Trying to get past a class cast exception here:

    FooClass fooClass = (FooClass ) unmarshaller.unmarshal(inputStream);

throws this exception:

    java.lang.ClassCastException: javax.xml.bind.JAXBElement


I don&#39;t understand this - as the class was generated by the xjc.bat tool - and the classes it generated I have not altered at all - so there should be no casting problems here - the unmarshaller should really be giving me back a class that CAN be cast to FooClass.

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Using JAXB and XJC I&#39;d like to generate two class files:

I&#39;ve looked at some of the [documentation][1] for mapping interfaces but this appears to only be for the situation when you already have java classes that you want to map to a DOM.

Also, I&#39;ve tried to use this [external plugin][2] but it doesn&#39;t appear to work. Here is my xjb binding file:

I&#39;ve tried using the [Interface Insertion][3] plugin but for some reason can&#39;t get it to work. This is how I&#39;m calling xjc yet it is as if the plugin jar is not getting picked up from the classpath:

I don&#39;t understand why there is an enclosing &lt;code&gt;distribution&lt;/code&gt; tag there. I wanted to remove it with &lt;code&gt;.rootUnwrapping(true)&lt;/code&gt; in the context resolver, but apparently that only removes another enclosing tag. This is the output with &lt;code&gt;.rootUnwrapping(false)&lt;/code&gt;:

I tried to return a &lt;code&gt;List&amp;lt;XMLDistribution&amp;gt;&lt;/code&gt;, a &lt;code&gt;XMLDistributionList&lt;/code&gt; (wrapper around a list), a &lt;code&gt;XMLDistribution[]&lt;/code&gt;, but I couldn&#39;t find a way to get a simple JSON array of distributions in my required format.

I also tried the other notations returned by &lt;code&gt;JSONConfiguration.natural()&lt;/code&gt;, &lt;code&gt;JSONConfiguration.mappedJettison()&lt;/code&gt;, etc, and couldn&#39;t get anything resembling what I need.

Does anyone know if it is possible to configure JAXB to do this?

How can I customize serialization of a list of JAXB objects to JSON?

This question is for anyone who&#39;s ever tested the &quot;Find leaks&quot; button in the Tomcat manager and got some results like this:

&gt; The following web applications were stopped (reloaded, undeployed), but their classes from previous runs are still loaded in memory, thus causing a memory leak (use a profiler to confirm): &lt;br&gt;
&gt; /leaky-app-name

I&#39;m assuming this has something to do with that &quot;Perm Gen space&quot; error you often get with frequent redeployments.

So what I&#39;m seeing in jconsole when I deploy is that my loaded classes goes from about 2k to 5k. Then you would think an undeployment should drop them back down to 2k but they remain at 5k.

I&#39;ve also tried using the following JVM options: 

`-XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled`

I did see VERY minor dips in the amount of Perm Gen space used but not what I expected and the loaded class counts did not drop.

So is there a way to configure Tomcat or design your app to unload better on an undeployment? Or are we stuck with restarting the server after some major debugging sessions?

Thanks to celias&#39; answer I decided to do a little more digging and I think I determined the culprit to be in my application thanks to CXF, Spring and JAXB.

After I learned how to profile a Java application, I pointed the profiler at Tomcat and took some heap dumps and snapshots to see what the objects and classes looked like in memory. I discovered that some of the enumerations from my XML schema used in my CXF/JAXB (wsdl2java) generated classes were lingering after an undeployment. According to my heap dump it looks like the objects were tied to a Map. Disclaimer: I admit I&#39;m still a little green with profiling and tracing an object&#39;s call tree can be challenging in Java.

Also I should mention that I didn&#39;t even invoke the service, just deployed then undeployed it. The objects themselves appeared to be loaded via reflection initiated from Spring on deployment. I believe I followed the convention for setting up a CXF service in Spring. So I&#39;m not 100% sure if this is Spring/CXF, JAXB, or reflection&#39;s fault.

As a side note: the application in question is a web service using Spring/CXF and the XML happens to be a rather complex schema (an extension of [NIEM][1]).

Is there a way to avoid undeployment memory leaks in Tomcat?

It&#39;s right there, in the package that it should be indexing. Still, when I call

    JAXBContext jc = JAXBContext.newInstance(&quot;my.package.name&quot;);

I get a JAXBException saying that 

&gt; &quot;my.package.name&quot; doesnt contain ObjectFactory.class or jaxb.index

although it does contain both.

What does work, but isn&#39;t quite what I want, is

    JAXBContext jc = JAXBContext.newInstance(my.package.name.SomeClass.class);

This question from various other people appears on quite some mailing lists and forums but seemingly doesn&#39;t get answers.

I&#39;m running this on OpenJDK 6, so I got the source packages and stepped my debugger into the library. It starts by looking for jaxb.properties, then looks for system properties and failing to find either, it tries to create the default context using com.sun.internal.xml.bind.v2.ContextFactory. In there, the Exception gets thrown (inside `ContextFactor.createContext(String ClassLoader, Map)`), but I can&#39;t see what&#39;s going on because the source isn&#39;t here.

**ETA**:

Judging from the source code for ContentFactory, I found [here][1], this is probably the piece of code that fails to work as intended:

Why can&#39;t JAXB find my jaxb.index when running inside Apache Felix?

In the code above i am getting the result to the console (I mean XML is getting printed on the console). I want to get this XML to a string. I am not getting which argument I should pass to the marshal method to get XML String in a String variable instead of printing it on the console. Anybody having any idea please share.

Which artifacts should I use for JAXB RI in my Maven project?

I need to validate my JAXB objects before marshalling to an XML file.  Prior to JAXB 2.0, one could use a javax.xml.bind.Validator.  But that has been deprecated so I&#39;m trying to figure out the proper way of doing this.  I&#39;m familiar with validating at marshall time but in my case I just want to know if its valid.  I suppose I could marshall to a temp file or memory and throw it away but wondering if there is a more elegant solution.

I want to note out something. I changed all List to ArrayList, and then it compiled. The reason why I say compiled and not worked is because it behaves strange. I get an Object of type: 
RelationServiceStub.ArrayList
but the object has no get methods or does not behave as a List either. I also tried to cast it to a List but that didnt work.

Note that this is after I have used Axis 2 and wsdl2java So yes, now it compiles, but I dont know how to get the data out.

I&#39;m trying to create a web service client using CXF to consume a WCF web service.
When I use wsdl2java it generates objects with JAXBElement&lt;String&gt; types instead of String.

I read about using a jaxb bindings.xml file to set generateElementProperty=&quot;false&quot; to try to fix the problem, but the web service I&#39;m consuming contains 7 imported schemas.

How do I prevent JAXBElement&lt;String&gt; from being generated in a CXF Web Service client?

I have some code that uses JAXB API classes which have been provided as a part of the JDK in Java 6/7/8.  When I run the same code with Java 9, at runtime I get errors indicating that JAXB classes can not be found.

The JAXB classes have been provided as a part of the JDK since Java 6, so why can Java 9 no longer find these classes?

ok now i don&#39;t have any error, but when i check my object, timeSeries is null...

so maybe jaxb seem to have problem with flx?

Jaxb, Class has two properties of the same name

The question is a bit theoretical, what is the cost of creating JAXB context, marshaller and unmarshaller?

I&#39;ve found that my code could benefit from keeping the same JAXB context and possibly the same marshaller for all marshaling operations rather than creating context and marshaller on each marshaling.

So what is the cost of creating JAXB context and marshaller/unmarshaller? Is it okay to create context+marshaller for each marshaling operation or it&#39;s better to avoid it?

How do I instantiate a JAXBElement&lt;String&gt; object?

I have determined that two [JAXB][1] plugins for [Maven][2] 2 exist, with some different configurations. 

The one is from Sun: http://jaxb.dev.java.net/jaxb-maven2-plugin/, the other from Mojohaus: http://mojohaus.org/jaxb2-maven-plugin/

Which of these two plugins can be recommended?

Difference of Maven JAXB plugins

I&#39;m a total newbie with XML. I&#39;m doing a Java EE project REST implementation and we return a lot of XML. With this we decided to use JAXB. So far, we manually coded the Models for the XML.

But there are already these complex structures we don&#39;t know how to code. We&#39;ve read about generating classes from XSD. We do have an XSD.

My questions:

1.) I&#39;ve read about XJC, where can I find it? 

2.) Do we have to install the whole JAXB? (so what we used so far? isn&#39;t this JAXB?)

**Is there anything simpler, like some API call that I have overlooked?** 

Converting between a standard XML date/time and a Java date object seems like a pretty routine task and I&#39;m surprised that I have to write this code at all.

Any suggestions?


**NOTES:**
My JAXB classes are autogenerated from a schema. The build process on my project does not allow for me to make manual changes to the generated classes. The xs:dateTime elements are being generated by XJC as XMLGregorianCalendar in the JAXB classes. The schema is extended and tweaked periodically, so I am allowed to make limited changes to the schema XSD file.

**UPDATE ON SOLUTION:** 
The solution proposed by Blaise has allowed me to take XMLGregorianCalendar out of the mix and deal with java.util.Calendar objects instead. By adding a JAXB binding clause at the top of my schema file, XJC is able to generate more appropriate mappings for xs:dateTime in my JAXB classes. Here are some snippets that show the modifications in my XSD file.

