Is there any way to define different mock-expects for different input arguments? For example, I have database layer class called DB. The code SEEMS to work fine, but I get this warning:

    Warning: Cannot use a scalar value as an array in line X, Y, Z (the line with: $final[$id][0] = 3, and the next 2).

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

We all know how **bad Singletons** are because they hide dependencies and for [other reasons](http://misko.hevery.com/2008/08/17/singletons-are-pathological-liars/).

But in a framework, there could be many objects that need to be instantiated only once and called **from everywhere** (logger, db etc).

To solve this problem I have been told to use a so called &quot;Objects Manager&quot;  (or [Service Container](http://symfony.com/doc/current/book/service_container.html) like symfony) that internally stores every reference to Services (logger etc).

But why isn&#39;t a Service Provider as bad as a pure Singleton? 

Service provider hides dependencies too and they just wrap out the creation of the first istance.  So I am really struggling to understand why we should use a service provider instead of singletons.


PS. I know that to not hide dependencies I should use DI (as stated by Misko)

DI + Singleton solves the problem:

that&#39;s pretty smart even if this doesn&#39;t solve at all every problems.

and I set:

in my application controller before each action.

However, it doesn&#39;t help (I guess because these settings affects only dates that are stored in the database).

I have a form that passes two dates (start and finish) to a PHP script that will add those to a DB. I am having problems validating this. I keep getting the following errors 

**A non well formed numeric value encountered**

This is when I use the following 

    date(&quot;d&quot;,$_GET[&#39;start_date&#39;]);

But when I use the **strtotime()** function as advised by many sites I get a unix timestamp date of 1/1/1970.
Any ideas how I can get the correct date?
