I&#39;m trying to summarize my knowledge about the most popular JavaScript package managers, bundlers, and task runners. Please correct me if I&#39;m wrong:

 - `npm` &amp; `bower` are package managers. They just download the dependencies and don&#39;t know how to build projects on their own. What they know is to call `webpack`/`gulp`/`grunt` after fetching all the dependencies.
 - `bower` is like `npm`, but builds a flattened dependency trees (unlike `npm` which does it recursively). Meaning `npm` fetches the dependencies for each dependency (may fetch the same a few times), while `bower` expects you to manually include sub-dependencies. Sometimes `bower` and `npm` are used together for front-end and back-end respectively (since each megabyte might matter in front-end).
 - `grunt` and `gulp` are task runners to automate everything that can be automated (i.e. compile CSS/Sass, optimize images, make a bundle and minify/transpile it).
 - `grunt` vs. `gulp` (is like `maven` vs. `gradle` or configuration vs. code). Grunt is based on configuring separate independent tasks, each task opens/handles/closes file. Gulp requires less amount of code and is based on Node streams, which allows it to build pipe chains (w/o reopening the same file) and makes it faster. 
 - `webpack` (`webpack-dev-server`) - for me it&#39;s a task runner with hot reloading of changes which allows you to forget about all JS/CSS watchers. 
 - `npm`/`bower` + plugins may replace task runners. Their abilities often intersect so there are different implications if you need to use `gulp`/`grunt` over `npm` + plugins. But task runners are definitely better for complex tasks (e.g. &quot;on each build create bundle, transpile from ES6 to ES5, run it at all browsers emulators, make screenshots and deploy to dropbox through ftp&quot;).
 - `browserify` allows packaging node modules for browsers. `browserify` vs `node`&#39;s `require` is actually [AMD vs CommonJS][1].

***Questions:***
 
 1. *What is `webpack` &amp; `webpack-dev-server`?* Official documentation says it&#39;s a module bundler but for me it&#39;s just a task runner. *What&#39;s the difference?*
 2. *Where would you use `browserify`? Can&#39;t we do the same with node/ES6 imports?* 
 3. *When would you use `gulp`/`grunt` over `npm` + plugins?*
 4. *Please provide examples when you need to use a combination*

NPM vs. Bower vs. Browserify vs. Gulp vs. Grunt vs. Webpack

What is the fundamental difference between `bower` and `npm`? Just want something plain and simple. I&#39;ve seen some of my colleagues use `bower` and `npm` interchangeably in their projects.

I&#39;m new to using npm and bower, building my first app in emberjs :).  
I do have a bit of experience with rails, so I&#39;m familiar with the idea of files for listing dependencies (such as bundler Gemfile)

Question: when I want to add a package (and check in the dependency into git), where does it belong - into `package.json` or into `bower.json`?

From what I gather,  
running `bower install` will fetch the package and put it in `/vendor` directory,  
running `npm install` it will fetch it and put it into `/node_modules` directory. 

[This SO answer](https://stackoverflow.com/a/16493586/1592915) says bower is for front-end and npm is for backend stuff.  
[Ember-app-kit](https://github.com/stefanpenner/ember-app-kit) seems to adhere to this distinction from the first glance... But instructions in gruntfile for [enabling some functionality](https://github.com/stefanpenner/ember-app-kit/blob/master/Gruntfile.js#L40-L42) give two explicit commands, so I&#39;m totally confused here.

Intuitively I would guess that  

1. **npm install --save-dev package-name** would be equivalent to adding the package-name to my package.json 

2. **bower install --save package-name** might be the same as adding the package to my *bower.json* and running **bower install**?  


If that is the case, when should I ever install packages explicitly like that without adding them to the file that manages dependencies (apart from installing command line tools globally)?

I am creating my first Bower component. After running `bower init` the script asks me &#39;what types of modules does this package expose?&#39; with these options:

 - amd 
 - es6 
 - globals 
 - node

What is the bower (and npm) version syntax?

