I&#39;ve read a great deal of discussion recently (both on this site and elsewhere) about &quot;friendly URLs&quot; but I&#39;m not sure what exactly makes a URL &quot;friendly&quot; and why we really even care (up to a certain point).  Illustration:

The following is an example of a URL that would be held up by the majority of current web developers as &quot;friendly&quot;:

Whereas this would be considered &quot;unfriendly&quot; (i.e. bad, Neanderthal, ignorant, stupid):

My questions:

 - Doesn&#39;t the &quot;friendly&quot; URL contain duplicate identifying information about the blog post in question?  In other words, once you have the id (123) of the post, why do you need the title?  Wouldn&#39;t this be a violation of the &quot;don&#39;t repeat yourself&quot; mantra?
 - What difference does the form of a URL make as far as users are concerned?  Do users ever actually **type** full URLs by hand (other than the TLD, of course)?  Do users ever look to the URL of a page to determine what the page is about?  Why do we need the title of the blog post in the URL?  Isn&#39;t that what the page&#39;s `&lt;title&gt;` tag and content are for?
 - I often hear SEO as a reason why the &quot;friendly&quot; URL form is preferred.  Why does a search engine spider care about the URL?  Aren&#39;t they just automated pieces of software that crawl pages (and the links to other pages that are contained within them)?  If search engines were written like other software components (e.g. database access components), the URL would just be a meaningless identifier (similar to a rowguid in a relational database) to them. If I were designing a database schema with something like the &quot;friendly&quot; URL above as a table&#39;s primary key, I would (quite correctly) get chewed out.

What makes a &quot;friendly URL&quot;?

I have a page `index.php` with 3 Bootstrap tabs in it, and for each tab I am generating its content after user clicks on it.  
For example:

- when page is loaded I will execute SQL query that will get data from database only for first tab. 
- when user clicks on the second tab, I am executing a query that will take data and display it in selected tab. 

Is this good approach? Is Google going too see all that data when it index the page containing all this tabs? I do not want to pull all data at once because of performance issues.

I am afraid that search engines will not see second and third tabs contents. Or at least they will not relate them with index.php page. Am I wrong?

To handle Canonical URL is it best practice to do a 301 redirect or better to have the same IP Address for both www and non www domain?

For example:

Articles on React.js like to point out, that React.js is great for SEO purposes. Unfortunately, I&#39;ve never read, how you actually do it.
Do you simply implement `_escaped_fragment_` as in https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/docs/getting-started and let React render the page on the server, when the url contains `_escaped_fragment_`, or is there more to it?

Being able not to rely on `_escaped_fragment_` would be great, as probably not all potentially crawling sites (e.g. in sharing functionalities) implement `_escaped_fragment_`.

How do you use React.js for SEO?

I have been using a noscript tag to show a warning when users have JavaScript disabled or are using script blocking plugins like Noscript. The website will not function properly if JavaScript is disabled and users may not figure out why it is not working without the warning.

After the latest Google algorithm shuffle, I have seen the daily traffic drop to about 1/3 of what it was in the previous months. I have also seen pages that were ranking #1 or #2 in the SERPS drop out of the results. After doing some investigating in webmaster tools, I noticed that &quot;JavaScript&quot; is listed as #16 in the keywords section. This makes no sense because the site has nothing to do with JavaScript and the only place that word appears is in the text between the noscript tags.

It seems that Google is now including and indexing the content between the noscript tags. I don&#39;t believe that this was happening before. The warning is three sentences. I&#39;d imagine that having the same three sentences appearing at the top of every single page on the site could have a damaging effect on the SEO.

Do you think this could be causing a problem with SEO? And, is there any other method to provide a warning to users who have JavaScript disabled in a way that won&#39;t be indexed or read by search engines?

* I own a new blog service, www.domain.com, that allow users to blog on accountname.domain.com.

1) What happens with custom tags? Do search engines ignore the whole content within those tags? i.e. suppose I have

How do search engines deal with AngularJS applications?

I&#39;ve been working on how to make a SPA crawlable by google based on google&#39;s [instructions](https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/?hl=iw&amp;csw=1). Even though there are quite a few general explanations I couldn&#39;t find anywhere a more thorough step-by-step tutorial with actual examples.  After having finished this I would like to share my solution so that others may also make use of it and possibly improve it further. &lt;br/&gt; 
I am using `MVC` with `Webapi` controllers, and [Phantomjs](http://phantomjs.org/) on the server side, and [Durandal](http://durandaljs.com/) on the client side with `push-state` enabled; I also use [Breezejs](http://www.breezejs.com/) for client-server data interaction, all of which I strongly recommend, but I&#39;ll try to give a general enough explanation that will also help people using other platforms.&lt;br/&gt;


How to make a SPA SEO crawlable?

There are a lot of cool tools for making powerful &quot;single-page&quot; JavaScript websites nowadays. In my opinion, this is done right by letting the server act as an API (and nothing more) and letting the client handle all of the HTML generation stuff. The problem with this &quot;pattern&quot; is the lack of search engine support. I can think of two solutions:

 1. When the user enters the website, let the server render the page exactly as the client would upon navigation. So if I go to `http://example.com/my_path` directly the server would render the same thing as the client would if I go to `/my_path` through pushState.
 2. Let the server provide a special website only for the search engine bots. If a normal user visits `http://example.com/my_path` the server should give him a JavaScript heavy version of the website. But if the Google bot visits, the server should give it some minimal HTML with the content I want Google to index.

The first solution is discussed further [here](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6193858/pushstate-and-seo). I have been working on a website doing this and it&#39;s not a very nice experience. It&#39;s not DRY and in my case I had to use two different template engines for the client and the server.

I think I have seen the second solution for some good ol&#39; Flash websites. I like this approach much more than the first one and with the right tool on the server it could be done  quite painlessly.

So what I&#39;m really wondering is the following:

 * Can you think of any better solution?
 * What are the disadvantages with the second solution? If Google in some way finds out that I&#39;m not serving the exact same content for the Google bot as a regular user, would I then be punished in the search results?

Many people have been saying, use pushState rather than hashbang.

What I don&#39;t understand is, how would you be search-engine friendly without using hashbang?

Presumably your pushState content is generated by client-side JavaScript code.

The scenario is thusly:

I&#39;m on `example.com`. My user clicks a link: `href=&quot;example.com/blog&quot;`

pushState captures the click, updates the URL, grabs a JSON file from somewhere, and creates the listing of blog posts in the content area.

With hashbangs, google knows to go to the escaped_fragment URL to get their static content.

With pushState, Google just sees nothing as it can&#39;t use the JavaScript code to load the JSON and subsequently create the template.

The only way to do it I can see is to render the template on the server side, but that completely negates the benefits of pushing the application layer to the client.

So am I getting this right, pushState is not SEO friendly for client-side applications at all?

I am working on a ASP application and the code, template and files are organized in a way that does not allow me to alter anything outside the body tag. So I am thinking about inserting the meta tags inside the body -- like this:

I am wondering how good it is to put meta tags inside the body of an HTML document. How does it affect:

 1. search engines
 2. browsers

When should a trailing slash be used in a URL? For example - should my URL look like `/about-us/` or like `/about-us`?
 
I am fully aware of the SEO-related issues - duplicate content and the canonical thing; I&#39;m trying to figure out which one I should use in the context of serving pages _correctly_ alone.

For example, my colleague is thinking that a trailing slash at the end means it&#39;s a &quot;folder&quot; - a &quot;directory&quot;, so this is not a correct style. But I think that without a slash in the end - it&#39;s not quite correct either, because it almost looks like a folder, but it isn&#39;t and it&#39;s not a normal file either, but a filename without extension.

Is there a proper way of knowing which to use?

I haven&#39;t found a clear and updated answer, even after googling for a few hours, so here it goes:

1. I am aware of the advantages and disadvantages of both Microdata and JSON-LD. I also know that Microdata was dropped from W3C (and consequently from the browsers&#39; API). What I&#39;m not sure about is that how it will affect any site where Microdata is used specifically for SEO purpose.

2. Does Google support JSON-LD for SERPs? What format does it recommend to use? I am looking for updated answers - not from 2011 or 2012 (if they are still applicable though, feel free to post it).

3. What is more appropriate for a dynamic site with lots of contents (think: 50000 videos, images etc): JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa? Why?

After a site redesign, I&#39;ve got a couple of pages that need to be redirected. Everything is staying on the same domain, just a couple of things have been reorganised and/or renamed. They are of the form:

/contact.php

is now:

/contact-us.php

Using the .htaccess file, I&#39;ve added this line, which is the one I find recommended most:

    RedirectMatch 301 /contact.php /contact-us.php

This is mostly fine - it does the job - the problem is, it also redirects:

 - /team1/contact.php
 - /non-existant-folder/contact.php

Is there a way of specifying that I only want to redirect the contact.php in the root?
