I am looking at some existing code in a web application. I saw this:

`window.setTimeout(function () { ... })`

Is this the same as just executing the function content right away?

Is setTimeout with no delay the same as executing the function instantly?

I have two JS functions. One calls the other. Within the calling function, I&#39;d like to call the other, wait for that function to finish, then continue on. So, for example/pseudo code:

    function firstFunction(){
        for(i=0;i&lt;x;i++){
            // do something
        }

    function secondFunction(){
        firstFunction()
        // now wait for firstFunction to finish...
        // do something else

I came up with this solution, but don&#39;t know if this is a smart way to go about it.

Proper way to wait for one function to finish before continuing?

I&#39;m trying to build a tool for testing the delay of my internet connection, more specifically web site load times. I thought of using the python [requests][1] module for the loading part.

Problem is, it&#39;s got no built-in functionality to measure the time it took to get the full response. For this I thought I would use the `timeit` module.

What I&#39;m not sure about is that if I run timeit like so:

    t = timeit.Timer(&quot;requests.get(&#39;http://www.google.com&#39;)&quot;, &quot;import requests&quot;)

I&#39;m I really measuring the time it took the response to arrive or is it the time it takes for the request to be built, sent, received, etc? I&#39;m guessing I could maybe disregard that excecution time since I&#39;m testing networks with very long delays (~700ms)?

Is there a better way to do this programatically?

What is the easiest way to create a delay (or parking) queue with Python, Pika and RabbitMQ? I have seen an similar [questions][1], but none for Python. 

I find this an useful idea when designing applications, as it allows us to throttle messages that needs to be re-queued again.

There are always the possibility that you will receive more messages than you can handle, maybe the HTTP server is slow, or the database is under too much stress.

I also found it very useful when something went wrong in scenarios where there is a zero tolerance to losing messages, and while re-queuing messages that could not be handled may solve that. It can also cause problems where the message will be queued over and over again. Potentially causing performance issues, and log spam.

The JSON data isn&#39;t even that large, 300KB only, I think what I need to accomplish is to put a delay of ~1 sec on the search to wait for the user to finish typing, instead of performing the action on each keystroke. AngularJS does this internally, and after reading docs and other topics on here I couldn&#39;t find a specific answer.

I would appreciate any pointers on how I can delay the instant search.

Note, for the below question:  All assets are local on the device -- no network streaming is taking place.  The videos contain audio tracks.

I&#39;m working on an iOS application that requires playing video files with minimum delay to start the video clip in question.  Unfortunately we do not know what specific video clip is next until we actually need to start it up.  Specifically: When one video clip is playing, we will know what the next set of (roughly) 10 video clips are, but we don&#39;t know which one exactly, until it comes time to &#39;immediately&#39; play the next clip.

What I&#39;ve done to look at actual start delays is to call `addBoundaryTimeObserverForTimes` on the video player, with a time period of one millisecond to see when the video actually started to play, and I take the difference of that time stamp with the first place in the code that indicates which asset to start playing.

From what I&#39;ve seen thus-far, I have found that using the combination of `AVAsset` loading, and then creating an `AVPlayerItem` from that once it&#39;s ready, and then waiting for `AVPlayerStatusReadyToPlay` before I call play, tends to take between 1 and 3 seconds to start the clip.

I&#39;ve since switched to what I think is roughly equivalent: calling `[AVPlayerItem playerItemWithURL:]` and waiting for `AVPlayerItemStatusReadyToPlay` to play.  Roughly same performance.

One thing I&#39;m observing is that the first AVPlayer item load is slower than the rest.  Seems one idea is to pre-flight the AVPlayer with a short / empty asset before trying to play the first video might be of good general practice. I&#39;d love to get the video start times down as much as possible, and have some ideas of things to experiment with, but would like some guidance from anyone that might be able to help.

**Update: idea 7, below, as-implemented yields switching times of around 500 ms.  This is an improvement, but it it&#39;d be nice to get this even faster.**

**Idea 1:  Use N AVPlayers (won&#39;t work)**

Using ~ 10 `AVPPlayer` objects and start-and-pause all ~ 10 clips, and once we know which one we really need, switch to, and un-pause the correct `AVPlayer`, and start all over again for the next cycle.

I don&#39;t think this works, because I&#39;ve read there is roughly a limit of 4 active `AVPlayer&#39;s` in iOS. **Idea 2: Use AVQueuePlayer (won&#39;t work)**

I don&#39;t believe that shoving 10 `AVPlayerItems` into an `AVQueuePlayer` would pre-load them all for seamless start.  `AVQueuePlayer` is a queue, and I think it really only makes the next video in the queue ready for immediate playback.  I don&#39;t know which one out of ~10 videos we do want to play back, until it&#39;s time to start that one. **Idea 3: Load, Play, and retain `AVPlayerItems` in background (not 100% sure yet -- but not looking good)**

I&#39;m looking at if there is any benefit to load and play the first second of each video clip in the background (suppress video and audio output), and keep a reference to each `AVPlayerItem`, and when we know which item needs to be played for real, swap that one in, and swap the background AVPlayer with the active one.  Rinse and Repeat.

