First, the code creates a new layout params by specifying the height and width. The `addRule` method adds the equivalent of the xml properly `android:layout_below`. Then you just call `View#setLayoutParams` on the view you want to have those params. 

Alternatively you can use the views current layout parameters and modify them:

    RelativeLayout.LayoutParams params = (RelativeLayout.LayoutParams) viewToLayout.getLayoutParams();
    params.addRule(RelativeLayout.BELOW, R.id.below_id);


While @jackofallcode answer is correct, it can be written in one line:

I&#39;ve a `RelativeLayout` thus:

    &lt;RelativeLayout&gt;
    &lt;TextView1/&gt;
    &lt;TextView2/&gt; // &lt;-- View.VISIBLE OR View.GONE
    &lt;TextView3/&gt;
    &lt;TextView4/&gt;
    &lt;/RelativeLayout&gt;

Each `TextView` is anchored below the previous `TextView` with `android:layout_below`.

The problem is that TextView2 may or may not be there (either `View.VISIBLE` or `View.GONE`); if it&#39;s `View.VISIBLE`, then all is fine, but if it&#39;s `View.GONE`, then TextView3 ends up being rendered on top of TextView1.

I&#39;ve tried various ways to fix this, but each time am caught out by `RelativeLayout`&#39;s &#39;you cannot reference an id before it&#39;s defined&#39; rule.

I&#39;m hoping that I&#39;m missing something obvious here. 

Issue with RelativeLayout when View visibility is View.GONE

While working on a simple program in Android, I mistakenly closed LogCat window and I want to know how to show it again.

I have an issue with the following error in Android:

It appears to happen when I try to update a Textview in my Activity, the call to update the TextView is from within my Activity but I still get the above error.

I have it like this:

onCreate()
-sets up the buttons and the text view.

onStateChange() - a listener for notifications about state changes, when this gets notification if changes the TextView to say some different text.

When I get notification of a new text I try to change the TextView as so:

    ((TextView)findViewById(R.id.title)).setText(&quot;Some Text&quot;);

But I get the above Error.

From googling it, it appears I should use a handler to change the TextView or maybe use AsyncTask?

Could anyone explain which one would be better to use and why?

I&#39;m trying to add a little space between lines to my TextViews using `android:lineSpacingMultiplier`
from the [documentation][1]:

As I&#39;m using this in a few different TextViews I would like to add a global dimension/value to my resources, but I don&#39;t know which tag to use, if it even exists.

The issue I&#39;m running into is that I want the `follow_button` to be below both the `page_desc` as well as the `page_image`. Sometimes the `page_desc` content will have a height bigger than the size of the image, sometimes not. The issue is that if I set the `follow_button` below either the image or the description, then the other one will get clipped. Is there an efficient / effective way to ensure that the image or `page_desc` are always visible and above the button?
