I&#39;m at a point in my development learning where I feel like I must learn more about interfaces.

I frequently read about them but it just seems like I cannot grasp them.

I&#39;ve read examples like: Animal base class, with IAnimal interface for things like &#39;Walk&#39;, &#39;Run&#39;, &#39;GetLegs&#39;, etc - but I&#39;ve never been working on something and felt like &quot;Hey I should use an interface here!&quot;

What am I missing? Why is it such a hard concept for me to grasp! I am just intimidated by the fact that I might not ever realize a concrete need for one - mostly due to some missing aspect of understanding them! It makes me feel like I&#39;m missing something up top in terms of being a developer! If anyone has had an experience like this and had a breakthrough I would appreciate some tips on how to understand this concept. Thank you.


How will I know when to create an interface?

Does anyone know how to programmaticly find out where the java classloader actually loads the class from?  

I often work on large projects where the classpath gets very long and manual searching is not really an option.  I recently had a [problem][1] where the classloader was loading an incorrect version of a class because it was on the classpath in two different places.

So how can I get the classloader to tell me where on disk the actual class file is coming from?

***Edit:*** What about if the classloader actually fails to load the class due to a version mismatch (or something else),  is there anyway we could find out what file its trying to read before it reads it?

Is there a way in Git to rollback to a much earlier version of a file? I can roll back to the previous version with REVERT, but what if I want to go back to earlier versions?

I want to know how to simply publish over http = much like [Mercurial][1]&#39;s hg serve! On the Windows/work box do this:

    git serve 

and then on the Linux box SIMPLY go:

    git clone http://project project 

finished.

Tracking a single remote branch as a local branch is straightforward enough. 

    $ git checkout --track -b ${branch_name} origin/${branch_name}

Pushing all local branches up to the remote, creating new remote branches as needed is also easy.

    $ git push --all origin

I want to do the reverse. If I have X number of remote branches at a single source: 

    $ git branch -r 
    branch1
    branch2
    branch3
    .
    .
    .

Can I create local tracking branches for all those remote branches without needed to manually create each one? Say something like:

    $ git checkout --track -b --all origin

I&#39;ve googled and RTMs, but have come up bunk thus far.

I read through a bunch of questions asking about simple source code control tools and Git seemed like a reasonable choice. I have it up and running, and it works well so far. One aspect that I like about CVS is the automatic incrementation of a version number.

I understand that this makes less sense in a distributed repository, but as a developer, I want/need something like this.  Let me explain why:

I use Emacs. Periodically I go through and look for new versions of the Lisp source files for third-party packages. Say I&#39;ve got a file, foo.el, which, according to the header, is version 1.3; if I look up the latest version and see it&#39;s 1.143 or 2.6 or whatever, I know I&#39;m pretty far behind.

If instead I see a couple of 40-character hashes, I won&#39;t know which is later or get any idea of how much later it is. I would absolutely hate it if I had to manually check ChangeLogs just to get an idea of how out of date I am.

As a developer, I want to extend this courtesy, as I see it, to the people that use my output (and maybe I&#39;m kidding myself that anyone is, but let&#39;s leave that aside for a moment). I don&#39;t want to have to remember to increment the damn number myself every time, or a timestamp or something like that. That&#39;s a real PITA, and I know that from experience.

So what alternatives do I have? If I can&#39;t get an $Id:$ equivalent, how else can I provide what I&#39;m looking for?

I should mention that my expectation is that the end user will NOT have Git installed and even if they do, will not have a local repository (indeed, I expect not to make it available that way). 


Moving from CVS to Git: $Id$ equivalent?

I have a repository which I have *already* cloned from Subversion.  I&#39;ve been doing some work in this repository in its Git form and I would hate to lose that structure by cloning again.

However, when I originally cloned the repository, I failed to correctly specify the `svn.authors` property (or a semantically-similar option).

Is there any way I can specify the SVN author mappings now that the repository is fully Git-ified?

Preferably, I would like to correct all of the old commit authors to represent the Git author rather than the raw SVN username.

I&#39;d like to use git to record all the changes to a file. 

Is there a way I can turn git &#39;commit&#39; on to automatically happen every time a file is updated - so there is a new commit for every change to a file?

Ideally I&#39;d like my users to not even know that git is running behind the scenes. A user could then potentially &quot;undo&quot; changes to a file - and this could be achieved by pulling a previous version out of git.
