I want to access `/home/weasel` to read some files from there but I don&#39;t want to write the full path of course - so other users can use the script.. how do you know your username or your home dir with python on Linux?

I have a `position: fixed` div in a layout, as a sidebar. I&#39;ve been asked to have part of it&#39;s content stay fixed to the top of it (internally), and the rest to scroll _if it overflows the bottom of the div_.

I&#39;ve had a look at [this answer](https://stackoverflow.com/a/4646733/383609), however the solution presented there doesn&#39;t work with `position: fixed` or `position: absolute` containers, which is a pain.

I&#39;ve made a JSFiddle demonstration of my problem [here](http://jsfiddle.net/jamwaffles/AKL35/1). The large amount of text should ideally scroll, instead of overflowing into the bottom of the page. The height of the header can vary with content, and may be animated.

Without a fixed header, I can simply add `overflow-y: scroll` to `div.sidebar` and I can happily scroll all it&#39;s content if it overflows the bottom of the container. However, I&#39;m running into issues with having a fixed, variable height header at the top of the sidebar, and having any content underneath that scroll if it&#39;s too long to fit into the container. 

`div.sidebar` _must_ stay `position: fixed`, and I would very much like to do this without any hacks, as well as make it as cross browser as possible. I&#39;ve attempted various things, but none of them work, and I&#39;m unsure as to what to try from here.

How can I make a div inside a `position: fixed` container scroll only in the Y direction when it&#39;s content overflows the containing div, with a fixed header of varying, indeterminate height? I&#39;d very much like to stay away from JS, but if I have to use it I will.

I cannot figure out what is wrong with my markup, but the placeholder for the text area will not appear. It seems as though it may be covered up with some blank spaces and tabs. When you focus on the text area and delete from where the cursor puts itself, then leave the text area, the proper placeholder then appears.

HTML5 textarea placeholder not appearing

I want to add a background image on the right side of the list items, and want to have some padding from the right side as well, but I&#39;m unable to do that. Please have a look at following example:

Should create an input with an (optional) user-agent provided datepicker, but its not widely supported yet, so we&#39;re using a jQuery UI Datepicker. How can we allow browsers to use their own datepicker and fall back on jQuery UI only if the browser doesn&#39;t have such a thing?

At present I think only Opera has a built in datepicker, but a test for Opera would obviously be bad. Is there a way this feature can be detected (if it can at all in a portable manner)?

100% height minus header?

I&#39;ve been using Twitter Bootstrap to build a site, and a lot of its functionality depends on wrapping things in `&lt;a&gt;`, even if they&#39;re just going to execute Javascript. I&#39;ve had problems with the `href=&quot;#&quot;` tactic that Bootstrap&#39;s documentation recommends, so I was trying to find a different solution.

But then I tried just removing the `href` attribute altogether. I&#39;ve been using `&lt;a class=&#39;bunch of classes&#39; data-whatever=&#39;data&#39;&gt;`, and having Javascript handle the rest. And it works.

Yet something&#39;s telling me I shouldn&#39;t be doing this. Right? I mean, technically `&lt;a&gt;` is supposed to be a link to something, but I&#39;m not entirely sure *why* this is a problem. Or is it?



Valid to use &lt;a&gt; (anchor tag) without href attribute?

I am trying to clean up the way my anchors work. I have a header that is fixed to the top of the page, so when you link to an anchor elsewhere in the page, the page jumps so the anchor is at the top of the page, leaving the content behind the fixed header (I hope that makes sense).  I need a way to offset the anchor by the 25px from the height of the header. I would prefer HTML or CSS, but Javascript would be acceptable as well.

What I am attempting to do is to highlight a div with a certain id, when It has been referred to by an anchor on another page IE:

I have a page with some jQuery functions. The HTML on the page looks like so:
