I want to calculate the average of a set of circular data. For example, I might have several samples from the reading of a compass. The problem of course is how to deal with the wraparound. The same algorithm might be useful for a clockface.

The actual question is more complicated - what do statistics mean on a sphere or in an algebraic space which &quot;wraps around&quot;, e.g. the additive group mod n. The answer may not be unique, e.g. the average of 359 degrees and 1 degree could be 0 degrees or 180, but statistically 0 looks better.

This is a real programming problem for me and I&#39;m trying to make it not look like just a Math problem.

I have a huge set of N-dimensional points (tens of millions; N is close to 100).

I need to map these points to a single dimension while preserving spatial locality. I want to use [Hilbert space-filling curve][1] to do it.

For each point I want to pick the closest point on the curve. The Hilbert value of the point (curve length from the start of curve to the picked point) is the single dimension value I seek.

Computation does not have to be instant, but I expect it to be no more than several hours 
on decent modern home PC hardware.

Any suggestions on implementation? Are there any libraries that would help me? (Language does not matter much.)

How to check if an email address exists without sending an email?

I am using SmtpClient to send an email with an attachment.
However for a certain batch we need to somehow save the MailMessage instead of sending them.
We are then thinking/hoping to manually upload the messages to the users drafts folder.

Is it possible to save these messages with the attachment intact (impossible, I would have thought). Or alternatively upload the messages to a folder in the users account?

If anyone has any experience of this, I&#39;d much appreciate a bit of help or a pointer.


How can I save an email instead of sending when using SmtpClient?

I am trying to launch an Intent to send an email. All of that works, but when I try to actually send the email a couple &#39;weird&#39; things happen.

So if I launch using the Gmail menu context It shows the attachment, lets me type who the email is to, and edit the body &amp; subject. No big deal. I hit send, and it sends. The only thing is the attachment does NOT get sent.

So. I figured, why not try it w/ the Email menu context (for my backup email account on my phone). It shows the attachment, but no text at all in the body or subject. When I send it, the attachment sends correctly. That would lead me to believe something is quite wrong. Do I need a new permission in the Manifest launch an intent to send email w/ attachment? What am I doing wrong?

Trying to attach a file from SD Card to email

I&#39;m working on a site that will send out a significant number of emails. I want to set up both header and footer text, or maybe even templates to allow the users to easily edit these emails if they need to.

If I embed the HTML inside C# string literals, it&#39;s ugly and they would have to worry about escaping.  Including flat files for the header and footer might work, but something about it just doesn&#39;t feel right.

What would be ideal what be to use a `.ASPX` page as a template somehow, then just tell my code to serve that page, and use the HTML returned for the email.

Is there a nice and easy way to do this? Is there a better way to go about solving this problem?

I added an answer that enables you to use a standard .aspx page as the email template.  Just replace all the variables like you normally would, use databinding, etc.  Then just capture the output of the page, and voila!  You have your HTML email!

**UPDATED WITH CAVEAT!!!:**  
I was using the MailDefinition class on some aspx pages just fine, but when trying to use this class during a server process that was running, it failed.  I believe it was because the MailDefinition.CreateMailMessage() method requires a valid control to reference, even though it doesn&#39;t always do something.  Because of this, I would recommend my approach using an aspx page, or Mun&#39;s approach using an ascx page, which seems a little better.

I&#39;ve read that techniques like captcha, 1+1=? stuff work well, but they also present an extra step impeding the free quick use of the application (I&#39;m not looking for anything like that please).

However, I&#39;m certain a script can be configured to trace that form field id and simply not fill it.

I want visitors to be able to click on (or copy) an email address directly on my webpage. However, if I could make it (a little bit) harder for bots and other crawlers to get said email address and register it in a spam list, it would be awesome.

I found different ways of doing this (i.e. encoding mailto HTML links), either with JavaScript or in pure HTML, but what do you guys recommend ? The JavaScript techniques seem more complicated, but this may potentially affect users that have it turned off, and legit crawlers like Google.

But my main concerns are:

 - the complete discrepancy in email address and domain between the From and Reply-To fields might make spam or phishing filters more eager to flag the emails
