I am using Django for a project and is already in production.

In the production environment 500.html is rendered whenever a server error occurs.

How do I test the rendering of 500.html in dev environment? Or how do I render 500.html in dev, if I turn-off debug I still get the errors and not 500.html

background: I include some page elements based on a page and some are missing when 500.html is called and want to debug it in dev environment.

I come from a .NET background and am completely new to Java and am trying to get my head around the Java project structure. 

My typical .NET solution structure contains projects that denote logically distinct components, usually named using the format: 

`MyCompany.SomeApplication.ProjectName`

The project name usually equals the root namespace for the project. I might break the namespace down further if it&#39;s a large project, but more often than not I see no need to namespace any further. 

Now in Java, you have applications consisting of projects, and then you have a new logical level - the package. What is a package? What should it contain? How do you namespace within this `App.Project.Package` structure? Where do JARs fit into all this? Basically, can someone provide a newbies intro to Java application structure?

Java project structure explained for newbies?

I know that this is a complicated question, but I would like know which one is better in the case of a system that it&#39;s already in production, with a lot of bugs and really bad design at all. A really mess.

Actually, I&#39;m asking this because I&#39;m already converting this project to Maven and I&#39;m facing A LOT of problems. 
I needed to adjust the folder structure, separate a terrible framework made at the company from the project (it was converted into a jar lib), fix a lot of details that broke the project all the time, configure the POM.xml to make everything that Ant was already doing and discover the libs that are really used in the application as their versions (a big part of the libs was renamed without the version number and the manifest file was empty).

Well, it was a really hell. I went crazy during this task and the question that followed me all the time was &quot;And if I was converting it to Ivy? Would be easier?&quot;.

I never worked with Ivy, but as I know it work with Ant and it&#39;s easier then Maven to adapt the project. On the other hand, Maven it&#39;s much more used allover the word (Am I wrong?) and this should have a reason!

So there it&#39;s my questions:

- __Integration with Jenkins / Hudson__: With Ivy it&#39;s so easy as with Maven?
- __Sonar plugin__: Same question above. The integration it&#39;s simple to?
- __Plugin for Eclipse__: This is a very weak point of Maven. The plugin terrible, but I don&#39;t know the Ivy ones.
- __Deploy process__: Once that it&#39;s everything configured, deploy and publish the project with maven it&#39;s extremely easy. And with Ivy?
- __Conversion__: Well, my experience in converting a project to Maven was terrible, but the system didn&#39;t helped. The option that I had was that Maven it&#39;s amazing to new projects, projects working with Maven since it was created, but not a good choice if you have a big and unorganized project. Am I wrong?

Maven or Ivy? Which one is better with a system already in production? And the other differences?

I&#39;m working on a project with Node.js and the server-side code is becoming large enough that I would like to split it off into multiple files.  It appears this has been done client-side for ages, development is done by inserting a `script` tag for each file and only for distribution is something like &quot;Make&quot; used to put everything together.  I realize there&#39;s no point in concatting all the server-side code so I&#39;m not asking how to do that.  The closest thing I can find to use is `require()`, however it doesn&#39;t behave quite like `script` does in the browser in that require&#39;d files do not share a common namespace.

Looking at some older Node.js projects, like [Shooter][1], it appears this was once not the case, that or I&#39;m missing something really simple in my code.  My require&#39;d files cannot access the global calling namespace at compile time nor run time.  Is there any simple way around this or are we forced to make all our require&#39;d JS files completely autonomous from the calling scope?

What is the best (or as good as possible) general SVN ignore pattern to use? 

There are a number of different IDE, editor, compiler, plug-in, platform, etc. specific files and some file types that &quot;overlap&quot; (i.e. desirable for some types projects and not for others). 

**There are however, a large number of file types that you just never want included in source control automatically regardless the specifics of your development environment.**

The answer to this question would serve as a good starting point for any project - only requiring them to add the few environment specific items they need. It could be adapted for other Version Control Systems (VCS) as well.

Best general SVN Ignore Pattern?

Currently my workflow with Emacs when I am coding in C or C++ involves three windows.  The largest on the right contains the file I am working with.  The left is split into two, the bottom being a shell which I use to type in compile or make commands, and the top is often some sort of documentation or README file that I want to consult while I am working.  Now I know there are some pretty expert Emacs users out there, and I am curious what other Emacs functionally is useful if the intention is to use it as a complete IDE.  Specifically, most IDEs usually fulfill these functions is some form or another:

  - Source code editor
  - Compiler
  - Debugging
  - Documentation Lookup
  - Version Control
  - OO features like class lookup and object inspector 

For a few of these, it&#39;s pretty obvious how Emacs can fit these functions, but what about the rest?  Also, if a specific language must be focused on, I&#39;d say it should be C++. 

