I will leave the accepted answer as just that, since it is the proper solution to running with an alternate pom file.  However, for the use case I described above, I now feel the correct methodology would be to use maven profiles within the pom file.

With profiles, all versions of the test configurations can be contained within the master pom file and then executed as follows:

    mvn clean test -PstandardConfig
    mvn clean test -PalternateConfig
    mvn clean test -PanotherConfig

I found this very interesting solution when I got the final answer. I follow the following approach:-

My project requires Java 1.6 for compilation and running. Now I have a requirement to make it working with Java 1.5 (from the marketing side). I want to replace method body (return type and arguments remain the same) to make it compiling with Java 1.5 without errors.

**Details:** I have an utility class called `OS` which encapsulates all OS-specific things. It has a method

    public static void openFile(java.io.File file) throws java.io.IOException {
      // open the file using java.awt.Desktop
      ...
    }

to open files like with double-click (`start` Windows command or `open` Mac OS X command equivalent). Since it cannot be compiled with Java 1.5, I want to exclude it during compilation and replace by another method which calls `run32dll` for Windows or `open` for Mac OS X using `Runtime.exec`.

**Question: How can I do that? Can annotations help here?**

Note: I use ant, and I can make two java files `OS4J5.java` and `OS4J6.java` which will contain the `OS` class with the desired code for Java 1.5 and 1.6 and copy one of them to `OS.java` before compiling (or an ugly way - replace the content of `OS.java` conditionally depending on java version) but I don&#39;t want to do that, if there is another way.

Elaborating more: in C I could use `ifdef, ifndef`, in Python there is no compilation and I could check a feature using `hasattr` or something else, in Common Lisp I could use `#+feature`. Is there something similar for Java?

Maven `dependency:analyze` complains about the dependencies in my project. How does it determine which are unused and which are undeclared? What should I do about them?

This is supposed to be a working project from my friend.  He demonstrated the project right in front of me, and then I copied the project, imported it as an existing maven project (I&#39;m using `m2eclipse` plugin).

I&#39;ve tried downloading the newest version of maven, and included it in the eclipse helios, but still the same problem. The same error message happens even when I run it it in the shell command line (outside eclipse).

I am wondering what the major difference between running `mvn compile` and `mvn clean compile` are, in practicality.

I understand what the actual difference is, that `mvn clean compile` deletes all the generated files and starts again from scratch, but why would we want to do this? I can assume `mvn compile` will regenerate files if it&#39;s necessary, right?

One thing I noticed in my project was that if you had deleted a source file, without running `clean`, the compiled file remains, which usually wouldn&#39;t be a problem, but could be I suppose.

I’m trying to find a “generic” way of excluding a transitive dependency from being included without having to exclude it from all the dependencies that depend on it.  For example, if I want to exclude slf4j, I do the following:

Maven: The packaging for this project did not assign a file to the build artifact

I have a project on Bitbucket. Only the sources are committed. To retrieve the project onto a new machine, I used Version Control &gt; Checkout from Version Control from within IntelliJ.

It then asks whether I would like to create a new project from this source, to which I reply Yes. So far, so good. It creates a nice little Java project for me, consisting of a single module.

However, my goal in pulling this project into IntelliJ was to turn it into a Maven project. I cannot find any option anywhere that will let me do this!

Is there a way to have IntelliJ just generate a basic empty pom.xml for me, with a name and an artifactId and a repository? Or, is there a way to import the project as a Maven project in the first place? (Whenever I try to create a project from existing source, it only gives me the option of a Java project.)

IntelliJ - Convert a Java project/module into a Maven project/module

I am switching to use Maven for my Spring web app projects and I am running into a simple issue. I am not sure where to put the CSS and JS files in the new project structure.

**Traditional Web App Structure**

In a traditional Java web app structure (In Eclipse, created as a Dynamic Web Project) I put the CSS, Javascript and Images files under the following structure

    WebContent
    |__css/myStyles.css
    |__js/myjs.js
    |__images/myImage.gif
    |__WEB-INF

Then in my jsp if I want to reference a CSS file I do as follows:

    &lt;link rel=&quot;stylesheet&quot; href=&quot;&lt;%=request.getContextPath()%&gt;/css/myStyles.css&quot;&gt;

This works fine. 
     
**Maven Web App Structure**

In a Maven project I have put the css files in these locations:

First Attempt
-------------

Under the **webapp** folder at the same level as WEB-INF just like in a traditional dynamic web project. But when I do the following

    mvn clean tomcat:run

I get the following error from the Spring Framework:

    org.springframework.web.servlet.PageNotFound - No mapping found for HTTP request with URI [/appname/css/myStyles.css] in DispatcherServlet

 
Second Attempt
--------------

Placed my css folder under **src/main/resources** But when I do the following:

    mvn clean tomcat:run

I get the following error from the Spring Framework:
