I&#39;m in the processes of internationalizing an iPhone app - I need to make programmatic changes to certain views based on what the user&#39;s current locale is.  I&#39;m going nuts because no matter what the language preference on the iPhone simulator or actual hardware are, ``locale`` always evaluates to &quot;en_US&quot;:

    NSString *locale = [[NSLocale currentLocale] localeIdentifier];
    NSLog(@&quot;current locale: %@&quot;, locale);

The crazy thing is that the rest of the application behaves as expected.  The correct strings are selected from the Localization.strings file and used in the interface, and the correct .xib files for the selected locale are used.

I have also tried the following, to no avail and with the same result:

    NSString *locale = [[NSLocale autoupdatingCurrentLocale] localeIdentifier];
    NSLog(@&quot;current locale: %@&quot;, locale);

Is there something simple I&#39;m missing?  A preference or an import perhaps?

I am loading an image from a URL provided by a third-party. There is no file extension (or filename for that matter) on the URL (as it is an obscured URL). I can take the data from this (in the form of NSData) and load it into a UIImage and display it fine.

I want to persist this data to a file. However, I don&#39;t know what format the data is in (PNG, JPG, BMP)? I assume it is JPG (since it&#39;s an image from the web) but is there a programmatic way of finding out for sure? I&#39;ve looked around StackOverflow and at the documentation and haven&#39;t been able to find anything.

Edit: Do I really need the file extension? I&#39;m persisting it to an external storage (Amazon S3) but considering that it will always be used in the context of iOS or a browser (both of whom seem fine in interpreting the data without an extension) perhaps this is a non-issue.

Finding image type from NSData or UIImage

I&#39;m currently uploading an image to a server using Imgur on iOS with the following code:

    NSData* imageData = UIImagePNGRepresentation(image);
	NSArray* paths = NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES);
	NSString* fullPathToFile = [[paths objectAtIndex:0] stringByAppendingPathComponent:@&quot;SBTempImage.png&quot;];
	[imageData writeToFile:fullPathToFile atomically:NO];
	
	[uploadRequest setFile:fullPathToFile forKey:@&quot;image&quot;];

The code works fine when run in the simulator and uploading a file from the simulator&#39;s photo library because I&#39;m on a fast ethernet connection. However, the same code times out on the iPhone when selecting an image taken with the iPhone. So, I tried it by saving a small image from the web and attempting to upload that, which worked.

This leads me to believe the large images taken by the iPhone are timing out over the somewhat slow 3G network. Is there any way to compress/resize the image from the iPhone before sending it?

I am storing a openssl private Key EVP_PKEY as nsdata. For this I am serializing into a byte stream using the code below

    p = buf;
    i2d_PrivateKey(pkey, &amp;p);

where pkey  is of type EVP_PKEY.
Then I am storing the bytes from buffer &#39;p&#39; as an NSData using the line given below
 

    NSData *keydata = [NSData dataWithBytes:P length:len];

Now I am converting it to a NSString using the code given below but when i print it into console its giving some other characters.

    NSString *content =[ NSString stringWithCString:[keydata bytes] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];

Could someone help?

Convert NSData to String?

Snow Leopard introduced many new methods to use NSURL objects to refer to files, not pathnames or Core Services&#39; FSRefs.

However, there&#39;s one task I can&#39;t find a URL-based method for: Testing whether a file exists. I&#39;m looking for a URL-based version of [-\[NSFileManager `fileExistsAtPath:`\]](http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Cocoa/Reference/Foundation/Classes/NSFileManager_Class/Reference/Reference.html#//apple_ref/occ/instm/NSFileManager/fileExistsAtPath:). Like that method, it should return `YES` if the URL describes anything, whether it&#39;s a regular file, a directory, or anything else.

I could attempt to look up various [resource values](http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Cocoa/Reference/Foundation/Classes/NSURL_Class/Reference/Reference.html#//apple_ref/occ/instm/NSURL/resourceValuesForKeys:error:), but none of them are explicitly guaranteed to not exist if the file doesn&#39;t, and some of them (e.g., [NSURLEffectiveIconKey](http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Cocoa/Reference/Foundation/Classes/NSURL_Class/Reference/Reference.html#//apple_ref/doc/c_ref/NSURLEffectiveIconKey)) could be costly if it does.

I could just use NSFileManager&#39;s `fileExistsAtPath:`, but if there&#39;s a more modern method, I&#39;d prefer to use that.

Is there a simple method or function in Cocoa, CF, or Core Services that&#39;s guaranteed/documented to tell me whether a given file (or file-reference) URL refers to a file-system object that exists?

I have the following string...

Notice that it has some accented characters. When I try to turn that into a url the returned url is null...

    [NSURL URLWithString:googleSearchString];

So normally the url works except when there are accented non-english characters in the string. Any help on how to handle that?

I have a URL in an iPhone application to work with. But the problem is that it has some spaces in the URL. I want to replace the spaces with &#39;%20&#39;. I know that there are the `stringByReplacingOccurencesOfString` and `stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding` methods. I also have used them. But they are not working for me. The spaces are replaced by some unusual values.
