I&#39;m reading the Laravel Blade [documentation][1] and I can&#39;t figure out how to assign variables inside a template for use later. I can&#39;t do `{{ $old_section = &quot;whatever&quot; }}` because that will echo &quot;whatever&quot; and I don&#39;t want that.

I understand that I can do `&lt;?php $old_section = &quot;whatever&quot;; ?&gt;`, but that&#39;s not elegant.

Is there a better, elegant way to do that in a Blade template?

What functionality does that provide over the older:

    &#39;slot2&#39;=&gt;&quot;The content of Slot 2&quot;])
using the exact same &#39;component-tpl.blade.php&#39; Blade template?

In blade template i use last() method to find last iteration of foreach loop:

    @foreach ($colors as $k =&gt; $v)

I am writing the logic for an edit form and have some complications when displaying data in the inputs. 

When I initially show the form, I show the records values like: 

    value=&quot;{{$dog-&gt;title}}&quot;

Then when the form does not pass the validation I need to show the old input, so that user does not loose what he has already input. So I need to have a way to display old data like: 

    value=&quot;{{old(&#39;title&#39;)}}&quot;

Because I need to input old data in case it exists, I ended up with this code: 

    value=&quot;{{$dog-&gt;title or old(&#39;title&#39;)}}&quot;

And in controller I check if Request has old input, I assign the $dog var a null value. 

I wanted to ask if that is considered an OK practice or is there a better and &#39;correct&#39; way to do it?

I&#39;m trying to understand the best place to put a global function in Laravel 4. For example, date formatting. I don&#39;t think making a facade is worth it as facades are too modular. Is there a truncate modifier for the blade templates in Laravel, pretty much like Smarty?

I know I could just write out the actual php in the template but i&#39;m looking for something a little nicer to write (let&#39;s not get into the whole PHP is a templating engine debate).

So for example i&#39;m looking for something like:

    {{ $myVariable|truncate:&quot;10&quot;:&quot;...&quot; }}

I know I could use something like Twig via composer but I&#39;m hoping for built in functionality in Laravel itself.

If not is it possible to create your own reusable modifiers like Smarty provides. I like the fact that Blade doesn’t overkill with all the syntax but I think truncate is a real handy function to have.

I am loading my css using this format:

and it loads fine for all http requests

But when I load my login page with SSL (https), I get a `...page... was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure stylesheet &#39;http...`

Can someone please tell me how do I make blade load assets over https instead of http?

Should I be trying to load the assets securely? Or is it not Blade&#39;s job?

I&#39;m building a small CMS in Laravel and I tried to show the content (which is stored in the DB). It is showing the HTML tags instead of executing them. Its like there is an auto html_entity_decode for all printed data.

I tried to print the content using the curly brace.

and triple curly brace.

And they give the same result. I need to execute those HTML tags instead of escaping them.

I have installed some Visual Studio Code extensions to handle Laravel Blade Codes like

But they are not helping me to format Laravel Blade Codes [blade.php files]. I mean they are not auto indenting the codes as I expected. But I have seen blade codes online which are well indented in visual studio Code IDE.

How to Format Laravel Blade Codes in Visual Studio Code?

I am using Laravel 4. I would like to access the current URL inside an `@if` condition in a view using the Laravel&#39;s Blade templating engine but I don&#39;t know how to do it.

I know that it can be done using something like `&lt;?php echo URL::current(); ?&gt;` but It&#39;s not possible inside an `@if` blade statement.

The idea is:
I have a table language in MySQL. I want to show the dropdown list with multiple attributes to choose, and I also want to search with angularjs as well. That&#39;s why I want to pass the variable from the controller to JavaScript. Additionally, I have the function inside LanguageController called initLang to check if any language is exist inside the database, it isn&#39;t displayed inside the dropdown list in create the view.