I am trying to set up Bower on a build server at our organization&#39;s data center, but `git`&#39;s port does not appear to be open on the data center&#39;s firewall.  I can use the git command line client to clone via `https://[repo]`, but not `git://[repo]`.

Is there a switch or preference which will instruct bower to perform git clone using `https` rather than the `git` protocol?

I&#39;ve looked at the source, and considered changing the resolution code to replace `git://` with `https://`, but I figured I&#39;d ask before I go to those lengths.

Bower install fails with 502 - Bad Gateway when downloading bower packages.

For example bower install for ember library gives following response in command line.

When http://bower.herokuapp.com/ is accessed directly from URL it gives the following message.

I&#39;m trying to install Bower on XUbuntu 13.10, following the instructions on the Bower home page, after doing `sudo apt-get install npm` and `sudo npm install -g bower` I get the following after issuing `bower` on the command line:

    /usr/bin/env: node: No such file or directory

I then install Node (even though I assume that would not be unnecessary since Bower&#39;s only dependency would be NPM, correct?). Anyhow, after I install node with `sudo apt-get install node` any of the Bower commands, such as `bower help`, simply don&#39;t do anything, i.e. output nothing.

I tried to install twitter bower on my Mac, and I used

    npm install bower -g

Then I tried `bower --help`, and the output was `bower command not found`. Why is that?

I have a *very* small repo in which I do all dev work in the master branch and use tags as &quot;stable&quot; points in history.

I guess by default Bower seems to fetch the latest **tagged** version of a repo. I&#39;m trying to get the most recent commit in the master branch.

I understand `npm` is more node specific.

So, when to use what?

`npm` still stands distant, but `bower` and `volo` seem to be solving exactly the same problem, although I am not able to draw a line between `npm` and `bower-volo`.

I ran &#39;yo angular&#39; and realized afterwards that it installs 1.0.8, I uninstalled the angular components, however the original bower.json file had angular-mocks and angular-scenario under &#39;devDependencies&#39; when I re-add all the 1.2.0-rc.2 components angular-mocks and angular-scenario under dependencies instead of devDependencies.

I&#39;m curious as to how devDependencies is used and if I should bother manually fixing it or leave as is.  Is there a way to specify on the bower CLI how to mark something as a dev dependency?

Can someone explain to me the difference between `NPM`, `Bower` and `Composer`.

They are all package managers - correct?

But when should each one be used?

Also, each one appears to have a json file that accompanies it, does this store all the packages you require so they can be installed by cmd line? Why do you need this file?

NPM/Bower/Composer - differences?

I am having huge problems trying to use bower (to install foundation 5) or get anything bower related to work on the command line.

 - ruby 1.9.3  
 - git (with run from command prompt option)
 - Nodejs

I&#39;ve successfully ran 

    npm install -g bower grunt-cli
    gem install foundation

and these have ran fine. I&#39;ve looked in the `npm/node_modules` directory and I can see `bower` folder in there.

Every time I type `bower` either into the `cmd`, `ruby cmd` or `git bash` I get

I&#39;ve set the git path in the environment variables.

What&#39;s annoying is the instruction on the bower site. It states:

    npm install -g bower

Visual Studio 2015 comes with built in support for tools like Grunt, Bower, Gulp and NPM for ASP.NET 5 projects.

However when I create a ASP.NET 4.5.2 project using Visual Studio 2015 it doesn&#39;t use these tools. I&#39;d like to use bower instead of nuget to manage client side packages.

I can find information about using these tools with Visual Studio 2013 (see [this][1] question for example). But I guess the procedure is different for Visual Studio 2015 since it has built in support for these tools.

Using Grunt, Bower, Gulp, NPM with Visual Studio 2015 for a ASP.NET 4.5 Project

I am using Bower to install several libraries. For demonstration purposes here, I am installing bootstrap. Regardless of the package, I receive the following errors:

I have tried using the following solution to remove the first error - which I found from this [search][1]:
    
    git config --global url.&quot;https://&quot;.insteadOf git://

However, this does not work nor do any of the other solutions found on that page. Searching for a solution for the 2nd error, it seems that setting a username/pwd for a proxy server will resolve the issue if you are on a corporate network/behind a firewall. However, I am not using a proxy server as I am on my home pc/network (windows 7 x64).

