I have a portion of my view that is rendered via RenderAction calling a child action. How can I get the Parent controller and Action from inside this Child Action.

When I use..

    @ViewContext.RouteData.Values[&quot;action&quot;]

I get back the name of the Child Action but what I need is the Parent/Calling action.

How to get current controller and action from inside Child action?

I&#39;ve translated my mvc website, which is working great. If I select another language (Dutch or English) the content gets translated.
This works because I set the culture in the session.

Now I want to show the selected culture(=culture) in the url.
If it is the default language it should not be showed in the url, only if it is not the default language it should show it in the url.

e.g.:

For default culture (dutch):

    site.com/foo
    site.com/foo/bar
    site.com/foo/bar/5

For non-default culture (english):

    site.com/en/foo
    site.com/en/foo/bar
    site.com/en/foo/bar/5

**My problem** is that I always see this:

site.com/**nl**/foo/bar/5
even if I clicked on English (see _Layout.cs). My content is translated in English but the route parameter in the url stays on &quot;nl&quot; instead of &quot;en&quot;. 

How can I solve this or what am I doing wrong?

I tried in the global.asax to set the RouteData but doesn&#39;t help.

I&#39;m trying to navigate to a page which its URL is in the following format:

I&#39;ve added a new route in the `RouteConfig.cs` file and so my `RouteConfig.cs` looks like this:

Is it possible to have an ASP.NET MVC route that uses subdomain information to determine its route?  For example:

  - ***user1**.domain.com* goes to one place
  - ***user2**.domain.com* goes to another?

Or, can I make it so both of these go to the same controller/action with a `username` parameter?

I have two action methods that are conflicting.  Basically, I want to be able to get to the same view using two different routes, either by an item&#39;s ID or by the item&#39;s name and its parent&#39;s (items can have the same name across different parents).  A search term can be used to filter the list.

For example...
    
    Items/{action}/ParentName/ItemName
    Items/{action}/1234-4321-1234-4321

Here are my action methods (there are also `Remove` action methods)...

I&#39;ve thought about extending `Method #1`&#39;s signature to include the search parameters and moving the logic in `Method #2` out to a private method they would both call, but I don&#39;t believe that will actually resolve the ambiguity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ASP.NET MVC ambiguous action methods

I am trying to make a custom HTTP 404 error page when someone types in a URL
that doesn&#39;t invoke a valid action or controller in ASP.NET MVC, instead of it displaying the generic &quot;Resource Not Found&quot; ASP.NET error.

I don&#39;t want to use the web.config to handle this.

Is there any kind of routing magic I can do to catch any invalid URLs?

**Update:** I tried the answer given, however I still get the ugly &quot;Resource Not Found&quot; message.

**Another update:** Ok, apparently something changed in RC1. I&#39;ve even tried specifically trapping 404 on an `HttpException` and it still just gives me the &quot;Resource Not Found&quot; page.

I&#39;ve even used MvcContrib&#39;s resource&#39;s feature and nothing - same problem. Any ideas?

Routing for custom ASP.NET MVC 404 Error page

The URL I&#39;m trying to let work is one in the style of: http://somedomain.com/api/people/staff.33311 (just like sites as LAST.FM allow all sort of signs in their RESTFul &amp; WebPage urls, for example &quot;[http://www.last.fm/artist/psy&#39;aviah][1]&quot; is a valid url for LAST.FM).

What works are following scenarios:
- http://somedomain.com/api/people/ - which returns all people
- http://somedomain.com/api/people/staff33311 - would work as well, but it&#39;s not what I&#39;m after
I&#39;d want the url to accept a &quot;dot&quot;, like the example below
- http://somedomain.com/api/people/staff.33311 - but this gives me a 

    HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found

In asp.net MVC the &quot;homepage&quot; (ie the route that displays when hitting www.foo.com) is set to Home/Index .

- Where is this value stored? 
- How can I change the &quot;homepage&quot;? 
- Is there anything more elegant than using RedirectToRoute() in the Index action of the home controller?

I tried grepping for Home/Index in my project and couldn&#39;t find a reference, nor could I see anything in IIS (6). I looked at the default.aspx page in the root, but that didn&#39;t seem to do anything relevent.

According to the documentation, the routing system checks to see if a URL matches a disk file before evaluating the application&#39;s routes.

But when I request the file a `404` error arises. 

My file is located in ~/Views folder.
The URL is: `http://[localhost]/Views/HtmlPage1.html`

What have I missed?

Is there any way to force all areas to use the **_Layout** as a **base layout**?

Is there any way to do it without adding the **_ViewStart** file (for example, via the routing configuration)?

ASP.NET MVC - Extract parameter of an URL

    The view &#39;Index&#39; or its master was not found. The following locations were searched:

I got this error when using ASP.Net mvc area. The area controller action are invoked, but it seems to look for the view in the &#39;base&#39; project views instead of in the area views folder.



The view &#39;Index&#39; or its master was not found.

I have an ApiController and I want to use email addresses as the ID parameter for requests:

However, I cannot get this to work (returns **404**):

Due to a lack of other options, I&#39;ve headed in the direction Maggie suggested and used the answer from [this question][2] to create a rewrite rule to automatically append a trailing slash when I need an email in the URL.

My Map is:

Is there any easy way to work with parameters that contain slashes? Other escaped values (space `%20`) seem to work.

To encode Base64 works for me. It makes the URL ugly, but that&#39;s OK for now.

EDIT1:

At the end it turned out that the best way was to save a nicely formated string for each item I need to select. Thats much better because now I only encode values and never decode them. All special characters become &quot;-&quot;. A lot of my db-tables now have this additional column &quot;URL&quot;. The data is pretty stable, thats why I can go this way. I can even check, if the data in &quot;URL&quot; is unique.
