I want a font-size of a 11, but Chrome and Firefox are giving me 16.  When I examine the element in Chrome I see and look at the computed property I see:

    font-size: 16px;
      table - medium user agent stylesheet
      Style Attribute - 11px
      table - medium user agent stylesheet
      .v11gray - 11px style.css

Under computed styles in Firefox I get:

    font-size: 16px
       TABLE[0].style → 11px 	element
       .v11gray → 11px 	style.css:19

The last three lines are struck out.  Why is my css rule being overridden?  Are there steps I can take to find out?

I&#39;ve read a fair bit about resizing fonts recently, most of it deriding using px as an unforgivable crime (ok, maybe not that bad, you get the idea) because it doesn&#39;t resize properly in older browsers.

I really want to have a standard that I use myself, in the past that has been px, simply because it&#39;s simple, easy to understand and fairly easy to achieve the exact font sizes that are specified in designs - but I&#39;m now doubting using px.

I used em on a project recently because it needed text-resizing functionality which I made using jQuery. But I found it quite frustrating because of the way that em amplifies if you have two elements inside of each other both with an em size specified (hope that makes sense)

So I was wondering about using % for font resizing, I&#39;ve seen a couple of big websites use this technique (namely, Yahoo) and from what I understand it seems to have all of the advantages of em without the incredibly annoying amplification thing.

**So in short, I&#39;m just wondering if there are any issues with using % for font-sizing in CSS? Would it be better than using PX in terms of font-resizing? And are there any noticeable draw backs?**

Many times we need to auto-fit the font of the TextView to the boundaries given to it.

The problem
--

Sadly, even though there are many threads and posts (and suggested solutions) talking about this problem (example [here][1], [here][2] and [here][3]), none of them actually work well.

That&#39;s why, I&#39;ve decided to test each of them till I find the real deal.

I think that the requirements from such a textView should be:

 1. Should allow using any font, typeface, style, and set of characters.

 2. Should handle both width and height

 3. No truncation unless text cannot fit because of the limitation, we&#39;ve
    given to it (example: too long text, too small available size). However, we could request for horizontal/vertical scrollbar if we wish, just for those cases.

 4. Should allow multi-line or single-line. In case of multi-line, allow max &amp; min lines.

 5. Should not be slow in computation. Using a loop for finding the best size? At least optimize it and don&#39;t increment your sampling by 1 each time.

 6. In case of multi-line, should allow to prefer resizing or using more lines, and/or allow to choose the lines ourselves by using the &quot;\n&quot; character.

What I&#39;ve tried

I&#39;ve tried so many samples (including those of the links, I&#39;ve written about), and I&#39;ve also tried to modify them to handle the cases, I&#39;ve talked about, but none really work.

I&#39;ve made a sample project that allows me to visually see if the TextView auto-fits correctly.

Currently, my sample project only randomize the text (the English alphabet plus digits) and the size of the textView, and let it stay with single line, but even this doesn&#39;t work well on any of the samples I&#39;ve tried.

Does anybody know of a solution for this common problem that actually work?

Even a solution that has much less features that what I&#39;ve written about, for example one that has just a constant number of lines of text, and adjusts its font according to its size, yet never have weird glitches and having the text get too large/small compared to its available space.

Can anyone please tell me how can I change the font type and size of `UISegmentedControl`?

Is there any way in android to adjust the textsize in a textview to fit the space it occupies?

E.g. I&#39;m using a `TableLayout` and adding several `TextView`s to each row. Since I don&#39;t want the `TextView`s to wrap the text I rather see that it lowers the font size of the content.

There are [many][1] [articles][2] and [questions][3] about [percentage-sized vs other-sized][4] fonts. However, I can not find out WHAT the reference of the percent-value is supposed to be. I understand this is &#39;the same size in all browsers&#39;. I also read this, for instance:

But if you say &quot;ie 12 pt = 100%&quot;, then it means you first have to define `font-size: 12pt`. Is that how it works? You first define a size in an absolute measure, and then refer to this as &#39;100%&#39;? Does not make a lot of sense, as many samples say it is useful to put:

    body {
      font-size: 100%;
    }

So by doing this, _WHAT_ is the font size relative to? I notice that the size I see on my screen differs for every font. Arial looks way bigger than Times New Roman, for instance. Also, if I would just do this, body size = 100%, would _that_ mean that it will be the same on all browsers? Or only if I first define an absolute value?

I am getting there, but please bear with me. 

So, the % value relates to the default browser font size, if I understand correctly. Well, that is nice but gives me again several other questions:

 1. Is this standard size always the same for every browser version, or do they vary between versions?
 2. I ! found (see image below) the settings for Google Chrome (never looked at this before!), and I see standard &quot;serif&quot;, &quot;sans-serif&quot; and &quot;monospace&quot; settings. But how do I interpret this for other fonts? Say I define `font: 100% Georgia;`, what size will the browser take? Will it look up the standard size for serif, or has the &quot;Georgia&quot; font a standard size for the browser
 3. On several websites I [read][5] things like `Sizing text and line-height in ems, with a percentage specified on the body [..], was shown to provide **accurate, resizable text across all browsers** in common use today`. But from what I am learning now I believe that you should actually choose between either resizable text (using % or em, like what they recommend in this quote), or having &#39;accurate, consistent font-sizes across browsers&#39; (by using px or pt as a base). Is this correct?

CSS: 100% font size - 100% of what?

When using a **fixed width font**, I&#39;d like to specify the width of an HTML element in *characters*.

The &quot;em&quot; unit is supposed to be the width of the M character, so I should be able to use it to specify a width. This is an example:

Are there CSS or other reasons why Safari/iPhone would ignore some font-size settings? On my particular website Safari on the iPhone renders some font-size:13px text larger than font-size:15px text. Does it maybe not support font-size on some elements?

I&#39;m trying to make a font in a div responsive to the browser window. So far, it has worked perfectly, but the parent div has a `max-width` of `525px`. Resizing the browser further will not make the font stop resizing. For example if there are elements with font-size less then 12px, then they will change to 12px.

Apparently once paragraph of text reaches a certain length, Google Chrome on Android decides to resize the text and make it larger (causing all kinds of fun). Now I have a website where about half of the `p`-tags follow the size I&#39;ve set and the other half change as they please - apparently depending on the length of the paragraph.

I can&#39;t seem to modify the font size of a UILabel with the following code:

    itemTitle.font = [UIFont systemFontOfSize:25];

As i increase the number 25 to something greater, it seems to only add a top margin to the label, which consequently pushes the text down so much, so that the text gets cut off at the bottom or completely overflows.

i have another UILabel elsewhere with systemFontOfSize 25, and it&#39;s much smaller than the itemTitle text.  What&#39;s going on?  Isn&#39;t 25 supposed to be an absolute value?  

i am so confused on how to programmatically change font size of uilabels.

When I resize the browser to mobile size the large font doesn&#39;t adjust and causes the browser to include a horizontal scroll to accommodate for the large text.

I&#39;ve noticed that on the **Zurb Foundation 3** Typography [example page][1], the headers adapt to the browser as it is compressed and expanded. 

Am I missing something really obvious? How do I achieve this?

I was reading a question on here trying to get the font size of a text.  The answer they gave was to get the pixel size using a measure method.  All i want to be able to do is get the font size value so i can change it.

For example:

I was under the impression that 100% would somehow refer to the size of the browser window, but apparently not because it&#39;s always 16 pixels whether the window is resized down to a mobile width or full-blown widescreen desktop.

How can I make the text on my site scale in relation to its container? I tried using `em`, but this doesn&#39;t scale either.

My reasoning is that things like my menu become squished when you resize, so I need to reduce the `px` `font-size` of `.menuItem` among other elements in relation to the width of the container. (For example, in the menu on a large desktop, `22px` works perfectly. Move down to tablet width and `16px` is more appropriate.)

I&#39;m aware I can add breakpoints, but I really want the text to scale as *well* as having extra breakpoints, otherwise, I&#39;ll end up with hundreds of breakpoints for every 100pixels decrease in width to control the text.

I have a few TextBlocks in WPF in a Grid that I would like to scale depending on their available width / height. When I searched for automatically scaling Font size the typical suggestion is to put the TextBlock into a ViewBox.

So I did this:

And it scales the font for each TextBlock automatically. However, this looks funny because if one of the TextBlocks has longer text then it will be in a smaller font while it&#39;s neighboring grid elements will be in a larger font. I want the Font size to scale by group, perhaps it would be nice if I could specify a &quot;SharedSizeGroup&quot; for a set of controls to auto size their font. 

e.g.

The first text blocks text might be &quot;3/26/2013 10:45:30 AM&quot;, and the second TextBlocks text might say &quot;FileName.ext&quot;. If these are across the width of a window, and the user begins resizing the window smaller and smaller. The date will start making its font smaller than the file name, depending on the length of the file name.

Ideally, once one of the text fields starts to resize the font point size, they would all match. Has anyone came up with a solution for this or can give me a shot at how you would make it work? If it requires custom code then hopefully we / I could repackage it into a custom Blend or Attached Behavior so that is re-usable for the future. I think it is a pretty general problem, but I wasn&#39;t able to find anything on it by searching.

Honestly, missing hte proportional columns is probably fine with me. I wouldn&#39;t mind it AutoSizing the columns to make smart use of the space, but it has to span the entire width of the window.

Here, I would want to limit how big the font can get, so it doesn&#39;t waste vertical window real estate. **I&#39;m expecting the output to be aligned left, center, and right with the Font being as big as possible up to the desired maximum size.**

The solution you propose is not bad (And is the best yet) but it does have some limitations. For example, initially I wanted my columns to be proportional (2nd one should be centered). For example, my TextBlocks might be labeling the **start, center, and stop of a graph** where alignment matters.

And here is the result. Notice it does not know that it is getting clipped early on, and then when it substitutes ViewBox it looks as if the Grid defaults to column size &quot;Auto&quot; and no longer aligns center.
