Just go to **Apple Menu -&gt; System Preferences... -&gt; Keyboard -&gt; Keyboard Tab -&gt; Modifier Keys** and select `Control` for `Caps Lock`. 

I&#39;m trying to set up pretty format colors for Git.  From what I can tell version 1.6.0 only recognizes red, green and blue.

Is there a way to list the available pretty format colors for Git?

Unfortunately this is on a legacy SCO OpenServer 5.0.7 machine and the last version of Git released by SCO Skunkworks was 1.6.0.3.

I installed MySQL on Mac OS X Mountain Lion with `homebrew install mysql`, but when I tried `mysql -u root` I got the following error:

What does this error mean? How can I fix it?

I set up a virtualenv environment on my Mac, but cannot get Pip to install packages. It fails with the following error:

    /Volumes/Macintosh: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

I tracked the problem down to there being a space in the path, as is answered here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/10873611/126564  
(the path being `/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Python/my_project`)

But that&#39;s a bit of a problem. The proposed solution is to:

but *the part with the space is the volume itself.* All of my paths would have a space, unless I stored them in a directory of `/`. And I don&#39;t think &quot;store your stuff outside of user space&quot; is a good solution.

Is there a better solution to this?

Ok, I&#39;m a bit new to Macs and OSX, but I picked one up so that I can do some troubleshooting on my Java programs with one since the company I work for uses a combination of OSX and Windows machines.  The problem I&#39;m running into is, when I install Java 7 from Oracle&#39;s website, it updates the preferences menu and appears to execute .jar files correctly when double-clicking them, but the terminal window&#39;s version is still 1.6.0_43 and running the same .jar file from the terminal results in runtime errors due to the older version.

When I navigate to /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/ I&#39;m presented with an empty folder.  From what I&#39;ve seen in other articles, this is where the Java 1.7.0&#39;s version folder should be.  Any idea what&#39;s going on?  How can I get the terminal to use the correct version of Java?

Mac OSX Java Terminal version incorrect

I am fairly new to MySQL and I am getting a pretty interesting error on which I cannot find any help via google and the stackoverflow search.

I am running a local server of MySQL 5.6.10 on MacOS 10.8.3 and manage my database via Navicat essentials for MySQL.

The error I get is that after running and managing my database just fine for a couple of days/weeks something triggers to (it appears incompletely) delete some of the tables I created using queries from within Navicat.

When I try to run queries using these tables, Navicat then warns me that the particular table does not exist. So far so good - here comes the good part:

When I try to CREATE the table, e.g. named &quot;temp&quot;, that was previously there, I get the following error message:
    
    Error : Tablespace for table &#39;`database`.`temp`&#39; exists. Please DISCARD the tablespace before IMPORT.

However, if I try to drop the table, or try to discard the tablespace for this table, using

    DROP TABLE temp;
    ALTER TABLE temp DISCARD TABLESPACE;

I get the following error messages:

    Error : Unknown table &#39;database.temp&#39;
    Error : Table &#39;database.temp&#39; doesn&#39;t exist

So that means that I am advised to discard the table space but when I try to do so the table does not exist. Is it possible that there is some type of remnant of this table at a different place where the DISCARD query isn&#39;t checking? And does anybody have an idea what could trigger all that - completely randomly as it seems?

As I said, I&#39;m new to the subject and pretty much clueless. I suspect that re-booting my laptop, i.e. resetting my local MySQL server, or maybe user permission rights might have to do with it, but I am just hypothesizing here.

knitr Markdown highlighting in Emacs?

From what I have read, there are two ways to debug code in Python:

* With a traditional debugger such as `pdb` or `ipdb`. This supports commands such as `c` for `continue`, `n` for `step-over`, `s` for `step-into` etc.), but you don&#39;t have direct access to an IPython shell which can be extremely useful for object inspection.

* Using  **IPython** by [embedding][1] an IPython shell in your code. You can do `from IPython import embed`, and then use `embed()` in your code. When your program/script hits an `embed()` statement, you are dropped into an IPython shell. This allows the full inspection of objects and testing of Python code using all the IPython goodies. However, when using `embed()` you can&#39;t **step-by-step** through the code anymore with handy keyboard shortcuts.


Is there any way to combine the best of both worlds? I.e.

1. Be able to  **step-by-step** through your code with handy pdb/ipdb keyboard shortcuts.
2. At any such step (e.g. on a given statement), have access to a full-fledged **IPython shell**.

### IPython debugging *as in* MATLAB:
An example of this type of &quot;enhanced debugging&quot; can be found  in MATLAB, where the user **always** has full access to the MATLAB engine/shell, and she can still **step-by-step** through her code, define conditional breakpoints, etc. From what I have discussed with other users, this is the debugging feature that people miss the most when moving from MATLAB to IPython.

### IPython debugging in Emacs and other editors:
I don&#39;t want to make the question too specific, but I work mostly in Emacs, so I wonder if there is any way to bring this functionality into it. **Ideally**, Emacs (or the editor) would allow the programmer to set breakpoints anywhere on the code and communicate with the interpreter or debugger to have it stop in the location of your choice, and bring to a full IPython interpreter on that location.
