Then, while on `mybranch1`, I have done `git merge --no-commit mybranch2`

Now I want do discard everything (the `merge` command) so that `mybranch1` is back to what it was before.
I have no idea how do I go about this.

I ran a `git pull` that ended in a conflict. I resolved the conflict  and everything is fine now (I used mergetool also).

When I commit the resolved file with `git commit file.php -m &quot;message&quot;` I get the error:

    fatal: cannot do a partial commit during a merge.

I had the same issue before and using `-a` in commit worked perfectly. I think it&#39;s not the perfect way because I don&#39;t want to commit all changes. I want to commit files separately with separate comments. How can I do that? Why doesn&#39;t git allow users to commit files separately after a merge? I could not find a satisfactory answer to this problem.

I have some local files, I pull from remote branch and there are conflicts.  I know that I would like to keep my local changes and ignore the remote changes causing conflicts. Is there a command I can use to in effect say &quot;mark all conflicts as resolved, use local&quot;?

The files have been edited not by me and show lines inserted with: 

- HEAD after less than signs (`&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt; HEAD`)
- lines of changed code 
- a string of equals signs (`=======`)
- the new version of the code
- another line starting with greater than signs and the name of the branch (`&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; gh-pages`)

What&#39;s worse is that the file contents are no longer in order. Does anyone know how I get those files back to normal, and the changes I made in the gh-branch merged into the master branch?

Story: in the middle of a project my colleague created a new branch from *master* and started doing her heavy re-factoring  work. I created my branch from *master* and started doing new stuff on the page. We are committing regularly, but only I can rebase code to *master* (because colleagues changes are too heavy and cannot be deployed from master yet). Unfortunately some of our work rely on the same files. So after few days of work when she finally wanted to rebase her changes to *master*, she had a lot of git conflicts.

**Question 1 is**: how to prevent lot of git conflicts when we are working on same files? (or what is the best practice in this situation?)

**but this isn&#39;t the end of our question**, ...to be absolutely correct she tried to do rebase from master to her branch (to have changes I committed), so the commit map should look something like this

And this is what is bothering us. During these rebases she was fixing those conflicts. But git doesn&#39;t remember her decision on conflict fix, so when she did another git rebase from *master* to *her-branch* she had to **fix the same git conflicts again** that she was fixing in previous rebases.

**Question 2 is**: how to tell git to remember git conflict fix after git rebase from *master* branch, so after next rebase we don&#39;t have to fix the same conflicts again?

When I do `git rebase branch1` in my `branch1-local` I get conflicts. I solve the conflict, do `git add &lt;conflicted-add&gt;` and then do `git rebase --continue` as git asks me to do. After that a new commit is applied. A new conflict shows up. But is the same conflict again in the same file. I do it again, `git add`, the `git rebase --continue`, and then it all repeats again until I repeat this for each commit being rebased on.

Why rebase is having me redo the same conflict resolution over and over again?
