What is the difference between Java&#39;s `compare()` and `compareTo()` methods? Do those methods give same answer?

What is the difference between compare() and compareTo()?

We are using Maven for a large build process (&gt; 100 modules). We have been storing our external dependencies in source control, and using that to update a local repo.

However, we are ready to graduate to a local repo that can cache central so that we don&#39;t have to proactively download all 3rd parties (but we can still have a local repo to pull from). In addition we want to publish our internal build artifacts from a nightly build so that developers don&#39;t have to build the world.

We are considering Nexus and Artifactory. What are the reasons for preferring one over the other? Are there others we should be considering?

I am using an instance of `ManualResetEvent` to control thread access to a resource but I&#39;m running into problems with it.  Does anyone know how I can find out during debugging what the state of the object is?

That is to say I would like to know if the `ManualResetEvent` is currently blocking any threads and maybe even how many and which threads it is blocking.

How to find what state ManualResetEvent is in?

Is there a good, free telnet library available for C# (not ASP .NET)? I have found a few on google, but they all have one issue or another (don&#39;t support login/password, don&#39;t support a scripted mode).

I am assuming that MS still has not included a telnet library as part of .NET v3.5 as I couldn&#39;t find it if it was. I would loooooove to be wrong though.

I&#39;m not comparing `ArrayList` vs `List&lt;&gt;`, but `ArrayList` vs `List&lt;object&gt;`, as both will be exposing elements of type `object`. What would be the benefit of using either one in this case?

EDIT: It&#39;s no concern for type safety here, since both class is exposing `object` as its item. One still needs to cast from `object` to the desired type. I&#39;m more interested in anything other than type safety.

What is the recommended location to save user preference files? Is there a recommended method for dealing with user preferences?

Currently I use the path returned from `typeof(MyLibrary).Assembly.Location` as a default location to store files generated or required by the application.

This is just a note for people like me who had never used settings before.
Settings are pretty useful, but I had to do a whole bunch of digging to figure out what was going on (coming from the Python world, not something I am used too). Things got complicated as I wanted to save dictionaries and apparently they can&#39;t be serialized. Settings also seem to get stored in 3 different files depending on what you do. There is an `app.config`, `user.config` and a `settings.setting` file. So here are two more links that I found useful:

WPF/C#: Where should I be saving user preferences files?

I have a WPF listbox which displays messages. It contains an avatar on the left side and the username and message stacked vertically to the right of the avatar. The layout is fine until the message text should word wrap, but instead I get a horizontal scroll bar on the listbox.

I have a C# (2008/.NET 3.5) class library assembly that supports WPF (based on [this article](http://dotupdate.wordpress.com/2007/12/05/how-to-add-a-wpf-control-library-template-to-visual-c-express-2008/)).&lt;br/&gt; I&#39;ve created several windows, and am now attempting to create a common style set for them. However, as it&#39;s a class library (instead of a WPF app), I don&#39;t have an app.xaml (and its contained Application &amp; corresponding Application.Resources) in which to store these styles for global access.

**So:** How can I create a top-level set of style definitions that&#39;ll be seen by all xaml files in the assembly, *given that I do not have app.xaml (see above)*? And/or is it possible to *add* a working app.xaml to a class library?

FYI, I did try creating a ResourceDictionary in a ResourceDictionary.xaml file, and include it in each window within a &quot;Window.Resources&quot; block. That turned out to solve the styling of Buttons, etc... but not for the enclosing Window. I can put `Style=&quot;{StaticResource MyWindowStyle}&quot;` in the Window&#39;s opening block, and it compiles and shows up in the VS Design window fine, but during actual runtime I get a parse exception (MyWindowStyle could not be found; I&#39;m guessing Visual Studio sees the dictionary included after the line in question, but the CRL does things more sequentially and therefore hasn&#39;t loaded the ResourceDictionary yet).

Although the VS Design window doesn&#39;t show the window using the MyWindow style (ie black background), it compiles fine and starts up. However, when the app containing this class library makes a call that causes this window to display, I get a XamlParseException:

 &gt;Cannot find resource named &#39;{MyWindow}&#39;.

I also tried leaving out the Style parameter, to see if the window would use the style by default (and I tried that both with the x:Key in generic.xaml included and without). No errors, but anything defined in the generic.xaml didn&#39;t show up either.

Am I doing something wrong here, or any other ideas on how one might allow for common custom styles to be used on a Window (ie, not have to define the styles in each Window&#39;s xaml) -- with the caveat that this is NOT an application?

How is it possible to programmatically select an item in a WPF `TreeView`?  The `ItemsControl` model seems to prevent it.

I do not want the user to be able to change the value displayed in the combobox. I have been using `Enabled = false` but it grays out the text, so it is not very readable. I want it to behave like a textbox with `ReadOnly = true`, where the text is displayed normally, but the user can&#39;t edit it.

The application has a main form which hosts many child forms (one at a time). When a user hits &lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;+&lt;kbd&gt;F&lt;/kbd&gt;, I&#39;d like to show a custom search form. The search form would depend on the current open child form in the application.

I was thinking of using something like this in the *ChildForm_KeyDown* event:

But this doesn&#39;t work. The event doesn&#39;t even fire when you press a key. What is the solution?

How can I disable a tab inside a TabControl?

I hope I can explain this clearly enough. I have my main form (A) and it opens 1 child form (B) using form.Show() and a second child form (C) using form.Show(). Now I want child form B to open a form (D) using form.ShowDialog(). When I do this, it blocks form A and form C as well. Is there a way to open a modal dialog and only have it block the form that opened it?

Is it possible to use ShowDialog without blocking all forms?

Note that a single call to ActiveControl is not enough when hierarchies are used. Imagine:

    Form
        TableLayoutPanel
            FlowLayoutPanel
                TextBox (focused)

(formInstance).ActiveControl will return reference to TableLayoutPanel, not the TextBox (because ActiveControl seems to only be returning immediate active child in the control tree, while I&#39;m looking for the leaf control).
