Actually Windows does have a utility that encodes and decodes base64 - CERTUTIL

I&#39;m not sure what version of Windows introduced this command. 

To encode a file:

    certutil -encode inputFileName encodedOutputFileName

To decode a file:

    certutil -decode encodedInputFileName decodedOutputFileName

There are a number of available verbs and options available to CERTUTIL.

To get a list of nearly all available verbs:

    certutil -?

To get help on a particular verb (-encode for example):

    certutil -encode -?

To get complete help for nearly all verbs:

    certutil -v -?

Mysteriously, the `-encodehex` verb is not listed with `certutil -?` or `certutil -v -?`. But it is described using `certutil -encodehex -?`. It is another handy function :-)

Regarding David Morales&#39; comment, there is a [poorly documented type option](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/api/wincrypt/nf-wincrypt-cryptbinarytostringa) to the `-encodehex` verb that allows creation of base64 strings without header or footer lines.

    certutil [Options] -encodehex inFile outFile [type]

A type of 1 will yield base64 without the header or footer lines.

Not investigated, but the `-decodehex` verb also has an optional trailing type argument.

I have a select div that I&#39;m using the [chosen jquery plugin](http://harvesthq.github.io/chosen/) to style and add features to (most notably, search).  The div looks something like this,

And I&#39;m using the chosen plugin like this,

While some AJAX is loading, I&#39;d like to disable the entire `&lt;select&gt;` div.  Maybe with something like this,

     $(&#39;#foobar&#39;).disable()

or this

     $(&#39;#foobar&#39;).prop(&#39;disabled&#39;, true)

I think you get the idea.

Any ideas on how to do this?  I&#39;ve tried a number of different things, like using jquery idioms for disabling things, disabling the `&lt;select&gt;` which just disables the underlying select, not the chosen stuff on top of it.  I&#39;ve even resorted to manually adding another div with a high `z-index` to just grey out the box, but I think that this is likely to be ugly and buggy.

Since `printf` is not reentrant, it&#39;s not supposed to be safe to use it in a signal handler. But I&#39;ve seen lots of example codes that uses `printf` this way.

So my question is: when do we need to avoid using `printf` in a signal handler, and is there a recommended replacement?

I have a problem with our executable. I&#39;m running this C++ 32-bit executable on my Windows&amp;nbsp;7 64-bit development box that also has all those Microsoft applications (Visual Studio 2008 + 2010, TFS, SDK, Microsoft Office)...
And it&#39;s still running just fine.

Now I got the client installation of the very same program and was asked to test it with a clean Windows&amp;nbsp;7 installation. Thus I got one Windows&amp;nbsp;7 64-bit VMware and updated it to Windows&amp;nbsp;7 SP 1 (the very same version my developer box is tuning).
But while on my developer box everything is fine the program does not work with the VMware (30 days trial) box.

The x86 [Dependency Walker][1] is telling me that the following DLL files are missing:

   * API-MS-WIN-CORE-COM-L1-1-0.DLL
   * API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-ERROR-L1-1-0.DLL
   * API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-L1-1-0.DLL
   * API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-ROBUFFER-L1-1-0.DLL
   * API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-STRING-L1-1-0.DLL
   * API-MS-WIN-SHCORE-SCALING-L1-1-0.DLL
   * DCOMP.DLL
   * GPSVC.DLL
   * IESHIMS.DLL

I googled for those API-MS-WIN-... DLL files and found they should actually already be part of Windows&amp;nbsp;7 (some sites claiming the belong to Windows&amp;nbsp;8 and Windows Server 2012 though).

I already tried the suggested fixes I found, which are:

* running &#39;sfc /scannow&#39;
* installing Visual Studio 2008 SP1 runtime executables

But that didn&#39;t solve anything. :-(

Side note: My development box does not have them either, and does not seem to need them. For example, the user32.dll on my box does not link against one of those, while the installation on the VMware does.

Any idea on how to fix this issue?
I tried to find a suitable download / fix on the Microsoft pages, but I failed.

After solving my issue I wanted to report what I found out, and I can&#39;t post this as an answer because the question has been closed.

Actually all the DLL files reported missing by the Dependency Walker tool, namely those

    * API-MS-WIN-CORE-...

type DLL files were not part of the actual problem.

In my case the registration of three OCX files was missing and after that everything was just fine, BUT Dependency Walker tool still listed all the very same DLL files as before even when the program was just running fine now.

The gist of it: As someone elsewhere stated, the tool is a bit dated by now and does not always work properly with a newer OS. Thus keep an eye open and don&#39;t get mislead by missing &#39;API-MS-WIN-CORE-COM-L1-1-0.DLL&#39;, ... the problem probably lies entirely elsewhere.

I&#39;m installing mingw-w64 on Windows and there are two options: win32 threads and posix threads. I know what is the difference between win32 threads and pthreads but I don&#39;t understand what is the difference between these two options. I doubt that if I will choose posix threads it will prevent me from calling WinAPI functions like CreateThread.

It seems that this option specify which threading API will be used by some program or library, but by what? By GCC, libstdc++ or by something else?

I&#39;ve got what I&#39;m hoping is a simple question, but I haven&#39;t been able to find the answer yet.  I would like to launch Git Bash from a Windows batch file.  Here is what I tried so far:

1. Launched Git Bash from Win 7 Start button
2. Used CTRL+ALT+DEL to identify the process as &quot;sh.exe&quot;
3. Launched sh.exe from batch file using start command

        start sh.exe

However, this does not launch the full Git Bash environment.  Git Bash usually has &quot;MINGW32&quot; in the title bar, but sh.exe has a full path to ... `Git\bin\sh.exe`.  It feels to me like there are some overlays or dependencies that I&#39;m not aware of possibly, that also need to be loaded (pulled in? imported?).

I want to set up Python `SimpleHTTPServer` on Windows XP. I have Python installed on my computer. I am executing the following command:

    python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8888

But I am getting the error:

Is `SimpleHTTPServer` for Python available on Windows? If yes, what do I do to set up the server?

How to prevent batch window from closing when error occurs?

Is it possible to write a single script file which executes in both Windows (treated as .bat) and Linux (via Bash)?

I know the basic syntax of both, but didn&#39;t figure out. It could probably exploit some Bash&#39;s obscure syntax or some Windows batch processor glitch.

The command to execute may be just a single line to execute other script.

The motivation is to have just a single application boot command for both Windows and Linux.

**Update:** The need for system&#39;s &quot;native&quot; shell script is that it needs to pick the right interpreter version, conform to certain well-known environment variables etc. Installing additional environments like CygWin is not preferable - I&#39;d like to keep the concept &quot;download &amp; run&quot;.

The only other language to consider for Windows is Windows Scripting Host - WSH, which is preset by default since 98.
