To encode the characters, you can use `CGI.escapeHTML`:

    string = CGI.escapeHTML(&#39;test &quot;escaping&quot; &lt;characters&gt;&#39;)

To decode them, there is `CGI.unescapeHTML`:

    CGI.unescapeHTML(&quot;test &amp;quot;unescaping&amp;quot; &amp;lt;characters&amp;gt;&quot;)

Of course, before that you need to include the CGI library:

    require &#39;cgi&#39;

And if you&#39;re in Rails, you don&#39;t need to use CGI to encode the string. There&#39;s the `h` method.

    &lt;%= h &#39;escaping &lt;html&gt;&#39; %&gt;

I think [Nokogiri gem][1] is also a good choice. It is very stable and has a huge contributing community.

To decode characters in Rails use:

    &lt;%= raw &#39;&lt;html&gt;&#39; %&gt;
So, 

    &lt;%= raw &#39;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&#39; %&gt;

would output

    &lt;br&gt;

If you don&#39;t want to add a new dependency just to do this (like `HTMLEntities`) and you&#39;re already using `Hpricot`, it can both escape and unescape for you. It handles much more than `CGI`:

    Hpricot.uxs &quot;foo&amp;nbsp;b&amp;auml;r&quot;
    =&gt; &quot;foo&#160;b&#228;r&quot;


You can use `htmlascii` gem:

    Htmlascii.convert string

I&#39;m pretty new to Python and am completely confused by `.join()` which I have read is the preferred method for concatenating strings.

I tried:

    strid = repr(595)
    print array.array(&#39;c&#39;, random.sample(string.ascii_letters, 20 - len(strid)))
        .tostring().join(strid)

and got something like:

    5wlfgALGbXOahekxSs9wlfgALGbXOahekxSs5

Why does it work like this?  Shouldn&#39;t the `595` just be automatically appended?

    a = [1, 2, 3, 4]

If I want all but the first item, I can write `a.drop(1)`, which is great. If I want all but the *last* item, though, I can only think of this way

    a[0..-2]   # or
    a[0...-1]

but neither of these seem as clean as using `drop`. Any other built-in ways I&#39;m missing?

I&#39;ve missed the memo somewhere, and I hope you&#39;ll explain this to me.

Why is the eigenclass of an object different from `self.class`?

    class Foo
      def initialize(symbol)
        eigenclass = class &lt;&lt; self

My train of logic that equates the eigenclass with `class.self` is rather simple:

`class &lt;&lt; self` is a way of declaring class methods, rather than instance methods. It&#39;s a shortcut to `def Foo.bar`.

So within the reference to the class object, returning `self` should be identical to `self.class`. This is because `class &lt;&lt; self` would set `self` to `Foo.class` for definition of class methods/attributes.

Am I just confused? Or, is this a sneaky trick of Ruby meta-programming?
