I need to be able to identify what tab I am in within the browser.  Isn&#39;t there some bit of information I can get from the browser to identify the tab?  I don&#39;t need to know anything about any other tabs, I just need an id for the tab I am in. It could be a random or sequenced number, or a date-time stamp, as long as it remains the same for the life of the tab.

I have a client side app that makes a BOSH over HTTP connection to a remote server, and if I open it in multiple tabs, each instance needs its own unique id or the app fails, so I just need some unique number that is associated with the tab for as long as that tab exists (i.e. something that survives page refresh as I navigate the site that provides this app).  Seems like a no-brainer that should just be available in the browser, like window.tabId - that&#39;s all I need.  I&#39;ve got a serious development block because I cannot get past this simple, simple, simple solution that doesn&#39;t seem to exist.  There must be a way (a cross-browser solution at that).

I am developing an android application that targets Android 4.0 (API 14) and above.

I am looking for a serial number that is unique per device and that persists for ever (dies with the device, does not change after factory resets).

I have found lots of results on the web concerning unique identifiers for android devices, but very little on the **android.os.Build.SERIAL** number.

So far, I eliminated the use of the **ANDROID_ID** because it might change after factory resets. I also eliminated the use of the **IMEI** because the android device might be non-phone. I cannot use the wifi or bluetooth **MAC ADDRESS** because the device might not have such hardware and/or such mac addresses might not be readable if the hardware is not enabled (based on what I found on the web).

I believe I might go for the android device serial number.

It is easily accessible using **android.os.Build.SERIAL** (since it is added in API level 9 and does not need any additional permission).

My questions are :

* Taking into consideration that my application targets Android 4.0 (API 14) and above, is the **android.os.Build.SERIAL** number for the android devices unique for each device ?

* Currently, documentation of **android.os.Build.SERIAL** indicates : **A hardware serial number, if available. Alphanumeric only, case-insensitive.**
Does this mean that the serial number might not be available ?

* What could be another alternative that meets the conditions mentioned above ?

I want to create a unique id but `uniqid()` is giving something like `&#39;492607b0ee414&#39;`. What i would like is something similar to what tinyurl gives: `&#39;64k8ra&#39;`. The shorter, the better. The only requirements are that it should not have an obvious order and that it should look prettier than a seemingly random sequence of numbers. Letters are preferred over numbers and ideally it would not be mixed case. As the number of entries will not be that many (up to 10000 or so) the risk of collision isn&#39;t a huge factor.

A table I have no control of the schema for, contains a column defined as varchar(50) which stores uniqueidentifiers in the format &#39;a89b1acd95016ae6b9c8aabb07da2010&#39; (no hyphens)

I want to convert these to uniqueidentifiers in SQL for passing to a .Net Guid. However, the following query lines don&#39;t work for me:

    select cast(&#39;a89b1acd95016ae6b9c8aabb07da2010&#39; as uniqueidentifier)
    select convert(uniqueidentifier, &#39;a89b1acd95016ae6b9c8aabb07da2010&#39;)

and result in:
&lt;pre&gt;Msg 8169, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier.&lt;/pre&gt;

The same queries using a hyphenated uniqueidentifier work fine but the data is not stored in that format.

Is there another (efficient) way to convert these strings to uniqueidentifiers in SQL. -- I don&#39;t want to do it in the .Net code.

.NET Short Unique Identifier

I need to write a function that generates an id that is unique for a given machine running a Windows OS.

Currently, I&#39;m using WMI to query various hardware parameters and concatenate them together and hash them to derive the unique id. My question is, what are the suggested parameters I should use? 
Currently, I&#39;m using a combination of bios\cpu\disk data to generate the unique id. And am using the first result if multiple results are there for each metric.

However, I ran into an issue where a machine that dual boots into 2 different Windows OS generates different site codes on each OS, which should ideally not happen.

For reference, these are the metrics I&#39;m currently using:

I am a student at university and our task is to create a search engine. I am having difficulty generating a unique id to assign to each url when added into the frontier. I have attempted using the SHA-256 hashing algorithm as well as Guid. Here is the code that i used to implement the guid:

In C# a guid can be created using Guid.NewGuid().  This creates a 128 bit integer.  SQL Server has a uniqueidentifier column which holds a huge hexidecimal number.  

Is there a good/preferred way to make C# and SQL Server guids play well together? (i.e. create a guid using Guid.New() and then store it in the database using nvarchar or some other field ... or create some hexidecimal number of the form that SQL Server is expecting by some other means)

I am developing an iOS app which calls web-service for login and at that time i send login credentials to web server along with vendor identifier (identifierForVendor),to identify device uniquely for those credentials.So user can have only one device and one credential.

I got identifierForVendor with

This identifier will then store in database of web server and also in device database.Next time when user opens application and will try to download data from web server firstly local identifierForVendor on users device will compare with identifier stored on web server.

Problem occurs when user uninstall app and reinstall it, I found that identifierForVendor is changed. So user cannot proceed further.

I have a directive that can be used multiple times on a page. In the template of this directive, I need to use IDs for an input-Element so I can &quot;bind&quot; a Label to it like so:

If MD5 hashes any arbitrary string into a 32-digit hex value, then according to the [Pigeonhole Principle][1] surely this can not be unique, as there are more unique arbitrary strings than there are unique 32-digit hex values.
