Move the function outside the loop:

I have been working on an Android app using Phonegap and now would like to make it so when the app is closed it can still execute the java/js code in the app. So I understand I need to create a service. If I create a service plugin on phonegap can I still execute the javascript code or only the java?

Has anyone does something like this? I found this discussion but did not seem to work: http://groups.google.com/group/phonegap/browse_thread/thread/722b0e796baa7fc6
So that is all I have right now.

Before I turn to developing it native if I can&#39;t figure it out thought I would ask if anyone has done this before. I can&#39;t seem to find any of the phonegap plugins that do something similar. 

EDIT: I have got an app that executes Java code as a service. However when it calls sendjavascript it does not work. So is there a way to have the javascript code running in the background as well when an app is closed with phonegap?

I&#39;ve been experimenting with EC2 for a couple days and have been banging my head against simply even being able to access the sample site I&#39;ve hosted. The stack is Rails 3.1.3 with Thin and Nginx. 

I&#39;ve tried several different configurations and finally ended up running the Nginx auto install script, which does return a webpage when I do a curl http://ec2-107-20-143-179.compute-1.amazonaws.com/. However, when I point my browser there, it hangs forever before saying the page cannot be found.

I have assigned an Elastic IP address, and I&#39;ve enabled HTTP access via port 80. 

I don&#39;t much experience with the sysadmin side and I&#39;m basically stumped at this point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am new to JavaScript/jQuery and I&#39;ve been learning how to make functions. A lot of functions have cropped up with (e) in brackets. Let me show you what I mean:

    $(this).click(function(e) {
        // does something
    });

It always appears that the function doesn&#39;t even use the value of (e), so why is it there so often?

I am just starting to use the JavaScript ternary operator to replace simple if/else statements. I have done so successfully in several places.  I was surprised when I successfully made something else work when I thought for sure it wouldn&#39;t, but I tried anyway.

Here&#39;s the original statement:

Here&#39;s the same function using the ternary operator:

I was surprised because all of the examples I saw being used were merely setting variables like this:

    x = (1 &lt; 2) ? true : false;

My question is whether this is &quot;normal&quot; use and will it work in most versions of JavaScript? Where will it fail?  Are there other less obvious uses for it?

JavaScript ternary operator example with functions

I have searched high and low for documentation on this, but I just cannot find anything anywhere.

I am using Aloha and want to use their sidebar prototype to create a new side bar of my own attached to other plugin functionality.

Their sidebar.js starts off with this, but I can&#39;t for the life of me find any documentation that explains what it means.

The basic requirement I have is that it must fire an event(stopping the quiz) if the user changes tabs or opens a news window even without minimizing their browser, i.e if the person is attempting to see the answer from some other window/tab. How can I do that?&lt;br&gt;

**Note :** Try to avoid including a bleeding edge HTML5 feature in your answer because I want the feature to be supported by all major browsers currently.

Any decent lint tool (jslint, jshint or built in IDE) will tell warning - `duplicate declaration of variable i`. This can be solved by using variable with another name (`k`, `j`) or moving declaration to the top:

	var i; // iterator
	for (i=0; i&lt;100; i++) {}
	for (i=0; i&lt;500; i++) {}

I am not fond of both variants - I don&#39;t make declarations at the top usually (and even if I did I wouldn&#39;t want see there helper variables - `i`, `j`, `k`) and really nothing bad is going on in those examples to change variables&#39; names for.

Though I do want a huge warning in case I write something like this:

	for (var i=0; i&lt;100; i++) {
		for (var i=0; i&lt;500; i++) {} // now that&#39;s bad
	}

What&#39;s your approach to such cases?

I run `JSlint` and saw errors like that:

`foo` is a function defined in another `JavaScript` file `foo.js`. As I understand there is no &quot;import / require&quot; directives in `JavaScript` to reference the `foo` function defined in another source file.

How to split a long regular expression into multiple lines in JavaScript?

I am writing JS UT for my NodeJS code. I am using [Chai][1] as the assertion library, and I prefer the *should* syntax. I also use *jslint* to check the JS file syntax, even the JS files for UT.

Now I have a problem with *jslint* and *Chai*. In *Chai*, you can use:

    myvalue.should.be.true;

But *jslint* give me:

    #1 Expected an assignment or function call and instead saw an expression.

I know *jslint* comes with many options, but I just cannot find the right one to turn off this check.
