I use Shiny GUI R package. I&#39;m looking for a way to display a message like &quot;loading...&quot; after the actionButton was pressed. The function takes several minutes to execute, so I need to inform the user somehow that the button actually triggered some event. Now the server.R code looks like this:

`actionButton()` is a function that downloads data from internet. `input$DownloadButton` is actionButton. So after the button was pressed the user waits for several minutes and only then sees a message saying that download was successful. I would like to show a message &quot;Loading...&quot; just after the actionButton was pressed and then another message like `paste0(Sys.time(),&quot;: &quot;,NROW(DATA()), &quot; items downloaded&quot;)` when execution ends.

In my `shiny` app I am using `datatable` function from `DT` library to construct a table and want to align columns on center. I can use `formatStyle(&#39;column&#39;, textAlign = &#39;center&#39;)` but it affects only column body and not the header.

How do I suppress row names when using `DT::renderDataTable` in R shiny? The following doesn&#39;t work because if you look at the [dataTables options reference][3] there is no rownames option

How do I suppress row names when using DT::renderDataTable in R shiny?

I have developed a RShiny application which I would like to share internally with my colleagues (Hosting the app on a server, is not an option at this stage).

I was exploring various options, and I came across a technique for bundling your app as a standalone desktop application, with an installer file, which you can then share &amp; distribute. (The approach is explained [here](http://www.r-bloggers.com/deploying-desktop-apps-with-r/) &amp; [here](http://blog.analytixware.com/2014/03/packaging-your-shiny-app-as-windows.html))
This is quite neat, because the users installing it need not have R (and any other required packages) to install and run the app (it has portable versions of R, chrome etc)


I was able to follow the approach and create a standalone desktop application, with an installer file, which I can now start sharing.

However, this is my concern:
Ideally, I would not want my users to be able to access the source code. Is there a way to restrict such access? In the tutorial (the first link that I posted), this is what the author says:

Deploying R shiny app as a standalone application

I am trying to set the width of columns in a DataTable rendered in Shiny and am not able to implement it using the aoColumnDefs options. Has anyone tried this before ? My table has 1 text followed by 3 numeric columns. The numeric columns need to be narrower and the 1st column (text) wider.

R Shiny set DataTable column width

I&#39;ve recently learned that R Shiny programs impose a maximum size restriction for file uploads by default (I don&#39;t know what the size is exactly, but I&#39;m guessing it&#39;s 5,000 KB). I&#39;d like to remove this restriction. How can I do so, and what is there a general rule of thumb for the size of user uploads?

In addition, this is on another note, but related: how can I save fie inputs by the user BY session? For example, there would be a file prompt in the application, in which the user can upload a file. Then, when the user chooses the file to display, he can pick among the files he has uploaded. If he exits the session, the list clears.

If you&#39;re answering this question, you are probably familiar with this, but to get this working, save the above into separate scripts (`ui.R` and `server.R` into a folder (`foo`) within the working directory. To run the shiny app, run `runApp(&quot;foo&quot;)`.

Using `ggsave`, I get an error message indicating that `ggsave` can&#39;t use the `filename` function (I think). If I use the standard graphics device (like below), the `Download Plot` works without an error, but it doesn&#39;t write the graphic.

Any tips to get downloadHandler working for writing plots would be appreciated.

How to save plots that are made in a shiny app

I want two different events to trigger an update of the data being used by various plots / outputs in my app. One is a button being clicked (`input$spec_button`) and the other is a point on a dot being clicked (`mainplot.click$click`). 

Basically, I want to listed for both at the same time, but I&#39;m not sure how to write the code. Here&#39;s what I have now:

in server.R:

But the if-else clause doesn&#39;t work

How to listen for more than one event expression within a Shiny eventReactive handler

In a shiny app (by RStudio), on the _server_ side, I have a reactive that returns a list of variables by parsing the content of a `textInput`. The list of variables is then used in `selectInput` and/or `updateSelectInput`.

I can&#39;t make it work. Any suggestions?

I have made two attempts. The first approach is to use the reactive `outVar` directly into `selectInput`. The second approach is to use the reactive `outVar` in `updateSelectInput`. Neither works.

