In PHP assignment expressions always return the assigned value. So $_config[0] =&amp; $config returns $config - but not the variable itself, but a copy of its value. And returning a reference to a temporary value wouldn&#39;t be particularly useful (changing it wouldn&#39;t do anything).

This fix has been merged into CI 2.2.1 (https://github.com/bcit-ci/CodeIgniter/commit/69b02d0f0bc46e914bed1604cfbd9bf74286b2e3). It&#39;s better to upgrade rather than modifying core framework files.
 

this has been modified in codeigniter 2.2.1...usually not best practice to modify core files, I would always check for updates and 2.2.1 came out in Jan 2015 

It&#39;s not a better idea to override the core.common file of codeigniter. Because that&#39;s the more tested and system files....

I define a struct ...

Sometimes I assign an empty session to it (because nil is not possible)

    session = Session{};

Then I want to check, if it is empty:

How can I fix this?

I know this is a very popular question but I haven&#39;t been able to find a working solution for Laravel 5. I&#39;ve been trying to migrate from Codeigniter for a long time, but this convoluted installation process keeps putting me off.

I don&#39;t want to run a VM, this just seems awkward when switching between projects.

I don&#39;t want to set my document root to the public folder, this is also awkward when switching between projects.

I&#39;ve tried the .htaccess mod_rewrite method

    &lt;/IfModule&gt;

This just gives me a Laravel NotFoundHttpException in compiled.php line 7610.

When I tried L4 a while ago, I used the method of moving the contents of the public folder into the root. The structure of L5 is quite different and following the same steps completely broke Laravel (the server would only return a blank page).

Is there a decent method of removing &#39;public&#39; in a development environment that:

1. Works with L5
2. Allows me to switch between projects with ease (I&#39;m usually working on 2 or 3 at any one time).

Laravel 5 – Remove Public from URL

Working on my first Laravel 5 project and not sure where or how to place logic to force HTTPS on my app. The clincher here is that there are many domains pointing to the app and only two out of three use SSL (the third is a fallback domain, long story). So I&#39;d like to handle this in my app&#39;s logic rather than .htaccess.

In Laravel 4.2 I accomplished the redirect with this code, located in `filters.php`:

    App::before(function($request)
    {
        if( ! Request::secure())
        {
            return Redirect::secure(Request::path());
        }
    });

I&#39;m thinking Middleware is where something like this should be implemented but I cannot quite figure this out using it.

Why is [PHP Composer][1] so slow when all I do is init a project with zero dependencies? Here are the commands I run:

    composer init

&amp;lt;step through composer.json creation, define 0 zero dependencies&gt;

    composer install

Wait 3 minutes (not an exaggeration).

All composer has to do is pull in an autoloader and create `/vendor`, so why does it take so long? For that matter, why doesn&#39;t that step happen on `composer init`?

Is there a configuration option I can use to pull in a cached autloader and vendor upon `init`?

Why is PHP Composer so slow?

I am making an API with `Laravel 5` and I&#39;m testing it with `PHPUnit`. I need to test legacy functionality for compatibility, which is an XML POST. As of right now, my first test looks like:

I am not able to get the content body of an HTTP Request at all. Since XML wasn&#39;t working, I moved forward with the REST part of my API, which uses JSON. Here&#39;s one of my tests:

This is my curl command adding the POST fields:

For the past two months, I have been receiving the following error on Chrome&#39;s developer console:

 - Pages not loading.

 - PHP
 - Ubuntu

This is happening to me on our in-house Apache server. It is not happening to anybody else - i.e. **None of our users are experiencing this problem - nor is anybody else on our dev team.**

Other people are accessing the exact same server with the exact same version of Chrome. I have also tried disabling all extensions and browsing in Incognito mode - to no effect.

I have used Firefox and the exact same thing is occurring. Truncated files and whatnot. The only thing is, Firefox doesn&#39;t raise any console errors so you need to inspect the HTTP request via Firebug to see the problem.

While testing, I was able to fix the issue by forcing HTTP 1.0 in my htaccess file:

    SetEnv downgrade-1.0

This gets rid of the problem. However, forcing HTTP 1.0 over HTTP 1.1 is not a proper solution.

**Update**: Because I&#39;m the only one experiencing this issue, I figured that I needed to spend more time investigating whether or not it was a client side issue. If I go into Chrome&#39;s settings and use the &quot;Restore to Default&quot; option, ***the problem will disappear*** for about 10-20 minutes. Then it returns.

How to setup CRON job to run every 10 seconds in Linux?

I&#39;m using Apache Web Server that has the owner set to `_www:_www`. I never know what is the best practice with file permissions, for example when I create new Laravel 5 project.

Laravel 5 requires `/storage` folder to be writable. I found plenty of different approaches to make it work and I usually end with making it `777` chmod recursively. I know it&#39;s not the best idea though.

The official doc says:

&gt; Laravel may require some permissions to be configured: folders within
&gt; `storage` and `vendor` require write access by the web server.

Does it mean that the web server needs access to the `storage` and `vendor` folders themselves too or just their current contents?

I assume that what is much better, is changing the **owner** instead of permissions. I changed all Laravel&#39;s files permissions recursively to `_www:_www` and that made the site work correctly, as if I changed chmod to `777`. The problem is that now my text editor asks me for password each time I want to save any file and the same happens if I try to change anything in Finder, like for example copy a file.

What is the correct approach to solve these problems?

 1. Change `chmod`
 2. Change the owner of the files to match those of the
        web server and perhaps set the text editor (and Finder?) to skip
        asking for password, or make them use `sudo`
 3. Change the owner of the web server to match the os user (I don&#39;t
    know the consequences)
 4. Something else

How to set up file permissions for Laravel?

I have installed the Windows 10 Insider Program. Everything works, except Apache. When I try to start it, it says that port 80 is blocked. Is there a way to unblock it or **tell Apache to use another port instead?**
