Add this to your `.gitignore` (in the root folder):

    /index.html

The leading `/` makes git use an absolute path (relative to the current `.gitignore` location), whereas all other lines are just treated as some kind of wildcard.

How does the [CSS Block Formatting Context][1] work? 

CSS2.1 specifications says that in a block formatting context, boxes are laid out vertically, starting at the top. This happens even if there are floated elements in the way, except if the block box established a new block formatting context. As we know, when browsers render block boxes in a block formatting context, the floated element is omitted, why does establishing a new block formatting context work?

How are boxes (block boxes and inline boxes) laid out in the normal flow? 

I read somewhere that block elements generate block boxes, but floating elements are ignored when a user agent draws box and take them into account when they fill out content. Whilst floating elements will overlap other elements&#39;s boundary of the boxes, the solution is establishing a new block formatting context for the overlapped elements using `overflow:hidden`.

I thought the floating box should float to the top of the containg block-the div with class `content`. Besides, if the floating box appears earlier in the markup, then it will display what I think it should be.

Stack Overflow question *[How and/or why is merging in Git better than in SVN?][1]* is a great question with some **great answers**. However none of them show a simple example where merging in Git works better than [SVN][2].

On the chance this question will be closed as a duplicate, what is

 1. A concrete merge scenario
 2. How it is difficult in SVN?
 3. How the same merge is easier in Git?

A few points:

 - No philosophy or deep explanations of what a DVCS is please. These are great, really, but I don&#39;t want their details to obfuscate the answer to this (IMHO) important
 - I don&#39;t care about &quot;historic SVN&quot; at the moment. Please compare modern Git (1.7.5) to modern SVN (1.6.15).
 - No renames please - I know that Git detects renames and moves, while SVN doesn&#39;t. This is great, but I am looking for something deeper, and example that doesn&#39;t involve renames or moves.
 - No rebase or other &#39;advanced&#39; Git operation. Just show me the merge please.

I had a problem, that `user1` could clone a repository without problem, while `user2` could clone only an empty one. I had set `GIT_TRACE=1`, but nothing useful was told.

I&#39;m writing a very long document in LaTeX. I have my work computer and my laptop, and I work on them both. I need to keep all the files synchronized between the two computers, and also would like to keep a revision history. I chose git as my DVCS, and I&#39;m hosting my repository on my server. I&#39;m also using Kile + Okular to do the editing. Kile doesn&#39;t have an integrated git plugin. I&#39;m also not collaborating with anyone on this text. I&#39;m also thinking about putting another private repository on codaset, if my server for some reason is not accessible.

What is the recommended workflow practice in this case? How can branching be fitted in this working scheme? Is there a way to compare two versions of the same file? What about using a stash?


git + LaTeX workflow

I&#39;ve a `.gitignore` file at the root of my repo. The `.gitignore` file has the following pattern to exclude the compiled Python files and that is the only line in the file.

    *.pyc

Now when i do the following at the root of the repo.

    git init
    git add . 
    git status 

It shows that it still tracks the `.pyc` file and tries to add it as new file. See output below.

System info: Windows 7, cygwin 

Note: This issue is CLEARLY not about the ignored file being already tracked. I also tried both DOS- and Unix-style line endings on the `.gitignore` file. 

`git status` gives:

    # Changes to be committed:

.gitignore does not work - file is still being tracked

I have a git repository hosted on Github. After committing many files, I am realizing that I need to create `.gitignore` and exclude `.exe`, `.obj` files.

However, will it automatically remove these committed files from the repository? Is there any way to force that?

I tried `git rm --cached bin/` but all I received was the error:

When I tried (at the root directory, where .git exists) `git rm --cached MyProj/bin/` the error is different:
