What is the difference between doing (after `mkdir repo` and `cd repo`):

    git init
    git remote add origin git://github.com/cmcculloh/repo.git
    git fetch --all
    git pull origin master


and

    git clone git://github.com/cmcculloh/repo.git


I mean, obviously one is shorter, but other than that are they basically doing the same thing?

I have started collaborating with a few friends on a project &amp; they use the heroku git repository.

I cloned the repository a few days ago and they have since made some changes so I am trying to get the latest updates

I ran the `git pull --rebase` command as stated here(Is this the right way to do it?): https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/sharing#merging-code-changes

I get the following error:

    $ git pull --rebase
    Cannot pull with rebase: You have unstaged changes.
    Please commit or stash them.


My guess is that I messed around with the code and now it wants me to either commit or discard(is that what does stash means?) the changes. Is this what is happening? If this is the case I would like to discard any changes I might have made and just get the updated code from the git repository. 

Any idea of what I can do?

I have a project with multiple branches. I&#39;ve been pushing them to [GitHub][1], and now that someone else is working on the project I need to pull their branches from GitHub. It works fine in master. But say that someone created a branch `xyz`. How can I pull branch `xyz` from GitHub and merge it into branch `xyz` on my `localhost`?

I want to have my local and remote repositories always in sync in terms of branches.

After a Pull Request review on GitHub, I merge and remove my branch there (remote).
How could I fetch this information in my local repository and get Git to remove my local version of the branch as well?

I&#39;m moving a build process to use mercurial and want to get the working directory back to the state of the tip revision. Earlier runs of the build process will have modified some files and added some files that I don&#39;t want to commit, so I have local changes and files that aren&#39;t added to the repository. 

What&#39;s the easiest way to discard all that and get a clean working directory that has the latest revision?

Currently I&#39;m doing this: 

    hg revert --all
    &lt;build command here to delete the contents of the working directory, except the .hg folder.&gt;
    hg pull
    hg update -r MY_BRANCH

but it seems like there should be a simpler way.

I want to do the equivalent of deleting the repo, doing a fresh clone, and an update. But the repo is too big for that to be fast enough.


Discard all and get clean copy of latest revision?

I have a branch called &quot;dmgr2&quot; in development, and I want to pull from the master branch (live site) and incorporate all the changes into my development branch. Is there a better way to do this?

Myself and one other developer had been merging and pushing our work to a non-master branch called toolwork. That way, we didn&#39;t impact the rest of the team. My topic branch was called DPM-93 and my git workflow was this.

    # do some work
    git checkout DPM-93
    git commit -m &quot;did some work&quot;

    # catch up
    git checkout toolwork
    git pull origin toolwork

    # rebase my topic branch
    git checkout DPM-93
    git rebase toolwork

    # merge and push my changes
    git checkout toolwork
    git merge --no-ff DPM-93
    git push origin toolwork

That was mostly working fine until I accidently issued these git commands

    git checkout toolwork
    git pull origin master

At that point, a bunch of new stuff showed up in branch toolwork and I&#39;m not sure how to get rid of it short of deleting my workspace and re-cloning from the repo.

Is there any way to back this out to the state before the pull?

Let me describe my situation:

Mr Blond and Mr Orange are working on branch A that branches out of the master branch on commit M1. Branch A has 2 commits: A1 and A2.

    M1

Meanwhile, Mr Orange committed and pushed 2 more commits on the master branch, M2 and M3.

    M1  - M2 - M3
       \
        \
         A1 - A2

Mr Blond pulls from the remote, and after a while decides to rebase onto the master branch:

    M1  - M2 - M3
       \         \
        \         \
         A1 - A2   A1` - A2`

Now A1\` and A2\` are the rebased commits that exist locally at Mr blond&#39;s, and A1 and A2 exist remotely. Mr Blond pushes his commits, using **-f** to force his changes and &quot;rewrite&quot; history. Now the remote repository looks like this:

    M1  - M2 - M3
                 \
                  \
                   A1` - A2`

But Mr. Orange worked on the A branch as well. His local repository still looks like this:

    M1  - M2 - M3
       \
        \
         A1 - A2

What does Mr. Orange need to do in order to be synchronized with A branch in the remote repository?

A normal pull won&#39;t work. Will **pull -f** force the changes from the remote locally? I know that deleting the local version of A and bringing it again from the remote repository will do the trick but that doesn&#39;t seem to be a good way to achieve that.

Git: Pulling a rebased branch

I&#39;d like to script, preferably in rake, the following actions into a single command:

1. Get the version of my local git repository.
2. Git pull the latest code.
3. Git diff from the version I extracted in step #1 to what is now in my local repository.

I have a newbie question about Git:

I need to move back and forth in a history of a branch.
That means, I need to get all the files to the state they were in in some old revision, and then I need to get back to the latest state in the repository. I don&#39;t need to commit.

 With SVN, it would be

    svn up -r800

to get to revision 800, and 

    svn up

to get in sync with the repository.

I know the hash of the commit I want to get back to, so I tried

    git reset &lt;hash&gt;

which seems to get me there. But then I tried

    git pull

but that complains about conflicts.

So what&#39;s the proper way to move through the history of the branch?

I&#39;m thinking in terms of SVN, so don&#39;t hezitate to point me to some nice tutorial. Note that I&#39;ve already checked http://git.or.cz/course/svn.html and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dhZ9BXQgc4 .

I didn&#39;t want to lose some information after a `git pull`, so I did a `git fetch` before. Where can I read the new modifications after a `git fetch`? I went to the `FETCH_HEAD` file, but there was nothing more than a big number.
