Removing control symbols only:

    :%s/[[:cntrl:]]//g

Removing non-printable characters (note that in versions prior to ~8.1.1 this removes non-ASCII characters also):

    :%s/[^[:print:]]//g

The difference between them could be seen if you have some non-printable-non-control characters, e.g. [zero-width space](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-width_space):

Say you want to replace ^C with C:

&lt;code&gt;:%s/&lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;&lt;kbd&gt;V&lt;/kbd&gt;&lt;kbd&gt;C&lt;/kbd&gt;/C/g&lt;/code&gt;

Where &lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;&lt;kbd&gt;V&lt;/kbd&gt;&lt;kbd&gt;C&lt;/kbd&gt; means type V then C while holding &lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt; pressed.

&lt;kbd&gt;Ctrl&lt;/kbd&gt;&lt;kbd&gt;V&lt;/kbd&gt; lets you enter control characters.


Try this after saving your file in vim (assuming you are in Linux environment)

    :%!tr -cd &#39;[:print:]\n&#39;

None of the answers here using Vim&#39;s control characters worked for me.  I had to enter a unicode range.  

    :%s/[\x00-\x08\x0B\x0C\x0E-\x1F\x7F-\x9F]//g

You can use:

    :%s/^C//g


To get the `^C` hold the control key, press `V` then `C` (Both while holding the control key) and the `^C` will appear. This will find all occurrences and replace them with nothing.

To remove both `^C` and `^B` you can do:

    :%s/^C\|^B//g

You can use the [`CTRL-V`][1] prefix to enter them, or if they&#39;re not easily typeable, yank and insert them using [`CTRL-R`][2] `&quot;`.

I want to bind a textblock text to a property of a static class. Whenever the property value of the static class changes, it should reflect to the textblock which is on the other window or custom control.

Simple WPF/XAML question. In XAML, how do I reference the Self/this object in a given context? In a very basic app with a main window, one control, and a coded C# property of the window, I want to bind a property of the control to the hand coded property of the window.

I often work with text files which have a variable amount of whitespaces as word separators (text processors like Word do this, to distribute fairly the whitespace amount due to different sizes of letters in certain fonts and they put this annoying variable amount of spaces even when saving as plain text).

I would like to automate the process of replacing these sequences of whitespaces that have variable length with single spaces. I suspect a regex could do it, but there are also whitespaces at the beginning of paragraphs (usually four of them, but not always), which I would want to let unchanged, so basically my regex should also not touch the leading whitespaces and this adds to the complexity.

I&#39;m using vim, so a regex in the vim regex dialect would be very useful to me, if this is doable.

My current progress looks like this:

    :%s/ \+/ /g

but it doesn&#39;t work correctly.

I&#39;m also considering to write a vim script that could parse text lines one by one, process each line char by char and skip the whitespaces after the first one, but I have a feeling this would be overkill.

Is it possible to create rules in Outlook 2007 based on a regex string? 

I&#39;m trying to add a filter for messages containing a string such as: `4000-10`, a four digit number followed by a dash and then a two digit number, which can be anything from `0000-00` to `9999-99`. 

I was using this as a regex: `\b[0-9]{4}\-[0-9]{2}\b` but the filter isn&#39;t working. I&#39;ve tried a few other modifications as well with no luck. I wasn&#39;t able to find anything concrete online about whether Outlook even supports entering regexes into a rule, though, so I figured I would ask here in case I&#39;m wasting my time.

EDIT: Thanks to Chris&#39;s comment below, I was able to implement this filter via a macro. I thought I would share my code below in case it is able to help anyone else:

Vim is my preferred text editor when I program, and thus I always run into a particularly annoying issue. 

Frequently, when I quickly need to save the buffer and continue on to some other miscellaneous task, I do the typical

    :w

However, I always&#160;— what seems to be like more than 50% of the time&#160;— manage to capitalize that&#160;`:w`. Naturally, Vim yells at me because `W` is an invalid command:
    
    E492: Not an editor command: W

My question is how can one **alias colon-commands in Vim**. Particularly, could you exemplify how to alias `W` to `w`.

I am aware of the process to *map keys* to certain *commands*, but that is not what I’m looking for.
