So I am trying to figure out how to take a range of numbers and scale the values down to fit a range.  The reason for wanting to do this is that I am trying to draw ellipses in a java swing jpanel.  I want the height and width of each ellipse to be in a range of say 1-30.  I have methods that find the minimum and maximum values from my data set, but I won&#39;t have the min and max until runtime.  Is there an easy way to do this?

I have this little crazy method that converts BigDecimal values into nice and readable Strings.

    private String formatBigDecimal(BigDecimal bd){
        DecimalFormat df = new DecimalFormat();
        df.setMinimumFractionDigits(3);
        df.setMaximumFractionDigits(3);
        df.setMinimumIntegerDigits(1);
        df.setMaximumIntegerDigits(3);
        df.setGroupingSize(20);
        return df.format(bd);
    }

It however, also produces a so called grouping separator `&quot;,&quot;` that makes all my values come out like this:

    xxx,xxx

I do need the separator to be a dot or a point and not a comma. 
Does anybody have a clue of how to accomplish this little feat?

I have read [this][1] and in particular [this][2] to death now but I cannot find a way to get this done.
Am I approaching this the wrong way? Is there a much more elegant way of doing this? Maybe even a solution that accounts for different local number representations, since the comma would be perfect by European standards.

Is there a way to get the UTC timestamp by specifying the date? What I would expect:

    datetime(2008, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0)

should result in

     1199145600

Creating a naive datetime object means that there is no time zone information. If I look at the documentation for datetime.utcfromtimestamp, creating a UTC timestamp means leaving out the time zone information. So I would guess, that creating a naive datetime object (like I did) would result in a UTC timestamp. However:

    then = datetime(2008, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0)
    datetime.utcfromtimestamp(float(then.strftime(&#39;%s&#39;)))
results in

    2007-12-31 23:00:00

Is there still any hidden time zone information in the datetime object? What am I doing wrong?

Everything seems to be working OK (date columns created as expected) when using annotations :

    private LocalDate myDate; 

Are their any known problems with using these versions together ?

Well turns out the columns get created but unable to populate with any data :

*Handler processing failed; nested exception is java.lang.AbstractMethodError: org.joda.time.contrib.hibernate.PersistentLocalDateTime.nullSafeSet*

**They are incompatible, and I should be using [usertype][2].** See answer below.
