Using LIKE:

    SELECT *
      FROM TABLE
     WHERE column LIKE &#39;%cats%&#39;  --case-insensitive

While `LIKE` is suitable for this case, a more general purpose solution is to use [`instr`](http://www.sqlite.org/lang_corefunc.html#instr), which doesn&#39;t require characters in the search string to be escaped. Note: [`instr` is available starting from Sqlite 3.7.15](http://www.sqlite.org/changes.html#version_3_7_15).

	SELECT *
	  FROM TABLE  
	 WHERE instr(column, &#39;cats&#39;) &gt; 0;

Also, keep in mind that `LIKE` is case-*insensitive*, whereas `instr` is case-*sensitive*.

hello I am trying what I thought would be a rather easy regex in Javascript but is giving me lots of trouble. 
I want the ability to split a date via javascript splitting either by a &#39;-&#39;,&#39;.&#39;,&#39;/&#39; and &#39; &#39;.

I am trying to do a SELECT UNIQUE with LINQ, i.e. I want

    Red
    Brown
    Yellow
    Green
    Orange

    var uniqueColors = from dbo in database.MainTable
                       where dbo.Property == true
                       select dbo.Color.Name;

I then changed this to

    var uniqueColors = from dbo in database.MainTable
                       where dbo.Property == true
                       select dbo.Color.Name.Distinct();

with no success. The first `select` gets ALL the colors, so how do I modify it to only get the unique values?

If there is a better way of structuring this query, more than happy to go that route.

How do I go about editing it so I can have `.OrderBy( &quot;column name&quot; )` i.e. alphabetically by color name, so name property?

I need to parse a fairly large XML file (varying between about a hundred kilobytes and several hundred kilobytes), which I&#39;m doing using `Xml#parse(String, ContentHandler)`. I&#39;m currently testing this with a 152KB file.

During parsing, I also insert the data in an SQLite database using calls similar to the following: `getWritableDatabase().insert(TABLE_NAME, &quot;_id&quot;, values)`. All of this together takes about 80 seconds for the 152KB test file (which comes down to inserting roughly 200 rows).

When I comment out all insert statements (but leave in everything else, such as creating `ContentValues` etc.) the same file takes only 23 seconds.

Is it normal for the database operations to have such a big overhead? Can I do anything about that?

I am trying to execute a SQlite replace function, but use another field in the function.

    select  locationname + &#39;&lt;p&gt;&#39; from location;

In this snip, the result is a list of 0s. I would have expected   a string with the text from locationname and the `&#39;&lt;p&gt;&#39;` literals.



String concatenation does not work in SQLite

We&#39;ve recently had the need to add columns to a few of our existing SQLite database tables.  This can be done with [`ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN`][1].  Of course, if the table has already been altered, we want to leave it alone.  Unfortunately, SQLite doesn&#39;t support an `IF NOT EXISTS` clause on `ALTER TABLE`.

Our current workaround is to execute the ALTER TABLE statement and ignore any &quot;duplicate column name&quot; errors, just like [this Python example][2] (but in C++).

However, our usual approach to setting up database schemas is to have a .sql script containing `CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS` and `CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS` statements, which can be executed using `sqlite3_exec` or the `sqlite3` command-line tool.  We can&#39;t put `ALTER TABLE` in these script files because if that statement fails, anything after it won&#39;t be executed.

I want to have the table definitions in one place and not split between .sql and .cpp files.  Is there a way to write a workaround to `ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS` in pure SQLite SQL?

I have a table defined as follows:

What I want to do is add a record with a unique Name. If the Name already exists, I want to modify the fields.