**Edit:** One user pointed out that I should have been more specific when I said &#39;what about the rest&#39;.  Mostly I was curious about efficient version control, as well as documentation lookup.  For example, in SLIME it is fairly easy to do a quick hyperspec lookup on a Lisp function.  Is there a quick way to look up something in C++ STL documentation (if I forgot the exact syntax of [hash_map][1], for example)?

Using Emacs as an IDE

I have added the JavaScript that I need to the bottom of my pages so that I can make use of Google Analytics. Only problem is that I am sure that it is counting all my development work as hits. Seeing as I probably see some of those pages a hundred times a day it will really skew my readings. Is there a way to turn it off from a particular IP address or is this something that should be built into my build process so it only gets added when I build for deployment?

# Intro

I can&#39;t figure out a good way to set up a development environment on OS X using Docker and Boot2Docker. The problem I&#39;m hitting is how to manage the source code so that:

1. I can modify the code on OS X using the tools (text editor, IDE, git, etc) I already have installed.
2. Those modifications are reflected in the Docker container so if I re-run tests or refresh a webpage, I can see my changes immediately.

In theory, this should be easy to do by mounting my source code as a volume:

    docker run -it -v /path/to/my/source/code:/src some-docker-image

Unfortunately, this has two major issues that make it completely unusable on OS X:

# Issue #1: Mounted volumes on VirtualBox (which use vboxsf) are extremely slow

For example, here is how long it takes Jekyll to compile my [homepage](https://github.com/brikis98/yevgeniy-brikman-homepage) if the source code is part of the Docker image:

The default watch mechanisms in SBT, Jekyll, and grunt use technologies such as inotify, which do not work if they are running in a Docker container and the changes are made in OS X to a mounted folder.

# Workarounds I tried

I searched for solutions (including all the ones on SO) and tried out a few of them, but have not found a successful one:

1. I [switched Boot2Docker to use NFS](https://gist.github.com/neilbartley/73f2eb334f04bf95a906), but it was just as slow.
1. I tried [Vagrant + NFS](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/28421391/whats-the-fastest-way-to-migrate-from-boot2docker-to-vagrantnfs-on-mac-os-x), and that was also just as slow.
1. I tried a [Samba mount](http://www.slideshare.net/Docker/dockercon-beahappierdevwithdocker140613160957phpapp02-37589065), but the folder always showed up empty in the Docker container.
1. I tried to use the [Unison file system](https://github.com/leighmcculloch/docker-unison), which worked briefly to sync files, but then kept [showing connection errors](https://github.com/leighmcculloch/docker-unison/issues/2).
1. I enabled [polling in Jekyll](http://salizzar.net/2014/11/06/creating-a-github-jekyll-blog-using-docker/), but that significantly increased the delay until my changes were picked up.
1. I tried [Dinghy](https://github.com/codekitchen/dinghy), a &quot;faster, friendlier Docker on OS X with Vagrant&quot; and got *some* improvement. Instead of Jekyll compilation being 10-15x slower, it was 2-3x slower. That&#39;s better, but still not quite usable.

Has anyone found a solution that actually works and allows you to productively develop code with Docker and OS X?

# Update: a solution at last!

I have finally found a solution that seems productive using Boot2Docker + rsync. I used `script/server -e production` to start rails in production mode. It did and I got no errors. However how do I tell if it is in production mode? I tried a non-existent route, and I got a similar error page I did in development. 

I thought if under production model, I get the 404 error page that is in my /public folder.

Pre-installed Linux for Web Developers?

Every time a new developer joins the team or the computer a developer is using changes, the developer needs to do lots of work to setup the local development environment to make the current project work. As a SCRUM team we are trying to automate everything including deployment and tests so what I am asking is: is there a tool or a practice to make local development environment setup automated?

For example to setup my environment, first I had to install eclipse, then SVN, Apache, Tomcat, MySQL, PHP. After that I populated the DB and I had to do minor changes in the various configuration files etc... Is there a way to reduce this labor to one-click?

I am looking to start writing a sophisticated application in JavaScript to run on the web. I&#39;ve written little bits of throwaway code in JavaScript before, using the DOM directly and a little bit of jQuery. But this is the first time I&#39;m looking to write a full-fledged application to run in the browser.
