In [.NET][1] implementation, the XmlSerializer generates a temporary assembly for serializing/deserializing your classes (for performance reasons). It can either be generated on the fly (but it takes time on every execution), or it can be pregenerated during compilation and saved in this assembly you are asking about. 

You can change this behaviour in project options (tab *Compile* -&gt; *Advanced Compile Options* -&gt; *Generate serialization assemblies*, *Auto* or *On*, respectively). The corresponding element in the project file is *GenerateSerializationAssemblies*, for example, `&lt;GenerateSerializationAssemblies&gt;Auto&lt;/GenerateSerializationAssemblies&gt;`.

FYI. The exact steps to stop the XmlSerializers.dll from being auto-generated are:

 1. In VS, right-click your project file and select &quot;Properties&quot;
 2. Click the &quot;Build&quot; tab
 3. Change the &quot;Generate serialization assembly&quot; dropdown from &quot;Auto&quot; to &quot;Off&quot;
 4. Rebuild and it will be gone


I think this is the JIT (Just in time) compilation of XML serialisers for performance reasons.

You get the same thing with RegEx instances using the RegexOptions.Compiled option turned on.

I&#39;m no .NET CLR expert, sorry for lack of precise technical detail.

`*.XmlSerializers.dll` are generated using the Sgen.exe [XML Serializer Generator Tool]

Typically the `Sgen.exe` is used in Post Build events of Projects. See if your project has a post build event which generates the `*.XmlSerializers.dll`

The project only generates the project.XMLSerialisers.dll for web applications. For other applications you have to run sgen separately.

I have a WCF service that needs to return a string of XML.  But it seems like the writer only wants to build up a file, not a string.  I tried:

    string nextXMLstring = &quot;&quot;;
    using (XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create(nextXMLstring))

This generates an error saying nextXMLstring doesnt have a file path.  It wants something like:

    using (XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create(&quot;nextXMLstring.xml&quot;))

How can I build up my XML and then return it as a string??

XmlWriter to Write to a String Instead of to a File

In the following code I set up a change handler on a select box to show and hide some follow up questions based on the value of the selection.

Further, for some values of the selection there is an extra message that is displayed.

In order to check to see if I need to hide the extra message, I keep a variable called Previous.  Upon execution of the handler I check to see if Previous is null or if the size is 0.

It would be nice to initialize Previous to an empty JQuery object so as not to have to do the extra check for null.

Doing a $() returns an object with the size of 1.

Is there a way to create an empty Jquery object?

I use the java IDE IntelliJ IDEA and one of the features I like is that there&#39;s no saving.  Everything&#39;s always saved and you just use history navigation.  I tend to have both editors open and I&#39;m always forgetting to save in VS.

I&#39;m running vs 2008 with resharper 4.5 but as far as I can tell this isn&#39;t achievable or configurable.
Any suggestions?

Even if I create a clean WinForms project, Edit and Continue doesn&#39;t work and gives me the error:

1. Edit and Continue option is checked in Tools → Options → Debugging.  
2. Optimization is not enabled.  
3. Seems like there is no any managed profiler set up.  
4. I am running in Debug mode   
5. I am running on x64 CPU and Windows XP 32-bit, but setting platform target to x86 rather than AnyCpu doesn&#39;t help.  
6. Repairing Visual Studio installation doesn&#39;t help.

I have a VS2008 I want to copy certain files from a directory into my `/bin/` folder.  I have set the files (located in `/common/browserhawk/`) to &quot;Copy to Output Directory&quot;.  However, it copies the folder structure as well:  the files are copied to `/bin/common/browserhawk/`

How do I get these files to copy to just `/bin/`?  I do not want to store these in the root of the website to get them to copy correctly.

XmlSerializer giving FileNotFoundException at constructor

I&#39;d like to check if an object is a number so that `.ToString()` would result in a string containing digits and `+`,`-`,`.`

Is it possible by simple type checking in .net (like: `if (p is Number)`)?

Or Should I convert to string, then try parsing to double?


**Update:** To clarify my object is int, uint, float, double, and so on it isn&#39;t a string.
I&#39;m trying to make a function that would serialize any object to xml like this:
    
    &lt;string&gt;content&lt;/string&gt;

or

    &lt;numeric&gt;123.3&lt;/numeric&gt;

or raise an exception.

I spent a good portion of time last week working on serialization. During that time I found many examples utilizing either the BinaryFormatter or XmlSerializer. Unfortunately, what I did not find were any examples comprehensively detailing the differences between the two.

The genesis of my curiosity lies in why the BinaryFormatter is able to deserialize directly to an interface whilst the XmlSerializer is not.