@Ramnath has kindly posted a solution that appears to work, denoted _Edit 2_ by him. But that solution does not address the problem because the `textinput` is on the `ui` side instead of on the `server` side as it is in my problem. If I move the `textinput` of Ramnath&#39;s second edit to the `server` side, the problem crops up again, namely: nothing shows and RStudio crashes. I found that wrapping `input$text` in `as.character` makes the problem disappear.

__Edit 2__

In further discussion, Ramnath has shown me that the problem arises when the server attempts to apply the dynamic function `outVar` before its arguments have been returned by `textinput`. The solution is to first check whether `is.null(input$inBody)` exists.

_**Checking for existence of arguments is a crucial aspect of building a shiny app**_, so why did I not think of it? Well, I did, but I must have done something wrong! Considering the amount of time I spent on the problem, it&#39;s a bitter experience. I show after the code how to check for existence.

Below is Ramnath&#39;s code with `textinput` moved to the `server` side. It crashes RStudio so don&#39;t try it at home. (I have used his notation)

The way I usually check for existence is like this:

Both seem to work, but I&#39;ll be doing it Ramnath&#39;s way from now on: maybe an unbalanced bracket in my construct had earlier prevented me to make the check work? Ramnath&#39;s check is more direct.

Lastly, I&#39;d like to note a couple of things about my various attempts to debug. 

In my debugging quest, I discovered that there is an option to &quot;rank&quot; the priority of &quot;outputs&quot; on the server side, which I explored in an attempt to solve my problem, but didn&#39;t work since the problem was elsewhere. Still, it&#39;s interesting to know and seems not very well known at this time:

    outputOptions(output, &quot;textbox&quot;, priority = 1)
    outputOptions(output, &quot;variables&quot;, priority = 2)

In that quest, I also _tried_ `try`:

    try(vars &lt;- all.vars(parse(text = input$text)))

That was pretty close, but still did not fix it.

The first solution I stumbled upon was: 

    vars &lt;- all.vars(parse(text = as.character(input$text)))

I suppose it would be interesting to know why it worked: is it because it slows things down enough? is it because `as.character` &quot;waits&quot; for `input$text` to be non-null?

Whatever the case may be, I am extremely grateful to Ramnath for his effort, patience and guidance.

R shiny passing reactive to selectInput choices

This question is related to [this one][1]. The two can generate the same functionality, but implementation is slightly different. One significant difference is that a `reactiveValue` is a container that can have several values, like `input$`. In [shiny documentation][2] functionality is usually implemented using `reactive()`, but in most cases I find `reactiveValues()` more convenient. Is there any catch here? Are there any other major differences between the two that I might not be aware off?  Are these two code snippets equivalent?

R Shiny: reactiveValues vs reactive

I&#39;ve reading everything I can about shiny reactive programming.  I&#39;m a bit confused.  The following all work but what is the preferred method and why?  Obviously the example below is simple but will I run into trouble when creating a larger application with any of the methods? 

I&#39;ve been tending to gravitate towards the style in server code #1.  Reason being, is that I&#39;m able to break up the if statements.  To me this seems much more readable.  Again, the simple examples below aren&#39;t terribly complex but you can easily imagine how server code 2 and server code 3 could get very confusing with lots of nested if / if else statements.

I&#39;ve got a shiny server version 0.4.0 and I want to have 4 small textInput boxes to look like this:

I want to output multiple lines of text using one `renderText()` command. However, this does not seem possible. For example, from the [shiny tutorial][1] we have truncated code in `server.R`:

Outputting multiple lines of text with renderText() in R shiny

At the risk of getting hit with a [mods &quot;too broad a question&quot; hammer][3], I want to ask given the plethora of interactive R `Shiny` tools and packages emerging, when do you use which one?

1. **Shiny** - to me only downside your project needs to run from shiny server but seems the best choice.

2. **shinydashboard** - Shiny but has nice Value boxes for callouts. 

3. **flexdashboard** - write it up in Rmd. What does that gain you that straight Shiny does not? Perhaps, useful to email to a client provided you are happy to pass over data? I have been playing around with `flexdashboard` but its inability to work with datatable (library(DT)) makes me feel like it needs a few more iterations.

Looking at other answers, I am not alone in [asking this question][1].

The creators are providing lots of galleries out there to showcase their packages/approach, but how do you know which path to go on? 

What are the clear advantages of using one over the other?

