I&#39;ve been trying to get a grip on arrows since they&#39;re the basis of most [FRP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_reactive_programming) implementations.  I think I understand the basic idea - they&#39;re related to monads but store static information at each bind operator so you can walk through a chain of arrows and look at the static information without having to evaluate the whole arrow.

But I get lost at the point where we start discussing first, second, and swap.  What do 2-tuples have to do with arrows?  Tutorials present the tuple stuff as if it were an obvious next step, but I&#39;m not really seeing the connection.  

For that matter, what does the arrow syntax mean intuitively?

I selected API minimum level 1.5 for my android app and I&#39;m just about to integrate gestures in to it which came in 1.6. Is there a way in Eclipse to change the minimum level from 1.5 to 1.6 halfway through building an app?

What is the proper/preferred way to allocate memory in a C API?

I can see, at first, two options:

1) Let the caller do all the (outer) memory handling:

    myStruct *s = malloc(sizeof(s));
    myStruct_init(s);

    myStruct_foo(s);

    myStruct_destroy(s);
    free(s);

The `_init` and `_destroy` functions are necessary since some more memory may be allocated inside, and it must be handled somewhere.

This has the disadvantage of being longer, but also the malloc can be eliminated in some cases (e.g., it can be passed a stack-allocated struct:

    int bar() {
        myStruct s;
        myStruct_init(&amp;s);

        myStruct_foo(&amp;s);

        myStruct_destroy(&amp;s);
    }

Also, it&#39;s necessary for the caller to know the size of the struct.

2) Hide `malloc`s in `_init` and `free`s in `_destroy`.

Advantages: shorter code, since the functions are going to be called anyway. Completely opaque structures.

Disadvantages: Can&#39;t be passed a struct allocated in a different way.

    myStruct *s = myStruct_init();

    myStruct_foo(s);

    myStruct_destroy(foo);

I&#39;m currently leaning for the first case; then again, I don&#39;t know about C API design.

C API design: Who should allocate?

We going to develop a little API application in Sinatra. What are the authentication options available to secure the API calls?

My question is, instead of creating a method like this:

I can create a method like this, and it works fine:

	public &lt;T extends Shape&gt; void drawAll(List&lt;T&gt; shapes){

	        s.draw(this);
	    }
	}

Which way should I use? Is wildcard useful in this case?


Java: bounded wildcards or bounded type parameter?

Whenever I ask people about the difference between an API and a library, I get different opinions.  Some give [this kind][1] of definition, saying that an API is a spec and a library is an implementation...

Some will tell you [this type][2] of definition, that an API is a bunch of mapped out functions, and a Library is just the distribution in compiled form.

All this makes me wonder, in a world of web code, frameworks and open-source, is there really a practical difference anymore?  Could a library like jQuery or cURL crossover into the definition of an API?  

Also, do frameworks cross over into this category at all?  Is there part of Rails or Zend that could be more &quot;API-like,&quot; or &quot;libraryesque&quot;?

Is there still a difference between a library and an API?

I am writing a web service that accepts only json, and also outputs only json.

So I need to return the appropriate status code if any other format is requested.

It appears that I have two choices:

1. 406 - Not Acceptable
2. 415 - Unsupported Media Type

It would be great if someone could enlighten me as to the semantics of the two codes.

What are WSDL, SOAP and REST?

I am looking for ways to run test suites in parallel. 

I am aware of  &lt;Execution parallelTestCount=&quot;0&quot;&gt; `.testrunconfig` setting. This allows you to **multiplex** on the number of CPUs. 

I want to run 1000 tests in parallel. This makes sense because I am testing a web service, so 90% of the time spent in a test is waiting for the service to respond. 

Any ideas on how to pull this off ? The tests are written for VS, but I am open to running them outside of VS. 

**Later edit**: the Visual Studio test team have added this in VS 2015 Update 1. See Mark Sowul&#39;s answer bellow.

I have a REST web service that currently exposes this URL:

in order to create a new Media metadata.

Now I need the ability to upload a file at the same time as the media metadata. What&#39;s the best way of going about this? I could introduce a new property called `file` and base64 encode the file, but I was wondering if there was a better way.

There&#39;s also using `multipart/form-data` like what a HTML form would send over, but I&#39;m using a REST web service and I want to stick to using JSON if at all possible.

I have a Windows Service Solution and am trying to add a service reference to a Hermes(Opensource ebms message server) Web Service in VS2010.

I can find the Web Service using it&#39;s URL, but when I try and populate the Service reference I get the following errors in Visual Studio:

Some investigation seemed to suggest it is due to svcutil.exe not been able to build the proxys due to not having permissions to a directory (possibly c:\windows\temp).  I have tried assigning various access permissions, but I am not really sure which user needs the permission, or if it is just a red herring.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Service Reference Error: Failed to generate code for the service reference

I have been unable to overcome this error in Application Loader.  I&#39;ve quit, restarted, tried different computers - it&#39;s like the server is hung up on an op that I never initiated and it won&#39;t time out.  Has anyone seen it before and beaten it?

My app is using in-app purchases, and most of my users can purchase just fine without any problems. For these folks, my app downloads the content after the purchase succeeds and they are happy.

However, for a growing number of my users, once they complete a successful in-app purchase they are being asked for their App Store password every time the app starts up after that. I believe this is happening on the call to:

    [[SKPaymentQueue defaultQueue] addTransactionObserver:observer];

which I am calling on startup in accordance with step 6 in Apple&#39;s in-app purchase guide:

My guess is that, for some reason, Apple&#39;s in-app purchase servers aren&#39;t registering that the transaction finished successfully - even though I call

    [[SKPaymentQueue defaultQueue] finishTransaction:transaction];

when the transaction is completed and my content has been successfully downloaded.

2 questions:

1. Is anyone else seeing this?

2. Does anyone have a suggested fix?

Its a transaction which was made with a different Apple-ID. Thats why it cannot be finished unless you type in the right credentials into the dialog. The Question should be either: 

 1. How can I prevent such dead transactions (transaction has not been finished, user has no network, meanwhile changes App-ID)?
 2. How can you prune the `SkPaymentQueue`?

There&#39;s a PowerShell script named `itunesForward.ps1` that makes iTunes fast forward 30 seconds:

It is executed with a prompt line command:
