I add the following paths to PATH:

 - C:\Program Files\Git\bin\

**In windows 7:**

 3. On the very far left, click the &quot;Advanced system settings&quot; link.
 4. Click the &quot;Environment Variables&quot; button at the bottom.

 6. At the end of &quot;Variable value&quot;, insert a ; if there is not already

I want to use the marquee effect on a TextView, but the text is only being scrolled when the TextView gets focus. That&#39;s a problem, because in my case, it can&#39;t.

I am using:

      android:ellipsize=&quot;marquee&quot;
      android:marqueeRepeatLimit=&quot;marquee_forever&quot;

Is there a way to have the TextView always scroll its text? I&#39;ve seen this being done in the Android Market app, where the app name will scroll in the title bar, even if it doesn&#39;t receive focus, but I couldn&#39;t find this being mentioned in the API docs.

I was trying to edit an old commit message as explained [here][1]. 

The thing is that now, when I try to run `rebase -i HEAD~5` it says `interactive rebase already started`.

So then I try: `git rebase --continue` but got this error:

    error: Ref refs/heads/master is at 7c1645b447a8ea86ee143dd08400710c419b945b but expected c7577b53d05c91026b9906b6d29c1cf44117d6ba
    fatal: Cannot lock the ref &#39;refs/heads/master&#39;.

Any ideas?

Change old commit message using `git rebase`

In a project where some of the files contains ^M as newline separators. Diffing these files are apparently impossible, since git-diff sees it as the entire file is just a single line.

How does one diff with the previous version?

Is there an option like &quot;treat ^M as newline when diffing&quot; ?

git-diff to ignore ^M

I&#39;m not clear on how `git revert` works. For example, I want to revert to a commit six commits behind the head, reverting all the changes in the intermediary commits in between.

Say its [SHA][1] hash is `56e05fced214c44a37759efa2dfc25a65d8ae98d`. Then why can&#39;t I just do something like:

    git revert 56e05fced214c44a37759efa2dfc25a65d8ae98d

Revert to a commit by a SHA hash in Git?

When switching branches with git checkout I would assume that most of the time you would want to update your submodules.

- In what situation do you **not** want to update submodules after switching?
- What would break if this was done automatically by git checkout?

Updated with example:

- Branch A has submodule S at 3852f1
- Branch B has submodule S at fd72d7

On branch A, git checkout B will result in a working copy of branch B with submodule S at 3852f1 (with a modified S). git submodule update will checkout S at fd72d7.

* After a clean clone from GitHub, I can edit/add/commit/push a modified file.
* If I then repeat this a second time I get the above error.
* I can push to other GitHub repositories just fine.
* I&#39;ve checked file/directory permissions on my side, and they seem OK.
* I&#39;m running git 1.6.2.3 on Mac OS X 10.5.8

The above repository was the source of my fun for a previous Stack Overflow question ([SO 1904860][1]), so maybe the GitHub repo got corrupted. The only similar issue I&#39;ve found via searching was an [unpack failed][2] problem reported on github. Has anybody else run into this issue before, especially when *not* using GitHub?

Error pushing to GitHub - insufficient permission for adding an object to repository database

First off, I&#39;m new to Git.

I deleted a bunch of files locally on my Mac using Finder. I want the files that I deleted to no longer show in the current branch, but they do. 

Any Git users know a command to update the index?

I need to recover two Git branches that I somehow deleted during a push.

These two branches were created on a different system and then pushed to my &quot;shared&quot; (github) repository.

On my system, I (apparently) retrieved the branches during a fetch:

    ~/myfolder&gt; git fetch

It&#39;s not terribly easy to get the branches off of their birthplace machine, so I&#39;d like to try and recover them from my local if possible.
 
All of the git &quot;undo&quot; information I&#39;ve googled has to with recovering lost commits. I don&#39;t think that applies here, since I don&#39;t have commit UIDs for these branches.

I&#39;d like to know how I can get these back. I&#39;d also like to know how they were deleted in the first place and how I can avoid this in the future.

Git: Recover deleted (remote) branch

I love [GitHub][1] and their gist service, and that&#39;s why I&#39;m keeping a lot of code snippets and even development notes as a gist on my GitHub account. It also makes it easy to share them with my colleagues.

The problem is that it doesn&#39;t scale!! The GitHub features for gist are primitive, and I have lots of gists there which make it really difficult to find some of my old gists. There&#39;s no search, no tagging, or anything. 

Do you know any application that can handle this mess? I would like an application that could

- Search my gists
- List my gists by source type and date
- Let me edit or copy them 
- Let me tag or at least edit description 

I would love to see something like this, and I&#39;m willing to pay even some bucks for it. 

So how do you manage you gists on GitHub? Do you know any software? 

There&#39;s one called [drift](http://github.com/atduskgreg/drift/) written in MacRuby, but I couldn&#39;t compile it, and it hasn&#39;t been updated for a while.

How do you manage your gists on GitHub?

I&#39;d like to create a repo which pulls in a remote repo.

For example, let&#39;s say jQuery as a submodule:

    git://github.com/jquery/jquery.git

What would be the process of creating a repo with jQuery as a submodule and adding my own external as a remote repo.

Also once this is setup, if I push / pull to my own remote, will the external remain intact?