The theory would be that recently played `AVPlayer/AVPlayerItem`&#39;s may still hold some prepared resources which would make subsequent playback faster.  So far, I have not seen benefits from this, but I might not have the `AVPlayerLayer` setup correctly for the background.  I doubt this will really improve things from what I&#39;ve seen.

**Idea 4: Use a different file format -- maybe one that is faster to load?**  

I&#39;m currently using .m4v&#39;s (video-MPEG4) H.264 format.  H.264 has a lot of different codec options, so it&#39;s possible that some options are faster to seek than others.  I have found that using more advanced settings that make the file size smaller increase the seek time, but have not found any options that go the other way.

**Idea 5: Combination of lossless video format + AVQueuePlayer**

If there is a video format that is fast to load, but maybe where the file size is insane, one idea might be to pre-prepare the first 10 seconds of each video clip with a version that is bloated but faster to load, but back that up with an asset that is encoded in H.264.  Use an AVQueuePlayer, and add the first 10 seconds in the uncompressed file format, and follow that up with one that is in H.264 which gets up to 10 seconds of prepare/preload time.  So I&#39;d get &#39;the best&#39; of both worlds:  fast start times, but also benefits from a more compact format.

**Idea 6: Use a non-standard AVPlayer / write my own / use someone else&#39;s**

Given my needs, maybe I can&#39;t use AVPlayer, but have to resort to AVAssetReader, and decode the first few seconds (possibly write raw file to disk), and when it comes to playback, make use of the raw format to play it back fast.  Seems like a huge project to me, and if I go about it in a naive way, it&#39;s unclear / unlikely to even work better.  Each decoded and uncompressed video frame is 2.25 MB.  Naively speaking -- if we go with ~ 30 fps for the video, I&#39;d end up with ~60 MB/s read-from-disk requirement, which is probably impossible / pushing it.  Obviously we&#39;d have to do some level of image compression (perhaps native openGL/es compression formats via PVRTC)... but that&#39;s kind crazy.  Maybe there is a library out there that I can use?

**Idea 7: Combine everything into a single movie asset, and seekToTime**

One idea that might be easier than some of the above, is to combine everything into a single movie, and use seekToTime.  The thing is that we&#39;d be jumping all around the place.  Essentially random access into the movie. How to reduce iOS AVPlayer start delay

Is there a nice simple method of delaying a function call whilst letting the thread continue executing?

e.g.

I&#39;m aware that this can be achieved by using a timer and event handlers, but I was wondering if there is a standard c# way to achieve this?

If anyone is curious, the reason that this is required is that foo() and bar() are in different (singleton) classes which my need to call each other in exceptional circumstances. The problem being that this is done at initialisation so foo needs to call bar which needs an instance of the foo class which is being created... hence the delayed call to bar() to ensure that foo is fully instanciated.. Reading this back almost smacks of bad design !

I&#39;ll take the points about bad design under advisement! I&#39;ve long thought that I might be able to improve the system, however, this nasty situation *only* occurs when an exception is thrown, at all other times the two singletons co-exist very nicely. I think that I&#39;m not going to messaround with nasty async-patters, rather I&#39;m going to refactor the initialisation of one of the classes.

Delayed function calls

I have a `click` event that is triggered from another place automatically for the first time. My problem is that it runs too soon, since the required variables are still being defined by Flash and web services. So right now I have:

I am trying to create a cascading effect by applying an animation to each child element. I was wondering if there is a better way to do it than this:

I need to add a delay between the execution of two lines in a(same) function. Is there any favorable option to do this?

**Note:** I don&#39;t need two different functions to do this, and the delay must not affect other functions&#39; execution.

I&#39;m struggling to implement something I assumed would be fairly simple in Rx.

I have a list of items, and I want to have each item emitted with a delay.

It seems the Rx delay() operator just shifts the emission of all items by the specified delay, not each individual item.

Here&#39;s some testing code. It groups items in a list. Each group should then have a delay applied before being emitted.

    Observable.range(1, 5)
        .groupBy(n -&gt; n % 5)
        .flatMap(g -&gt; g.toList())
        .delay(50, TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS)

I have a JavaScript code that I need to add a sleep/wait function to. The code I am running is already in a function, eg:

I have heard that a possible solution might include

    setTimeout
but I am not sure how to use it in this case.

I can&#39;t use PHP, as my server does not support it, although using jQuery would be fine.

JavaScript sleep/wait before continuing

I have written a program which sends more than 15 queries to Google in each iteration, total iterations is about 50. For testing I have to run this program several times. However, by doing that, after several times, Google blocks me. is there any ways so I can fool google maybe by adding delays between each iteration? Also I have heard that google can actually learn the timesteps. so I need these delays to be random so google cannot find a patter from it to learn my behavior. also it should be short so the whole process doesn&#39;t take so much.
Does anyone knows something, or can provide me a piece of code in python?