Git / Bower Errors: Exit Code # 128 &amp; Failed connect

I am trying to install properly Twitter Bootstrap in my current ember-cli project.
I did install bootstrap with bower :

    bower install --save bootstrap
Now the library is downloded in */vendor/bootstrap/dist/(css|js|fonts)*
I tried what is mentioned here : http://ember-cli.com/#managing-dependencies
replacing path and css files names but I get errors regarding the *Brocfile.js* file. I think the brocfile format has changed too much compared to the example.

I also tried to @import  with the */app/styles/app.css* file after moving the stylesheets in the /app/styles/ directory :

    @import url(&#39;/assets/bootstrap.css&#39;);
    @import url(&#39;/assets/bootstrap-theme.css&#39;);
But it did not work. The files are visible true dev server : `http://localhost:4200/assets/bootstrap.css`

Can someone throw me a bone here ?

Recommended way to include bootstrap library in Ember.JS ember-cli App

I&#39;m trying to use Bower for a web app, but find myself hitting some sort of proxy issues:

Relevant points:
 
 - I can browse to https://bower.herokuapp.com/packages/search/jquery and it returns a full json response.
 - I can use git to clone, both using the git:// protocol and http(s).
 - I can use NPM directly without these issues
 - I&#39;ve tried using Fiddler to determine what&#39;s being blocked, but it doesn&#39;t detect any calls from the Bower command.  I can see calls from NPM commands in Fiddler.
 - I&#39;ve searched the Bower issues list, seen similar issues, but they either have no solution or it doesn&#39;t seem quite the same as mine.

Any ideas?

Sometimes it&#39;s useful to rebuild an entire site and force bower to reinstall new versions of all the packages in bower.json.

However, there doesn&#39;t seem to be any way of doing that:

### Attempt #1:

    $ bower uninstall
    bower not-installed 0

Nope, that only works on a package-by-package basis, even though a clean &#39;bower install&#39; uses bower.json. 

### Attempt #2:

    $ bower install -f -l 0
    $

Nope, despite &#39;-f&#39;, this does absolutely nothing if the dependencies are met.

### Attempt #3:

    $ rm -r bower_components
    $

! Ah victory! ... wait, what&#39;s this?

    rm: bower_components: No such file or directory

Oh darn, there&#39;s a .bowrc in this project that sets the directory to install things to.

### My current terrible solution:

Run custom script that:

    - Parse .bowerrc if one exists
    - Load the directory if one is specified in the json block
    - If the directory currently exists...
    - ...recursively delete the directory.

It works, I suppose, but it&#39;s pretty annoying to have to setup repeatedly.

Am I missing something?

Is there not just a simple bower command to delete the local installed modules?

Seems like really basic functionality I would expect bower uninstall to do.

(This isn&#39;t really a very javascript question, but I&#39;ll happily accept something that hooks into the bower module somehow to make this happen in a simple node script)

Edit: If you want &#39;motivation&#39; for such a task, it&#39;s this: We have a jenkins server that builds our projects and runs tests. However, periodically it fails for no obvious reason; investigating, it&#39;s almost *always* because jenkins is using a previous copy of the repository with just a git-pull to update to the most recent version before building and running tests; as a result, the previous bower_components directory is there, and it is full of cached copies of the various components.

Here a few example of things which are #@$@#$&#39;d and require bower to be run again as a forced install:

1) Some idiot (&gt;_&gt; fitvids) deletes the previous tagged release of a project.

2) Some project has dropped off of bower / moved its github page

3) Some project (&gt;_&gt; jquery) has changed the way the files are laid out in a non-major version revision.

I realize that the &#39;correct&#39; solution to this problem is: fix jenkins so it creates a new temporary directory for each build. ...but that&#39;s not in my control.

