If `someobject` has an attribute named `foostring` then
    
    def get_foo(someobject, foostring):
        return getattr(someobject,foostring)

or if you want to set an attribute to the supplied object then:

    def set_foo(someobject, foostring, value):
        return setattr(someobject,foostring, value)

You should use setattr and getattr:

I just would like to know how to implement class constructor in this language.

I ran into an error yesterday and, while it&#39;s easy to get around, I wanted to make sure that I&#39;m understanding C++ right.

I have a base class with a protected member:

    class Base
    {
      protected:
        int b;
      public:
        void DoSomething(const Base&amp; that)
        {
          b+=that.b;
        }
    };

This compiles and works just fine.  Now I extend Base but still want to use b:

    class Derived : public Base
    {
      protected:
        int d;
      public:
        void DoSomething(const Base&amp; that)
        {
          b+=that.b;
          d=0;
        }
    };

Note that in this case `DoSomething` is still taking a reference to a `Base`, not `Derived`.  I would expect that I can still have access to `that.b` inside of `Derived`, but I get a `cannot access protected member` error (MSVC 8.0 - haven&#39;t tried gcc yet).

Obviously, adding a public getter on `b` solved the problem, but I was wondering why I couldn&#39;t have access directly to `b`.  I though that when you use public inheritance the protected variables are still visible to the derived class.

This is a question about Python Mixins that might be useful in general. I&#39;m just using Django models as that is the use-case I&#39;m most familiar with.

Should a mixin inherit from the class it is designed to mix-in with or from &#39;object&#39;?

Examples by code, what is more correct or better, or better depending on what you want to achieve?

This

    class TaggingMixin(models.Model):
        tag = models.ForeignKey(Tag)

        class Meta:
            abstract = True

    class MyModel(models.Model, TaggingMixin):
        title = models.CharField(max_length=100)

Or this:

    class TaggingMixin(object):
        tag = models.ForeignKey(Tag)

        class Meta:
            abstract = True

    class MyModel(models.Model, TaggingMixin):
        title = models.CharField(max_length=100)

I think inheriting from object is the right way. But I&#39;m seeing examples of the first case all over the net...

I recently came across this syntax, I am unaware of the difference.

I can find lots of stuff showing me what a lambda function is, and how the syntax works and what not.  But other than the &quot;coolness factor&quot; (I can make a function in middle a call to another function, neat!) I haven&#39;t seen something that&#39;s overwelmingly compelling to say why I really need/want to use them.

It seems to be more of a stylistic or structual choice in most examples I&#39;ve seen.  And kinda breaks the &quot;Only one correct way to do something&quot; in python rule.  How does it make my programs, more correct, more reliable, faster, or easier to understand?  (Most coding standards I&#39;ve seen tend to tell you to avoid overly complex statements on a single line.  If it makes it easier to read break it up.)

Using jQuery (v1.4.3), accessing the individual bits of data using `$.data()` is simple if the keys are known in advance, but it is not obvious how one can do so with arbitrary sets of data.

I&#39;m looking for a &#39;simple&#39; jQuery solution if one exists, but would not mind a lower level approach otherwise. I had a go at trying to to parse `$(&#39;#prod&#39;).attributes` but my lack of javascript-fu is letting me down.

[customdata] does what I need. However, including a jQuery plugin just for a fraction of its functionality seemed like an overkill. 

Eyeballing the source helped me fix my own code (and improved my javascript-fu).

Here&#39;s the solution I came up with:

As demonstrated in the accepted answer, the solution is trivial with jQuery (&gt;=1.4.4). `$(&#39;#prod&#39;).data()` would return the required data dict.
