First of all, *the easiest way to run things at startup is to add them to the file `/etc/rc.local`.*

Another simple way is to use `@reboot` in your crontab. Read the cron manpage for details.

However, if you want to do things properly, in addition to adding a script to `/etc/init.d` you need to tell ubuntu when the script should be run and with what parameters. This is done with the command `update-rc.d` which creates a symlink from some of the `/etc/rc*` directories to your script. So, you&#39;d need to do something like:

    update-rc.d yourscriptname start 2

However, real init scripts should be able to handle a variety of command line options and otherwise integrate to the startup process. The file `/etc/init.d/README` has some details and further pointers.



Im switching from firebug to Google Chrome developer tools. I like it so far, but one feature that I really missing is replaying a http post. 

on firebug, I can right click on the request (on the net or console tab), &quot;open in new tab&quot; and replay that request. When I try the same thing on google chrome, it did not sent it as POST instead as a GET so the parameter did not sent to the server

`ls /home/user/new/*.txt` prints all txt files in that directory. However it prints the output as follows:

    [me@comp]$ ls /home/user/new/*.txt

and so on.

I want to run the `ls` command not from the `/home/user/new/` directory thus I have to give the full directory name, yet I want the output to be only as

    [me@comp]$ ls /home/user/new/*.txt
    file1.txt    file2.txt    file3.txt 

I don&#39;t want the entire path. Only filename is needed. This issues has to be solved using ls command, as its output is meant for another program.

I&#39;m trying to install Hadoop on Ubuntu 11.10. I set the `JAVA_HOME` variable in the file `conf/hadoop-env.sh` to:

and then I execute these commands (Standalone Operation):

    $ mkdir input

but I have the following error when executing the third command:

One of the problems, I face with supervisord is that when I have a command which in turn spawns another process, supervisord is not able to kill it. 

For example I have a java process which when runs normally is like

     $ zkServer.sh start-foreground
     $ ps -eaf | grep zk
     user 30404 28280  0 09:21 pts/2    00:00:00 bash zkServer.sh start-foreground
     user 30413 30404 76 09:21 pts/2    00:00:10 java -Dzookeeper.something..something

The supervisord config file looks like:

    [program:zookeeper]
    command=zkServer.sh start-foreground
    autorestart=true
    stopsignal=KILL

These kind of processes which have multiple childs are not well handled by supervisord when it comes to stopping them from `supervisorctl`. So when I run this from the supervisord and try to stop it from supervisorctl, only the top level process gets killed but not the actual java process.