 - In `server.R` which parts should be sourced?
 - File hierarchy of project containing markdown documents, pictures,
   xml and source files

For example if I am using `navbarPage` and `tabsetPanel` in every `tabPanel` my code is starting to look quite messy after addition of several UI elements.

For organizing `ui.R` code I found quite nice solution from GitHub: [radiant code](https://github.com/mostly-harmless/radiant/blob/master/dev/marketing/ui.R)    
Solution is to use `renderUI` to render every `tabPanel` and in `server.R` tabs are sourced to different files.

I&#39;m creating a shiny web app and would like to set the size of the plot *and* scale. What I mean by that is I&#39;m looking for a way to set a finite height/width for my plot, and *then* scale that set sized image to the `mainPanel( plotOutput ())` area.

Take this as an example/analogous situation outside of `shiny`.

I&#39;d like to control the size of the image itself, as I find the `ggplot2` legends when using options like `colour = var` and `size = var` to be pretty small. Note the difficulty of reading axis labels for the bigger picture as well. I realize I may get into a situation where the size of the image doesn&#39;t scale well due to limited pixels, but I think I at least have *some* room to travel before I run into that.

Any suggestions? I&#39;ve tried playing with the following so far, but without luck:

Scale and size of plot in RStudio shiny

I know that in Shiny Server Pro there is a function of password control.
The question is that Shiny has function passwordInput(), which is like textInput()
Has anybody thought about how to do the following:

1) Launching the application only after correct password input
2) Launching the part of application after correct password input (for example, I have some tabs in shinydashboard, and I want to make an acces to one of them only by password)

Starting Shiny app after password input

I am in the process of creating a Shiny dashboard application, where the dashboard body is supposed to show some maps. So far no problem to get the map expand over the entire width of the body, but it&#39;s somehow not willing to adjust to the full height.

The leaflet itself is already set to cover 100% of the height, but it doesn&#39;t do the trick. As soon as I use the height attribute for the leafletOutput the leaflet object will not show at all, and I am left with an empty box.

How to get Leaflet for R use 100% of Shiny dashboard height

I&#39;m writing a Shiny app for visualizing insurance benefit plans at my company. Here is what I&#39;d like to happen:

- I&#39;ll have a `selectInput` or `sliderInput` where the user will choose the number of individuals on their medical plan
- A matching number of double sided sliders will appear (one for each member)
- They can then input their estimates for best/worst case medical expenses for each member on their plan
- I have code that will take those estimates and create side by side plots illustrating the forecast cost on the three plan offerings so they can decide which one is least expensive based on their estimates

Here&#39;s what it looks like (the transparent end sections are the result of HSA contributions from two of the plans. I thought it was a nice way to show both the premiums and medical expenses while showing the impact of the company HSA contribution. Thus, you&#39;d just compare the length of the solid colors).

I&#39;ve seen examples [like this](https://gist.github.com/wch/4211337) where the UI input itself is fixed (in this case, one `checkboxGroupInput` exists, but its contents are tailored based on the choice from another UI input), but I&#39;ve not seen examples of tailoring *the number* (or, say, type) of input elements spawned as the result of another UI input&#39;s contents.

Any suggestions on this (is it even possible)?

My last resort will be to create, say, 15 input sliders and initialize them to zero. My code will work just fine, but I&#39;d like to clean up the interface by not having to create that many sliders just for the occasional user who has a very large family.

Lastly, I have two functions that create objects to store a data frame for plotting based on the low and high medical expense estimates. They&#39;re called `best_case` and `worst_case` and both need the `expenses` object to work, so I call it as my first line as I learned from [this question](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/17683933/set-global-object-in-shiny)

I got some errors, so I used `browser()` to step through the `expenses` bit and noticed peculiar things like `input$ind1` not seeming to exist from within the `expenses` function.

I also played around with various `print()` statements in it to see what was happening. The most striking is when I do `print(names(input))` as the very first line in the function:

If I do something like `print(expenses)` inside of my `expenses` function, I also get duplicates:

Create dynamic number of input elements with R/Shiny

tooltip on shiny R?

I asked [a question][1] on how to plot dynamically according to user interactions, whose solution
works quite well on my machine. 

Now I want to make an on-line version and host it with [Shiny][2]. 

I have tried to put the code into `server.R` and invoke the `iden()` function inside `reactivePlot()`, but the part of `identify()` does not take effect. 

So, any hints on this task?
