[Paint.NET][1] will create and edit PNGs with gusto. It&#39;s an excellent program in many respects. It&#39;s free as in beer and speech.

[Inkscape][1] is a vector drawing program that exports PNG images.  So, you end up editing SVG documents and exporting them to PNGs.  Inkscape is good if you&#39;re starting from scratch, but wouldn&#39;t be ideal if you just want to edit existing PNGs.

Note--Inkscape is open source and available for free on multiple platforms.

I&#39;ve worked on many projects where I&#39;ve been given code by others to update. More often than not I compile it and get about 1,000+ compiler warnings. When I see compiler warnings they make me feel dirty, so my first task is to clean up the code and remove them all. Typically I find about a dozen problems like uninitialized variables such.

I don&#39;t understand why people leave them in and don&#39;t have perfectly clean compiles with no warnings. Am I missing something? Is there any valid reason to just leave them? Any horror stories to share?

Being primarily a C++ developer the absence of [RAII (Resource Acquisition Is Initialization)](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_acquisition_is_initialization) in Java and .NET has always bothered me. The fact that the onus of cleaning up is moved from the class writer to its consumer (by means of `try finally` or .NET&#39;s [`using` construct](http://blogs.msdn.com/cyrusn/archive/2005/05/10/415956.aspx)) seems to be markedly inferior.

I see why in Java there is no support for RAII since all objects are located on the heap and the garbage collector inherently doesn&#39;t support deterministic destruction, but in .NET with the introduction of value-types (`struct`) we have the (seemingly) perfect candidate for RAII. A value type that&#39;s created on the stack has a well defined scope and C++ destructor semantics can be used. However the CLR does not permit a value-type to have a destructor.

My random searches found one argument that if a value-type is [boxed](http://www.csharphelp.com/archives/archive100.html) it falls under the jurisdiction of the garbage collector and therefore its destruction becomes non-deterministic. 
I feel that this argument isn&#39;t strong enough, the benefits of RAII are big enough to say that a value-type with a destructor cannot be boxed (or used as a class member).

**To cut a long story short my question is**: are there any other reasons value types can not be used in order to introduce RAII to .NET?  (or do you think my argument about RAII&#39;s obvious advantages are flawed?)

**Edit:** I must have not phrased the question clearly since the first four answers have missed the point. I *know* about `Finalize` and its non-deterministic characteristics, I know about the `using` construct and I feel these two options are inferior to RAII. `using` is one more thing the consumer of a class must remember (how many people forgot to put a `StreamReader` in a `using` block?). My question is a philosophical one about the language design, why is it the way it is and can it be improved?

For instance with a generic deterministically destructible value-type I can make the `using` and `lock` keywords redundant (achievable by library classes):

Can I create a Controller that simply returns an image asset?

I would like to route this logic through a controller, whenever a URL such as the following is requested:

    www.mywebsite.com/resource/image/topbanner

The controller will look up `topbanner.png` and send that image directly back to the client.

I&#39;ve seen examples of this where you have to create a View - I don&#39;t want to use a View. I want to do it all with just the Controller.

Is this possible?

Where splitBitmaps is a List&amp;lt;BitMap&amp;gt; BUT this works in VB for at least 4 iterations:

I actually found a reason (sort of) for this working but forgot to post it.  It has to do with converting the image to a bitmap instead of just trying to clone the raw image if I remember.

C# Image.Clone Out of Memory Exception

I&#39;m loading an image from a file, and I want to know how to validate the image before it is fully read from the file.

    string filePath = &quot;image.jpg&quot;;
    Image newImage = Image.FromFile(filePath);

The problem occurs when image.jpg isn&#39;t really a jpg.  For example, if I create an empty text file and rename it to image.jpg, an OutOfMemory Exception  will be thrown when image.jpg is loaded.

I&#39;m looking for a function that will validate an image given a stream or a file path of the image.

Example function prototype

High Quality Image Scaling Library

I&#39;m trying to convert a PDF to a PNG image (at least the cover of one). I&#39;m successfully extracting the first page of the PDF with pdftk. I&#39;m using imagemagick to do the conversion:

    convert cover.pdf cover.png

This works, but unfortunately the cover.png comes through incorrectly rendered (some of the alpha object in the PDF aren&#39;t rendered properly). I know ImageMagick uses GhostScript to do the conversion and if I do it directly with gs I can get the desired results, but I&#39;d rather use the convert library as it has other tools I&#39;d like to leverage.

This command in GhostScript accomplishes the desired image:

    gs -sDEVICE=pngalpha -sOutputFile=cover.png -r144 cover.pdf

I&#39;m wondering is there any way to pass arguments through convert to GhostScript or am I stuck with calling GhostScript directly?





Converting a PDF to PNG

Is it possible to capture or print what&#39;s displayed in an html canvas as an image or pdf?

I have a bunch of high quality PNG files.  I want to use PHP to convert them to JPG because of it&#39;s smaller file sizes while maintaining quality.  I want to display the JPG files on the web.

I&#39;m having problems with a transparent PNG image showing black dithered pixel artifacts around the edge of the non transparent part of the image.  It only does this in Internet Explorer and it only does it from a Javascript file it is used in.

...notice the girl in the bottom right corner. She has artifacts around her in IE8 (I haven&#39;t tested it in previous versions of IE, but I&#39;m assuming it probably does the same). It works perfectly in Firefox and Chrome. The image is loaded from a Javascript file to produce the mouseover effect.

If you load the image all by itself, it works fine.

The image was produced in Photoshop CS3.

I&#39;ve read things about removing the Gama, but that apparently was in previous versions of Photoshop and when I load it in TweakPNG, it doesn&#39;t have Gama.

Other than the fact that PNG is a more common image format, is there any technical reason to favor favicon.png vs. favicon.ico?
