I was wrong before.  This is the solution you need (until rails 3.1 where the asset_host configurations become unified):

    config.action_mailer.asset_host = &quot;http://localhost:3000&quot;



We need to specify both config.action_controller.asset_host and config.action_mailer.asset_host, on Rails 3.1 and 3.2.

To add the hostname to the image_tag on both e-mail and non-email views, add the following to your environment file:

    config.action_controller.asset_host = &#39;http://localhost:3000&#39;
    config.action_mailer.asset_host = config.action_controller.asset_host

Where &#39;http://localhost:3000&#39; should be replaced by your host URL (and port if applicable).

This needs to be set on both action_controller and action_mailer, even in Rails 3.2.x.

The offending code as to why you can&#39;t do it is here:

Since an ActionMailer View template lacks a Controller, you don&#39;t get the command to rewrite based on an asset_host.  This should probably be a ticket opened to the Rails core team.

You can try the following config and see if it helps:
    
    config.action_mailer.default_url_options = {:host=&gt;&quot;localhost&quot;, :port=&gt;3000, :protocol=&gt;&quot;http://&quot;}

I&#39;m pretty sure it&#39;s only going to work for `url_for` though.

I am trying to proxy a request to different targets depending on an environment variable. My approach was to put the target url into the custom variable $target and give this to proxy_pass. 

But using a variable with proxy_pass doesn&#39;t seem to work. This simple config leads to a &quot;502 Bad Gateway&quot; response from nginx.

The same config without the variable works:

In the [Doctrine 2 documentation about **inheritance mapping**][1], it says there are 2 ways :

 - Single table inheritance (STI)
 - Class table inheritance (CTI)

For both, there is the warning :

&gt; If you use a STI/CTI entity as a many-to-one or one-to-one entity **you should never use one of the classes at the upper levels** of the inheritance hierachy as “targetEntity”, only those that have no subclasses. Otherwise Doctrine CANNOT create proxy instances of this entity and will ALWAYS load the entity eagerly.

So, how can I proceed **to use inheritance with an association to the base (abstract) class** ? (and keep the performance of course)

What I want to do :

Because of the warning in Doctrine documentation, I should do that :

If Amber is _already_ a class, I can get from a string to the class via:

    Object.const_get(&quot;Amber&quot;)
or (in Rails)

But either of these will fail with `NameError: uninitialized constant Amber` if Amber is not already a class.

My first thought is to use the `defined?` method, but it doesn&#39;t discriminate between classes that already exist and those that don&#39;t:

I have a set of rails view helpers that I use regularly, and would like to package them up into a gem, such that I could just put a line in my Gemfile, and have the helpers accessible from my views.

   I have created gems before using Bundler, and Jeweler, however, I&#39;m not all all clear on how to organize the Rails view helpers in a gem, and include them into rails.

   I would appreciate any pointers, or links to up-to-date tutorials on how to do this for Rails 3

In my Rails app I&#39;ve run into an issue a couple times that I&#39;d like to know how other people solve:

I have certain records where a value is optional, so some records have a value and some are null for that column.

If I order by that column on some databases the nulls sort first and on some databases the nulls sort last.

For instance, I have Photos which may or may not belong to a Collection, ie there are some Photos where `collection_id=nil` and some where `collection_id=1` etc. 

If I do `Photo.order(&#39;collection_id desc)` then on SQLite I get the nulls last but on PostgreSQL I get the nulls first.

Is there a nice, standard Rails way to handle this and get consistent performance across any database?

I have the following RSpec test for my UserMailer class:

This test passed the first time, but failed the second time I ran it. After doing a little bit of debugging, it appears that the 1st test added an item to the ActionMailer::Base.deliveries array and that item never got cleared out. That causes the first line in the test to fail since the array is not empty.

Is there a tutorial out there that explains how to set up Devise&#39;s signup confirmation email from scratch (in both development and production), i.e. if you don&#39;t have Action Mailer set up? 

Google searching has just turned up a bunch of separate pieces related to this. No one piece explains enough, and I&#39;m not sure how they fit together. Is there a step-by-step explanation out there, or even something that explains the initial steps?

How do I set up email confirmation with Devise?

trying to upgrade to Rails 4.2, using delayed_job_active_record. I&#39;ve not set the delayed_job backend for test environment as thought that way jobs would execute straight away. 

I&#39;m trying to test the new &#39;deliver_later&#39; method with RSpec, but I&#39;m not sure how.

Old controller code:

    ServiceMailer.delay.new_user(@user)

New controller code:

    ServiceMailer.new_user(@user).deliver_later

I USED to test it like so:

    expect(ServiceMailer).to receive(:new_user).with(@user).and_return(double(&quot;mailer&quot;, :deliver =&gt; true))

Now I get errors using that. (Double &quot;mailer&quot; received unexpected message :deliver_later with (no args))

Just

    expect(ServiceMailer).to receive(:new_user)

fails too with &#39;undefined method `deliver_later&#39; for nil:NilClass&#39;

I&#39;ve tried some examples that allow you to see if jobs are enqueued using test_helper in ActiveJob but I haven&#39;t managed to test that the correct job is queued.

    expect(enqueued_jobs.size).to eq(1)

This passes if the test_helper is included, but it doesn&#39;t allow me to check it is the correct email that is being sent.

What I want to do is:

 - test that the correct email is queued (or executed straight away in test env)
 - with the correct parameters (@user)

Any ideas??
