I&#39;ve been running STS 2.3.2 on a MacBook Pro for a few days now. I&#39;m finding the performance to be significantly slower than any other build of Eclipse I&#39;ve used. For example, switching from one tab to another can take up to 4 seconds.

I tried turning off much of the validation, and increasing the memory, but it&#39;s not making a difference.

Are others having similar experiences?

Why is SpringSource Tool Suite (STS) so slow? And how can I fix it?

I can&#39;t seem to get any consistent info on this. Different sources appear to say different things and the venerable php.net itself (*appears*) not to explicitly state this - although, I must admit, I only had a quick look.

In cases where I am passing around &#39;heavy&#39; objects, I need to pass by reference, but I don&#39;t want to keep typing:

    function foo(TypeName&amp; $obj)

if I can get away with simply

    function foo(TypeName $obj)

So what does the standard say?

In 2010, would you serve URLs containing UTF-8 characters in a large web portal?

Unicode characters are forbidden as per the RFC on URLs (see [here][1]). They would have to be percent encoded to be standards compliant.

My main point, though, is serving the unencoded characters for the sole purpose of having nice-looking URLs, so percent encoding is out. 

All major browsers seem to be parsing those URLs okay no matter what the RFC says. My general impression, though, is that it gets very shaky when leaving the domain of web browsers:

  * URLs getting copy+pasted into text files, E-Mails, even Web sites with a different encoding 
  * HTTP Client libraries 
  * Exotic browsers, RSS readers
  
Is my impression correct that trouble is to be expected here, and thus it&#39;s not a practical solution (yet) if you&#39;re serving a non-technical audience and it&#39;s important that all your links work properly even if quoted and passed on?

Is there some magic way of serving nice-looking URLs in HTML

that can be copy+pasted with the special characters intact, but work correctly when re-used in older clients?

Notice the doubled question mark at the beginning of the query string:

My browser didn&#39;t seem to have any trouble with it, and running a quick bookmarklet:

    javascript:alert(document.location.search);

just gave me the query string shown above.

Is this a valid URL? The reason I&#39;m being so pedantic (assuming that I am) is because I need to parse URLs like this for query parameters, and supporting doubled question marks would require some changes to my code. Obviously if they&#39;re in the wild, I&#39;ll need to support them; I&#39;m mainly curious if it&#39;s my fault for not adhering to URL standards exactly, or if it&#39;s in fact a non-standard URL.

I have set up my coldfusion application to have dynamic urls on the page, such as 

    www.musicExplained/index.cfm/artist/:VariableName

However my variable names will sometimes contain slashes, such as 

    www.musicExplained/index.cfm/artist/GZA/Genius

This is causing a problem, because my application presumes that the slash in the variable name represents a different section of the website, the artists albums. So the URL will fail.

I am wondering if there is anyway to prevent this from happening? Do I need to use a function that replaces slashes in the variable names with another character?

How do I remove the parent element and all the respective nodes using plain JavaScript? I&#39;m not using jQuery or any other library.

How to remove the parent element using plain Javascript

Okay so I haven&#39;t been able to find a question with an answer yet, so I decided to make my own. 

I am trying to create a 100% fluid layout, which technically I have done.

BUT, what I want to do now, is to make the page 100% in HEIGHT... But I don&#39;t want the page to scroll I want the inner DIV to scroll. 

So I believe in short I want it to detect the height of the viewport screen, go 100%, and then IF content is longer then the screen, scroll the specific DIV, NOT the page.

I hope this makes sense.

It would be incredibly useful to be able to temporarily convert a regular element into a `canvas`. For example, say I have a styled `div` that I want to flip. I want to dynamically create a canvas, &quot;render&quot; the `HTMLElement` into the canvas, hide the original element and animate the canvas.

Can it be done?

I have a Javascript function that accepts a list of HTML nodes, but it expects a Javascript array (it runs some Array methods on that) and I want to feed it the output of `Document.getElementsByTagName` that returns a DOM node list.

Initially I thought of using something simple like:

    Array.prototype.slice.call(list,0)

And that works fine in all browsers, except of course Internet Explorer which returns the error &quot;JScript object expected&quot;, as apparently the DOM node list returned by `Document.getElement*` methods is not a JScript object enough to be the target of a function call.

Caveats: I don&#39;t mind writing Internet Explorer specific code, but I&#39;m not allowed to use any Javascript libraries such as JQuery because I&#39;m writing a widget to be embedded into 3rd party web site, and I cannot load external libraries that will create conflict for the clients.

My last ditch effort is to iterate over the DOM node list and create an array myself, but is there a nicer way to do that?
