RAND()`, and then selecting from that table where the random number column &lt; 0.1. I&#39;m looking for a simpler way to do it, in a single statement if possible.

[This article][1] suggest using the `NEWID()` function. That looks promising, but I can&#39;t see how I could reliably select a certain percentage of rows.

Anybody ever do this before? Any ideas?

Consider the following MS-SQL table, called GroupTable:

How do you insert a new row into the table (and hence generate a new ID) **without** using IDENTITY_INSERT ON?

Note that this:

... won&#39;t work.

How to insert into a table with just one IDENTITY column?

I have a problem when I try to add constraints to my tables. I get the error:

My constraint is between a `Code` table and an `employee` table. The `Code` table contains `Id`, `Name`, `FriendlyName`, `Type` and a `Value`. The `employee` has a number of fields that reference codes, so that there can be a reference for each type of code.

I need for the fields to be set to null if the code that is referenced is deleted.

Any ideas how I can do this?

I&#39;ve got some batch files that I use to help automate the process of creating and reloading development databases.  It makes sense to create and maintain these batch files in Visual Studio (i.e., in a VS Database project).  They look pretty simple, like this:

In other words, Visual Studio is somehow invisibly inserting a set of characters that the Windows command processor is interpreting as a command, i.e., &quot;∩╗┐&quot;.  A Google search returned nothing on this.  Has anybody else run into this?  Thoughts on a fix?

I&#39;ve got a workaround (just add a blank line to the beginning of each file, and it&#39;ll show the error, but otherwise work fine), but the anal-retentive side of myself gets annoyed each time I run one of these files.

Visual Studio inserts invalid characters in batch files

I need to do a .bat for DOS that do the following:

Argh! I created an SSIS package via an Import Wizard and I can&#39;t find the SSIS packages on the server using Management Studio. Execute an SSIS package doesn&#39;t appear as an option when I go into job scheduler, either.

We are writing a new application, and while testing, we will need a bunch of dummy data. I&#39;ve added that data by using MS Access to dump excel files into the relevant tables.

Every so often, we want to &quot;refresh&quot; the relevant tables, which means dropping them all, re-creating them, and running a saved MS Access append query.

The first part (dropping &amp; re-creating) is an easy sql script, but the last part makes me cringe. I want a single setup script that has a bunch of INSERTs to regenerate the dummy data.

I have the data in the tables now. What is the best way to automatically generate a big list of INSERT statements from that dataset?

The only way I can think of doing it is to save the table to an excel sheet and then write an excel formula to create an INSERT for every row, which is surely not the best way.