So, as a build step, I need to automate a way to delete the bower components and force them to all be reinstalled; either as a grunt task (part of the build) or a jenkins build step. However, remember from (3) above, that our projects use .bowerrc, so it&#39;s not as simple as simply deleting a folder.

It would be great if I could uninstall all the existing bower components as a pre-build step to make this work.

So... back to the question: Can this be done with bower?

How do you uninstall all your bower packages?

I have a project that depends on both:

- jquery ~1.9.1
- another project which in turn depends on jquery &gt;=1.7.2

But when I run `bower install`, it ends up installing jquery 2.0.2.
This seems broken.

How do I either (a) make it correctly solve the constraints or (b) explicitly force a final version to be installed (workaround)?

Node JS and NPM were working well before. Recently I have re-installed the Node JS, NPM and the problem started. After I install a module like an example `npm install -g bower`, the module gets installed successfully but `bower -v` gives

I have checked the installation path 
`C:\Users\XXXXX\AppData\Roaming\npm\node_modules` has all the old installed modules. I have tried to uninstall them and reinstall the modules, but still, I am getting the same error.

I don&#39;t know why I am getting this error after reinstalling NodeJS NPM.

I know that adding `--allow-root` works since I tested directly from bash but it apparently isn&#39;t allowed from the bundle command line. Now, is the only way to run bower as `root` to add `--allow-root` or does it exist another way ?

I am trying to use bower to pull down a git repository when I run a `bower install`.  Is there any way of listing a git repository as a dependency?  I can&#39;t find any info in the documentation, but maybe I am looking in the wrong place.

Cannot find module &#39;internal/fs&#39; after upgrading to node 7

I was using the `react-native` package which I installed globally with `npm`. Now it says at the first line after executing the `init` command. The following:

    Installing react-native from npm...
    Consider installing yarn to make this faster: https://yarnpkg.com

So I was checking that website and it looked interesting to me, but I don&#39;t exactly know what it would be. At first, I thought that I would need `brew` to install `yarn`, so I could yarn to install `npm`. But now I think that `yarn` is a replacement of `npm`. Is that a correct statement?

Why would I like to have so many package managers?

I understand that it&#39;s useful for software like [Atom][1] or [Visual Studio Code][2] to have their own package manager. But for development, I do not see the reason why someone would like to use four different package managers (brew for &#39;primary software&#39;, `yarn` for `npm` packages, npm for backend modules and bower for front-end libraries). How can  this package manager forest be untangled?

What is the difference between brew, yarn, and npm?

I am starting out angular app with [angular-fullstack][1] in my Windows 7 box. I installed bunch of npm packages with -g options, including grunt-bower-install. I created the application first by running

There were no exception during the application creation. After application was created successfully I tried to run the app using

expecting the server to run. But the &#39;grunt serve&#39; failed with

&gt; We tried looking for a `.bowerrc` file, but couldn&#39;t find a custom
`directory` property defined. We then tried `bower_components`, but

I did find .bowerrc file and it was pointing to app/bower_components. Unfortunately, bower_components file was no where to be found. I am not sure what should be the content of the file to create it myself. Is it the missing file causing this problem or is there a npm package, I did not install correctly?

I&#39;ve just installed `git` and setup permissions/SSH authentication with public/private key (Centos 6.5). I&#39;m able to pull/push without problems using i.e.:

    git clone git@code.organization.com:projects/boilerplate-template

Username is `git`, code placed in `/home/git/projects`, repository created with `git --init --shared boilerplate-template`.

How can I require `boilerplate-template` with Bower in another project?

How to install a bower package using a private git server (SSH)?

I&#39;m trying to set up an automated package build for an app which uses bower.  When it gets to bower install in the postinstall, bower prompts:

What does &#39;invalid&#39; mean when using npm list?

I have set up my Angular app so when it&#39;s pushed to Heroku it runs `bower install`. However I&#39;m getting errors due to version issues.

When I run `bower install` locally I get presented with this:

Unable to find a suitable version for angular - bower install

`bower install` behind a proxy fails in timeout with the following settings (some set are useless...) :
