I have been working on a few Node apps, and I&#39;ve been looking for a good pattern of storing deployment-related settings. In the Django world (where I come from), the common practise would be to have a `settings.py` file containing the standard settings (timezone, etc), and then a `local_settings.py` for deployment specific settings, ie. what database to talk to, what memcache socket, e-mail address for the admins and so on.

I have been looking for similar patterns for Node. Just a config file would be nice, so it does not have to be jammed in with everything else in `app.js`, but I find it important to have a way to have server-specific configuration in a file that is not in source control. The same app could well be deployed across different servers with wildly different settings, and having to deal with merge conflicts and all that is not my idea of fun.

So is there some kind of framework/tool for this, or does everyone just hack something together themselves?

What I want to achieve is very simple: I have a Windows Forms (.NET 3.5) application that uses a path for reading information. This path can be modified by the user, by using the options form I provide.

Now, I want to save the path value to a file for later use. This would be one of the many settings saved to this file. This file would sit directly in the application folder.

I understand three options are available:

 - ConfigurationSettings file (appname.exe.config)
 - Registry
 - Custom XML file

I read that the .NET configuration file is not foreseen for saving values back to it. As for the registry, I would like to get as far away from it as possible.

Does this mean that I should use a custom XML file to save configuration settings?

If so, I would like to see code example of that (C#).

I have seen other discussions on this subject, but it is still not clear to me.

According to [yaml.org][1], the official file extension is `.yaml`.

The part I am missing is what to do for the handler. Originally, I tried to implement an `IConfigurationSectionHandler` but found two things:

1. it didn&#39;t work

We recently had an issue with an Eclipse project for one of our team members. Tomcat was not deploying JARs of the application. 

We eventually noticed the `.classpath` Eclipse file was not the same as for the team members where the project was OK. We replaced the `.classpath` file with one from a project that was OK and the Tomcat deploy was complete.

Just out of curiosity and to know at what to look in the future if something is wrong, **what is  inside the `.classpath` and `.project` files. What can I add in there, what does it all mean?**

I recently changed my password and have to change my maven settings.xml file to reflect that. However, no matter what I do in the settings.xml file, the changed password just won&#39;t get picked up. It seems to suggest that maven by default is using a &quot;wrong&quot; settings.xml

Python&#39;s standard library has modules for **configuration file parsing** ([configparser][1]), **environment variable reading** ([os.environ][2]), and **command-line argument parsing** ([argparse][3]). I want to write a program that does all those, and also:

* Has a **cascade of option values**:
  * default option values, overridden by
  * config file options, overridden by
  * environment variables, overridden by
  * command-line options.

* Allows one or more **configuration file locations specified on the command line** with e.g. `--config-file foo.conf`, and reads that (either instead of, or additional to, the usual configuration file). This must still obey the above cascade.

* Allows **option definitions in a single place** to determine the parsing behaviour for configuration files and the command line.

* Unifies the parsed options into a **single collection of option values** for the rest of the program to access without caring where they came from.

Everything I need is apparently in the Python standard library, but they don&#39;t work together smoothly.

How can I achieve this with minimum deviation from the Python standard library?

Parse config files, environment, and command-line arguments, to get a single collection of options

**Background:**

Currently we&#39;re using Docker and Docker Compose for our services. We have externalized the configuration for different environments into files that define environment variables read by the application. For example a `prod.env` file:

    ENV_VAR_ONE=Something Prod
    ENV_VAR_TWO=Something else Prod

and a `test.env` file:

    ENV_VAR_ONE=Something Test
    ENV_VAR_TWO=Something else Test

Thus we can simply use the `prod.env` or `test.env` file when starting the container:
   

    docker run --env-file prod.env &lt;image&gt;

Our application then picks up its configuration based on the environment variables defined in `prod.env`. 

**Questions:**

1. Is there a way to provide environment variables from a file in Kubernetes (for example when defining a pod) instead of hardcoding them like this:

Creating a config file in PHP

I have tried to use Python&#39;s [ConfigParser][1] module to save settings. For my app it&#39;s important that I preserve the case of each name in my sections. The docs mention that passing str() to [ConfigParser.optionxform()][2] would accomplish this, but it doesn&#39;t work for me. The names are all lowercase. Am I missing something?

