`DATETIME`s are not &quot;stored in the following format&quot;. They are stored in a binary format. 

    SELECT CAST(GETDATE() AS BINARY(8))

The display format in the question is independent of storage.

Formatting into a particular display format should be done by your application. 

As you are using SQL Server 2008, go with Martin&#39;s answer.

If you find yourself needing to do it in SQL Server 2005 where you don&#39;t have access to the `Date` column type, I&#39;d use:

I have the need to concatenate a string with a field value in a MySQL query in order to LEFT JOIN two tables.

Table one has a column called &quot;category_id&quot; with numeric values, such as 61, 78, 94 and such.

I have tried using the || operator instead of the + operator, but still no luck. Is it possible to do this in MySQL, or have I jumped the gun here?

Concatenate string with field value in MySQL

I have a table for storing coupons/discounts, and I want to use the coupon_code column as the primary key, which is a `VARCHAR`.

My rationale is that, each coupon will have a unique code, and the only commands I will be running are `SELECT ... FROM ... WHERE coupon_code=&#39;..&#39;`

I won&#39;t be doing any joins or indexing, and I don&#39;t see there ever being more than a few hundred entries in this table.

It seems to me that this will be OK, but I don&#39;t know if there is anything I&#39;m missing/not thinking about.

Can I use VARCHAR as the PRIMARY KEY?

I want to get every IP address from `login_log` which doesn&#39;t have a row in `ip_location`.  
I tried this query but it throws a syntax error.

    FROM login_log 
    WHERE NOT EXIST (SELECT ip_location.ip
                     FROM ip_location
                     WHERE login_log.ip = ip_location.ip)

I moved a database from SQL Server 2012 to Azure.  I don&#39;t want to use the user `master`, so I created a user `test`.  This is what I did for database XXX on Azure:

    create user test from login test with default_schema=[dbo]

I checked, and the database objects I am interested in are all in the schema `dbo`.  The table `Users` is in the schema `dbo`.

The connection string in my web project has `test` as the login.  It produces the error message:

I have a `.bak` file, and I want to use this file to recreate the database in a fresh install of SQL Server 2008 Management Studio.

Can someone point me in the right direction on how this can be done?

I have tried:

1. right click on the Databases container within object explorer

2. from context menu select Restore database

3. Specify To Database as either a new or existing database

4. Specify Source for restore as from device

5. Select Backup media as File

6. Click the Add button and browse to the location of the BAK file

but I am getting error that

How to import a bak file into SQL Server Express

I&#39;m receiving a date string from an API, and it is formatted as `yyyy-mm-dd`.

I am currently using a regex to validate the string format, which works ok, but I can see some cases where it could be a correct format according to the string but actually an invalid date. i.e. `2013-13-01`, for example.

Is there a better way in PHP to take a string such as `2013-13-01` and tell if it is a valid date or not for the format `yyyy-mm-dd`?

I am using following code to convert.

I am getting the DateTime from one application and passing this object to other application and That application is storing that date into MySql&#39;s DateTime field which is in the format &quot;yyyy-MM-dd&quot;.
