There might be a semicolon or bracket missing a line before your pasted line.

It seems fine to me; every string is allowed as an array index.



It could be some other line as well. PHP is not always that exact.

Probably you are just missing a semicolon on previous line.

**How to reproduce this error, put this in a file called `a.php`:**

**Explanation:**

The PHP parser converts your program to a series of tokens.  A `T_VARIABLE` is a Token of type VARIABLE.  When the parser processes tokens, it tries to make sense of them, and throws errors if it receives a variable where none is allowed.

In the simple case above with variable `$b`, the parser tried to process this:

    $a = 5 $b = 7;

The PHP parser looks at the $b after the 5 and says &quot;that is unexpected&quot;.





In my case it was an issue of the PHP version.

The .phar file I was using was not compatible with PHP 5.3.9. Switching interpreter to PHP 7 did fix it.

Performance of static methods vs. functions

Now that I&#39;m starting to get back into PHP, I&#39;m starting to remember why I gave it up in the first place. The most annoying thing on my plate at the moment is what I&#39;ve come to term &quot;PHP&#39;s white screen of death&quot;. When PHP gets a fatal error due to syntax or whatever, it seems like it will always die without actually sending anything to the browser. I&#39;ve added the following to my `.htaccess`, and it seems to work most of the time, but it doesn&#39;t work in these cases.

    php_value display_errors 1
    php_value display_startup_errors 1
    php_value error_reporting 2147483647 # E_ALL

Am I missing something? At the moment I feel like I need to hit refresh every few lines of code I write, lest I make a mistake and have to search through many pages trying to track down that one little mistake I made...

**EDIT:** For example, given the two lines of code below:

JavaScript error (Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected end of input)

I&#39;m trying to compile the NIST Biometric Image Software, and I have been having trouble all day. I finally got the source checked out right, and I installed cygwin with no problems (I have used it in the past), but when I went to compile, I get this error:

     $  sh setup.sh &lt;/cygdrive/c/NBIS&gt; [--without-X11]
     setup.sh: line 94: syntax error near unexpected token `$&#39;in\r&#39;&#39;

Now I&#39;m sure any advanced coder would head to the setup.sh and look for problems, but I&#39;m not really much of a coder (I&#39;m only compiling this because there are no pre-compiled packages) so I don&#39;t know what to do. I didn&#39;t install any libraries with cygwin, I just left everything default. I&#39;m trying to follow the NBIS manual, but I don&#39;t really understand it that well and so I&#39;m struggling badly.