Since the XML xs:dateTime field also stores timezone, it might be better for me to work with Calendar instead of Date anyway since Calendar objects have a pretty good API for working with locales and timezones. In any case, I&#39;m much happier to deal with Calendar objects instead of XMLGregorianCalendar. No need for the conversion methods that I listed above anymore. I didn&#39;t get all the way to java.util.Date, but close enough!

Simple conversion between java.util.Date and XMLGregorianCalendar

I&#39;m new to using JAXB, and I used JAXB 2.1.3&#39;s xjc to generate a set of classes from my XML Schema. In addition to generating a class for each element in my schema, it created an ObjectFactory class.

There doesn&#39;t seem to be anything stopping me from instantiating the elements directly, e.g.

    MyElement element = new MyElement();

whereas tutorials seem to prefer

    MyElement element = new ObjectFactory().createMyElement();

If I look into ObjectFactory.java, I see:

        return new MyElement();
    }

so what&#39;s the deal? Why should I even bother keeping the ObjectFactory class around? I assume it will also be overwritten if I were to re-compile from an altered schema.

Yes, yes I know that lots of questions were asked about this topic. But I still cannot find the solution to my problem. I have a property annotated Java object. For example Customer, [like in this example][1]. And I want a String representation of it. Google reccomends using JAXB for such purposes. But in all examples created XML file is printed to file or console, like this:

What happened:
Maven executes the the first plugin. Then deletes the target folder and creates the second package, which then is visible.

I tried to set &lt;generatePackage&gt;target/somedir1&lt;/generatePackage&gt; for the first configuration and &lt;generatePackage&gt;target/somedir2&lt;/generatePackage&gt; for the second configuration. But the behavior does not not change? Any ideas? I do not want to generate the packages directly in the src/main/java folder, because these packages are genereated and should not be mixed with manual created classes.

When JAXB marshals a date object (`XMLGregorianCalendar`) into an xsd:dateTime element. How can you specify the format of the resulting XML?

For example:

JAXB: How to ignore namespace during unmarshalling XML document?

I want the serialized XML output from my Java class to honor the ordering of the properties in the Java class.

It seems that JAXB orders alphabetically.

I can override this by using `@XmlType` with *propOrder* and specifying ALL of the properties, but I have a class with many properties and these are not yet finalized.

I read that specifying an empty *propOrder* would do it but it don&#39;t.

The schema is based on a set of legacy XML files, and includes this snippet:

JAXB: How to marshal objects in lists?

The question is about JAXB Map marshalling - there is plenty of examples on how to marhsall a Map into a structure like follows:

        &lt;value&gt; VALUE &lt;/value&gt;
      &lt;/entry&gt;
      &lt;entry&gt;

      &lt;/entry&gt;
      &lt;entry&gt;
      ...
    &lt;/map&gt;

In fact, this is natively supported by JAXB. What I need, however, is the XML where key is the element name, and value is its content:

      &lt;key&gt; VALUE &lt;/key&gt;
      &lt;key2&gt; VALUE2 &lt;/key2&gt;
     ...
    &lt;/map&gt;

I didn&#39;t succeed implementing my Map adapter the way it is recommended by JAXB developers ([https://jaxb.dev.java.net/guide/Mapping_your_favorite_class.html][1]), as I need, he - dynamic attribute name :) 

Is there any solution for that?

P.S. Currently I have to create a dedicated container class for each typical set of key-value pairs I want to marshall to XML - it works, but I have to create way too many of these helper containers.

When I make a call to getDepartments method in the rest web service class it returns following exceptions. But If I change the type **Object** of the **payload** to **Department** in the Response class it returns the json response correctly. But since I need to use this Response class for different types of Classes I can&#39;t restring the payload to one class type. Can anyone please help me in this matter?

I cannot get JAXB to unmarshal a timestamp in a Resteasy JAX-RS server application.

My class looks like this:

jaxb unmarshal timestamp

I need to generate classes from xml that doesn&#39;t provide a schema. I understand this is near useless, but the fact is we have xml, it&#39;s structured, and we should be able to create a model from the xml. In the past I&#39;ve done it by hand, but the current xml documents I am working with are quite large and my time would probably be better spent building something that does what I need. But, I am guessing it has already been done, and I just can&#39;t find it.

Any pointers?

How to generate JAXB classes from just XML

I need to validate Class object against my schema in which I have provided regular expression to validate fields for auto generated JAXB classes. When I try to validate my class object I get below error:

&gt; unable to marshal type &quot;xyz&quot; as an element because it is missing an @XmlRootElement annotation

Here is the code that I use to validate my autogenerated class object: 

    jc = JAXBContext.newInstance(obj.getClass());
    source = new JAXBSource(jc, obj);
    Schema schema = schemaInjector.getSchema();
    Validator validator = schema.newValidator();
    validator.validate(source);

Is there any other way I can solve this?
