I would like this to be the ultimate discussion on how to check if a table exists in SQL Server 2000/2005 using SQL Statements.

When you Google for the answer, you get so many different answers. Is there an official/backward and forward compatible way of doing it?

Here are two possible ways of doing it. Which one among the two is the standard/best way of doing it?

First way:

    IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 
               FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES 
               WHERE TABLE_TYPE=&#39;BASE TABLE&#39; 
               AND TABLE_NAME=&#39;mytablename&#39;) 
       SELECT 1 AS res ELSE SELECT 0 AS res;

Second way:

**MySQL** provides the simple 

    SHOW TABLES LIKE &#39;%tablename%&#39;; 

statement. I am looking for something similar.



Check if table exists in SQL Server

I made a view to abstract columns of different tables and pre-filter and pre-sort them. There is one column whose content I don&#39;t care about but I need to know whether the content is null or not. So my view should pass an alias as &quot;*true*&quot; in case the value of this specified column **isn&#39;t null** and &quot;*false*&quot; in case the value **is null**.

How can I select such a boolean with T-SQL?

My first naive attempt was to only join to the &quot;**TOP 1**&quot; line items:

Add a column with a default value to an existing table in SQL Server

I realize that parameterized SQL queries is the optimal way to sanitize user input when building queries that contain user input, but I&#39;m wondering what is wrong with taking user input and escaping any single quotes and surrounding the whole string with single quotes. Here&#39;s the code:

    sSanitizedInput = &quot;&#39;&quot; &amp; Replace(sInput, &quot;&#39;&quot;, &quot;&#39;&#39;&quot;) &amp; &quot;&#39;&quot;

Any single-quote the user enters is replaced with double single-quotes, which eliminates the users ability to end the string, so anything else they may type, such as semicolons, percent signs, etc., will all be part of the string and not actually executed as part of the command.  

We are using Microsoft SQL Server 2000, for which I believe the single-quote is the only string delimiter and the only way to escape the string delimiter, so there is no way to execute anything the user types in.

I don&#39;t see any way to launch an SQL injection attack against this, but I realize that if this were as bulletproof as it seems to me someone else would have thought of it already and it would be common practice.  

What&#39;s wrong with this code? Is there a way to get an SQL injection attack past this sanitization technique?  Sample user input that exploits this technique would be very helpful.

UPDATE:

I still don&#39;t know of any way to effectively launch a SQL injection attack against this code. A few people suggested that a backslash would escape one single-quote and leave the other to end the string so that the rest of the string would be executed as part of the SQL command, and I realize that this method would work to inject SQL into a MySQL database, but in SQL&amp;nbsp;Server 2000 the only way (that I&#39;ve been able to find) to escape a single-quote is with another single-quote; backslashes won&#39;t do it.

And unless there is a way to stop the escaping of the single-quote, none of the rest of the user input will be executed because it will all be taken as one contiguous string.

I understand that there are better ways to sanitize input, but I&#39;m really more interested in learning why the method I provided above won&#39;t work. If anyone knows of any specific way to mount a SQL injection attack against this sanitization method I would love to see it.



Can I protect against SQL injection by escaping single-quote and surrounding user input with single-quotes?

Is there a straightforward way of finding the index of the last occurrence of a string using SQL?  I am using SQL Server 2000 right now.  I basically need the functionality that the .NET `System.String.LastIndexOf` method provides.  A little googling revealed this - [Function To Retrieve Last Index][1] - but that does not work if you pass in a &quot;text&quot; column expression.  Other solutions found elsewhere work only so long as the text you are searching for is 1 character long.

I will probably have to cook a function up.  If I do so, I will post it here so you folks can look at it and maybe make use of.

    GRANT EXECUTE ON [storedProcName] TO [userName] 

If it was just a few procedures, however, I have about 100 so what&#39;s the easiest way for me to grant execute access for a specific user to all of them?

I have specified the primary key, foreign key and check constraints on their own because in this way I can define a name for them, otherwise declaring them inline would make SQL Server generate a random name, and I do not &quot;like&quot; it.

The problem arose when I tried to declare the default value constraint: looking at the informations on the internet and how Microsoft SLQ Server Management Studio creates it, I understood that it can be created both inline and on its own:

Having an IN clause with so many options, is it bad for query performance? I&#39;m experiencing many timeouts in my application, and I believe it could be a source of this kind of problem. Can I optimize the query without removing the numbers, using any good SQL Hint?

@KM these are keys in a different table. This is a forum application, explaining briefly: c# gets all forums from database and stores it in app cache. Before C# calls a procedure that gets the threads for these forums and for this user, c# does some logic filtering the &quot;all forums&quot; collection, considering permissions and some business logic. The timeout happens on database and not on application itself. Doing all this logic on the query will require a lot of inner joins and I&#39;m not 100% sure I can do all this inside the procedure.

How can I exit in the middle of a stored procedure?

I have a stored procedure where I  want to bail out early (while trying to debug it). I&#39;ve tried calling `RETURN` and `RAISERROR`, and the sp keeps on running:

I know it keeps running because I encounter an error further down. I don&#39;t see any of my **prints**. If I comment out the bulk of the stored procedure:

I have a stored procedure which executes a select statement. I would like my results ordered by a date field and display all records with NULL dates first and then the most recent dates.

The statement looks like this:

    SELECT a,b,c,[Submission Date]
    FROM someView
    ORDER BY [Submission Date] ASC

Now this will display all records with NULL Submission Dates first, but when I get to rows that have date values in them, they are not the most recent dates in the view.

If I replace ASC with DESC, then I get the dates in the the order I want, but the NULL values are at the bottom of my result set.

Is there any way to structure my query so that I can display the null values at the top and then when there are date values, to order them descending most recent to oldest?

Here is the comparison between the two files using Beyond Compare. The left side contains the file generated by `SQL Server 2000` and the right side contains the file generated by `SQL Server 2012`. You can notice that the left side file from `SQL Server 2000` contains additional double-quotes to compensate the embedded quotes in the data column. This conforms to the standard specified in `RFC 4180` but it is clearly missing from the file generated by `SQL Server 2012`

I know a workaround to fix the issue by writing a query that would replace all double-quotes (**`&quot;`**) in my column data with two double-quotes (**`&quot;&quot;`**) so that the exported file will end up with correct embedded qualifier data. This would avoid pulling the data directly from the table as it is.

###My questions:

 - I don&#39;t know if this issue has been truly fixed in `SQL Server 2012`. Has this issue been fixed only for *`importing`* files that have embedded text qualifiers and **`not`** for *`exporting`* data to CSV?

 - Probably, I am clearly doing something wrong and missing the obvious. Could someone please explain to me what I am doing wrong here?
