I am trying to pass whole structure from client to server or vice-versa. Let us assume my structure as follows

    struct temp {
      int a;
      char b;
    }

I am using **sendto** and sending the address of the structure variable and receiving it on the other side using the **recvfrom** function. But I am not able to get the original data sent on the receiving end. In sendto function I am saving the received data into variable of type struct temp.

    n = sendto(sock, &amp;pkt, sizeof(struct temp), 0, &amp;server, length);
    n = recvfrom(sock, &amp;pkt, sizeof(struct temp), 0, (struct sockaddr *)&amp;from,&amp;fromlen);

Where pkt is the variable of type struct temp. 

Eventhough I am receiving 8bytes of data but if I try to print it is simply showing garbage values. Any help for a fix on it ?

**NOTE:** **No third party Libraries have to be used.**

***EDIT1:** I am really new to this serialization concept .. But without doing serialization cant I send a structure via sockets ?*

***EDIT2:** When I try to send a string or an integer variable using the **sendto** and **recvfrom** functions I am receiving the data properly at receiver end. Why not in the case of a structure?  If I don&#39;t have to use serializing function then should I send each and every member of the structure individually? This really is not a suitable solution since if there are &#39;n&#39; number of members then there are &#39;n&#39; number of lines of code added just to send or receive data.*

If getters and setters are ever doing more than just the simple get/set, I can figure this one out very quickly, but I&#39;m not 100% clear on how:

is any worse than:

Whereas the former takes a lot less boilerplate code.

Are there any patterns or best practices that can be used to simplify changing configuration profiles for java web applications across multiple environments. e.g. JDBC URLs, SOAP end-points, etc.  

As a bit of background to help clarify my question, I work with several large java web applications that during any given release cycle move through 6 different environments; development, integration, QA, performance and eventually get deployed to multiple production servers. In each environment, configuration needs to change. Right now, most configuration changes for each deployment are done manually which is both time consuming and open to errors.  
Is there any way to take the manual intervention out of this process?

Reading the very good Android manuals, they tell me that I should start Android using the following command:

I&#39;m trying to play video&#39;s on Android, by launching an intent.
The code I&#39;m using is:

    tostart = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
    tostart.setDataAndType(Uri.parse(movieurl), &quot;video/*&quot;);
    startActivity(tostart); 

This works on most phones, but not on the **HTC Hero**. It seems to load a bit different video player. This does play the first video thrown at it. However, every video after that it doesn&#39;t respond. (it keeps in some loop).

If I add an explicit 

    tostart.setClassName(&quot;com.htc.album&quot;,&quot;com.htc.album.ViewVideo&quot;);

(before the startactivity) it does work on the **HTC Hero**. However, since this is a **HTC** specific call, I can&#39;t run this code on other phones (such as the **G1**).
On the **G1**, this works:

    tostart.setClassName(&quot;com.android.camera&quot;,&quot;com.android.camera.MovieView&quot;); //g1 version

But this intent is missing from the hero.
Does anybody know a list of intents/classnames that should be supported by all Android devices? Or a specific one to launch a video?

Android intent for playing video?

I&#39;ve a HTTP communication to a webserver requesting JSON data. I&#39;d like compress this data stream with `Content-Encoding: gzip`. Is there a way I can set `Accept-Encoding: gzip` in my HttpClient? The search for `gzip` in the Android References doesn&#39;t show up anything related to HTTP, as you can see [here][1].

I have to concatenate these two strings from my resource/value files:

I do it this way :

But the spaces at the end of the first string and at the beginning of the second string
have disappeared (when the Toast is shown) ...

What should I do ?
