I am receiving the rather self explanatory error:

The issue is due to `*` in the request URL:

    https://stackoverflow.com/Search/test*/0/1/10/1

This url is used to populate a search page where &#39;test*&#39; is the search term and the rest of the url relates to various other filters.

Is there an easy way to allow these special characters in the URL? I&#39;ve tried modifying the `web.config`, to no avail.

Should I manually encode / decode the special characters?
Or is there a best practice for doing this, I would like to avoid using query strings. - but it may be an option.

The application itself is a `c# asp.net` webforms application that uses routing to produce the nice URL above.

The only way at the time I could find to ensure that every request to a page was over https was to check it in the page load event. In my .Net 2.0 Asp.net WebForms app, I have my Global.asax containing the following code:

This turned out to be a very hard nut to crack... any help will be appreciated!

I have a web app where the user needs to upload a .zip file.  On the server-side, I am checking the mime type of the uploaded file, to make sure it is `application/x-zip-compressed` or `application/zip`.

This worked fine for me on Firefox and IE.  However, when a coworker tested it, it failed for him on Firefox (sent mime type was something like &quot;`application/octet-stream`&quot;) but worked on Internet Explorer.  Our setups seem to be identical: IE8, FF 3.5.1 with all add-ons disabled, Win XP SP3, WinRAR installed as native .zip file handler (not sure if that&#39;s relevant).

So my question is: **How does the browser determine what mime type to send?**

**The Problem**

In the stack that we re-use between projects, we are putting a little bit too much data in the session for passing data between pages. This was good in theory because it prevents tampering, replay attacks, and so on, but it creates as many problems as it solves.

Session loss itself is an issue, although it&#39;s *mostly* handled by implementing Session State Server (or by using SQL Server). More importantly, it&#39;s tricky to make the back button work correctly, and it&#39;s also extra work to create a situation where a user can, say, open the same screen in three tabs to work on different records.

And that&#39;s just the tip of the iceberg.

There are workarounds for most of these issues, but as I grind away, all this friction gives me the feeling that passing data between pages using session is the wrong direction.

What I really want to do here is come up with a best practice that my shop can use all the time for passing data between pages, and then, for new apps, replace key parts of our stack that currently rely on Session.

It would also be nice if the final solution did not result in mountains of boilerplate plumbing code. 


**Proposed Solutions**

*Session*

As mentioned above, leaning heavily on Session *seems* like a good idea, but it breaks the back button and causes some other problems. 

There may be ways to get around all the problems, but it seems like a lot of extra work. 

One thing that&#39;s very nice about using session is the fact that tampering is just not an issue. Compared to passing everything via the unencrypted QueryString, you end up writing much less guard code. 

*Cross-Page Posting*

In truth I&#39;ve barely considered this option. I have a problem with how tightly coupled it makes the pages -- if I start doing PreviousPage.FindControl(&quot;SomeTextBox&quot;), that seems like a maintenance problem if I ever want to get to this page from another page that maybe does not have a control called SomeTextBox.

It seems limited in other ways as well. Maybe I want to get to the page via a link, for instance.

*QueryString*

I&#39;m currently leaning towards this strategy, like in the olden days. But I probably want my QueryString to be encrypted to make it harder to tamper with, and I would like to handle the problem of replay attacks as well.

However, it should be possible to create an HttpModule that takes care of all this and removes all the encryption sausage-making from the page. **Update:** Just in case I&#39;m not being clear enough, by &#39;passing data between pages&#39; I&#39;m talking about, for instance, passing a CustomerID key from a CustomerSearch.aspx page to Customers.aspx, where the Customer will be opened and editing can occur.

I noticed that FF applies this border/outline in required fields and removes it when value is set. The problem is that I am using the value attribute to emulate the placeholder attr in older browsers. Therefore I need all inputs with this feature to not show the red line.

Why does ASP.Net RadioButton and CheckBox render inside a Span?

For efficiency purposes I am wondering if a file or text in a textarea still gets transferred to the server if you omit the name attribute or set it to null. eg

Radio buttons on Rails

From a quick search on *Stack Overflow* I saw people suggesting the following way of checking if a cookie exists:

    HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies[&quot;cookie_name&quot;] != null

or (inside a `Page` class):

    this.Response.Cookies[&quot;cookie_name&quot;] != null

However, when I try to use the indexer (or the Cookies.Get method) to retrieve a cookie that does not exist it seems to actually **create** a &#39;default&#39; cookie with that name and return that, thus no matter what cookie name I use it never returns null. (and even worse - creates an unwanted cookie)

Am I doing something wrong here, or is there a different way of simply checking for the existance of a specific cookie by name?

Why is a ScriptManager being used in this way at all?  I was under the impression ScriptManager was required for Microsoft&#39;s version of Ajax such as using UpdatePanels.  What is the purpose of using ScriptManager here... just to simply register javascript files?

What is the difference in registering javascript files through the ScriptManager versus up at the top of Site.Master where it uses the following approach instead?
