Turns out I misunderstood the format I needed to use when entering arguments.

To add the record `foo.bar.website.net`, I was setting the `name` field to `foo`. I actually needed to set it to `foo.bar.website.net` - I was caught off guard because in the AWS Route 53 console one simply needs to type the leading material.

My python script needs to read files from a directory passed on the command line. I have defined a readable_dir type as below to be used with argparse for validating that the  directory passed on the command line is existent and readable.
Additionally, a default value (/tmp/non_existent_dir in the example below) has also been specified for the directory argument.
The problem here is that argparse invokes readable_dir() on the default value even in a situation where a directory argument is explicitly passed in on the command line. This causes the script to crap out as the default path /tmp/non_existent_dir does not exist in a context where a directory is explicitly passed in on the command line.
I could get around this by not specifying a default value and making this argument mandatory, or by deferring the validation until later in the script but is a more elegant solution that anyone is aware of?

I am using the [route53](https://github.com/heavywater/chef-route53) cookbook in Opscode Chef to add a newly created VPC node to Route 53. 

When I try to create a record named `foo` for the hosted zone `bar.website.net`, I get the error `RRSet with DNS name foo. is not permitted in zone bar`.

I am pretty sure that this is an AWS configuration issue, not an issue with the cookbook, but I could easily be wrong about that. What&#39;s the fix for an issue like this?

I&#39;m having problem connecting EBS volume to my Ubuntu EC2 Instance.

Here&#39;s what I did:

1. From the Amazon AWS Console, I created a EBS 150GB volume and attached it to an Ubuntu 11.10 EC2 instance. Under the EBS volume properties, &quot;Attachment&quot; shows: &quot;[my Ubuntu instance id]:/dev/sdf (attached)&quot;

2. Tried mounting the drive on the Ubuntu box, and it told me &quot;mount: /dev/sdf is not a block device&quot;

  `sudo mount /dev/sdf /vol`

3. So I checked with fdisk and tried to mount from the new location and it told me it wasn&#39;t the right file system.

  `sudo fdisk -l`

  `sudo mount -v -t ext4 /dev/xvdf /vol`

 the error:
&gt; mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/xvdf, missing
&gt; codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info
&gt; is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so

  &quot;dmesg | tail&quot; told me it gave the following error:

I also tried putting the configurations into /etc/fstab file as instructed on http://www.webmastersessions.com/how-to-attach-ebs-volume-to-amazon-ec2-instance, but still gave same not the right file system error.


Questions:

Q1: Based on point 1 (above), why was the volume mapped to &#39;dev/sdf&#39; when it&#39;s really mapped to &#39;/dev/xvdf&#39;?

Q2: What else do I need to do to get the EBS volume loaded? I thought it&#39;ll just take care of everything for me when I attach it to a instance.

I&#39;m attempting to copy my mysql database from an Amazon EC2 to an RDS:

I successfully did a `mysqldump` of my database into my root folder using this:

    root@ip-xx-xx-xx-xx:~# mysqldump my_database -u my_username -p &gt; my_database.sql

Then I tried to transfer this .sql file to my new RDS database:

    root@ip-xx-xx-xx-xx:~# mysql my_database -u my_username -p -h  
    my_new_database.xxxxxxxxx.us-east-1.rds.amazonaws.com &lt; my_database.sql

Unfortunately, I get following error message:

    You do not have the SUPER privilege and binary logging is enabled 
    (you *might* want to use  the less safe log_bin_trust_function_creators variable)

I tried to `GRANT SUPER..` in a variety of ways but I&#39;m getting errors when I try to do that too. Typing `mysql &gt; FLUSH privileges;` doesn&#39;t work either. 

I&#39;m a mysql beginner so sorry for such an easy question. Thoughts?

Currently I have a single server in amazon where I put all my cronjobs.  I want to eliminate this single point of failure, and expose all my tasks as web services.  I&#39;d like to expose the services behind a VPC ELB to a few servers that will run the tasks when called.

Is there some service that Amazon (AWS) offers that can run a reoccurring job (really call a webservice) at scheduled intervals?  I&#39;d really like to be able to keep the cron functionality in terms of time/day specification, but farm out the HA of the driver (thing that calls endpoints at the right time) to AWS.

I like how SQS offers web endpoint(s), but from what I can tell you cant schedule them.  SWF doesn&#39;t seem to be a good fit either.

We&#39;re planning to use AMI EC2 instances which are not &quot;pre-baked&quot;. I.e. when they are spun up, they are bare installs of AWS linux. Our bootstrap process will pull in the various installs that we need e.g. python, tomcat. We&#39;ll have min of 3 instances and max of 8. 

Given these requirements, would using Puppet/Chef be useful rather than using Amazon Cloud Formation (CloudInit)? 

Best I can see is if we used Puppet, then we&#39;d have declarative programming which is easier to audit to see what&#39;s happening versus a script. Also CloudInit has a 16k script size limit which we may or may not run into. 

Has anyone moved from CloudInit to Puppet or Chef for a specific reason that they can provide here in answer to my question?

Under certain conditions, I need to abort/end a Chef run with a non-zero status code, that will then propagate back through our deployment chain and eventually to Jenkins resulting in a big, fat red ball.

Trying to figure out the best approach for a large project. When is it appropriate to add recipes within a recipe by using `include_recipe` as opposed to adding the recipe to the `run_list`? Is there a good rule of thumb?

I haven&#39;t yet come across a Chef resource that will copy/move files locally. For example, I want to download [jetty hightide][1] and unzip it. Once done, copy all the files into a particular folder, like this:

    # mv /var/tmp/jetty-hightide-7.4.5.v20110725/* /opt/jetty/

BTW, jettyhightide when unzipped, gives you a folder and inside that folder rest of the files are located.  Hence `unzip jetty-hightide-7.4.5.v20110725.zip -d /opt/jetty/` is useless because it will create a directory `/opt/jetty/jetty-hightide-7.4.5.v20110725/*` whereas what I really want is `/opt/jetty/*`. Hence I am looking for a local copy/move resource in Chef.