Preserve case in ConfigParser?

I am using `ConfigParser` to read the runtime configuration of a script.

I would like to have the flexibility of not providing a section name (there are scripts which are simple enough; they don&#39;t need a &#39;section&#39;). `ConfigParser` will throw a `NoSectionError` exception, and will not accept the file.

How can I make ConfigParser simply retrieve the `(key, value)` tuples of a config file without section names? 

For instance:

    key1=val1
    key2:val2

I would rather not write to the config file.

Why does Visual Studio tell me that the AddJsonFile() method is not defined?

I have been mulling over config files and their relationship to code for a while now and depending on the day and direction of the wind my opinions seem to change.  More and more though I keep coming back to the realization I first had while learning Lisp: there is little difference between data and code.  This seems doubly true for config files.  When looked at in the right light a Perl script is little more than a config file for perl.  This tends to have fairly heavy consequences for tasks such as QA and divisions of labor like who should be responsible for changing config files.

The creep from config file to full fledged language is generally slow and seems to be driven by the desire to have a generic system.  Most projects seem to start out small with a few config items like where to write logs, where to look for data, user names and passwords, etc.  But then they start to grow: features start to be able to be turned on or off, the timings and order of operations start to be controlled, and, inevitably, someone wants to start adding logic to it (e.g. use 10 if the machine is X and 15 if the machine is Y).  At a certain point the config file becomes a domain specific language, and a poorly written one at that.

Now that I have rambled on to set the stage, here are my questions:

 1. What is the true purpose of a config
    file?
 2. Should an attempt be made to keep
    config files simple?
 3. Who should be responsible for making
    changes to them (developers, users,
    admins, etc.)?
 4. Should they be source controlled
    (see question 3)?

As I said earlier my answers to these questions shift constantly, but right now I am thinking:

 1. to allow a non-programmers to change
    large chunks of behaviour quickly
 2. yes, anything that is not coarsely
    grained should be in code
 3. users should be responsible for
    config files and programmers should
    be responsible for a configuration
    layer between config files and code
    that gives more fine grained control
    of the application
 4. no, but the finer grained middle layer should be

How do you dynamically reload fish config files as you would in bash?

I have a Python application which needs quite a few (~30) configuration parameters. Up to now, I used the OptionParser class to define default values in the app itself, with the possibility to change individual parameters at the command line when invoking the application.

Now I would like to use &#39;proper&#39; configuration files, for example from the ConfigParser class. At the same time, users should still be able to change individual parameters at the command line.

I was wondering if there is any way to combine the two steps, e.g. use optparse (or the newer argparse) to handle command line options, but reading the default values from a config file in ConfigParse syntax.

Any ideas how to do this in an easy way? I don&#39;t really fancy manually invoking ConfigParse, and then manually setting all defaults of all the options to the appropriate values...


Which is the best way to allow configuration options be overridden at the command line in Python?

Does anyone know of a good example of how to expose a WCF service programatically without the use of a configuration file? I know the service object model is much richer now with WCF, so I know it&#39;s possible. I just have not seen an example of how to do so. Conversely, I would like to see how consuming without a configuration file is done as well.

Before anyone asks, I have a very specific need to do this without configuration files. I would normally not recommend such a practice, but as I said, there is a very specific need in this case.

In large and complex software products managing configurable settings becomes a major pain. Two approaches I&#39;ve seen to the problem are: 

 - have each component in the system load its own configuration from config files or registry settings. 
 - have a settings loader class that loads all the configurable system settings and have each component query the settings loader for its settings. 

These approaches both feel wrong to me. 

**Are there any design patterns that could be used to simplify the problem?** Maybe something that would take advantage of the dependency injection technique.

I would like to ship a configuration profile with my iPhone application, and install it if needed. 

Mind you, we&#39;re talking about a configuration profile, not a provisioning profile.

First off, such a task is possible. If you place a config profile on a Web page and click on it from Safari, it will get installed. If you e-mail a profile and click the attachment, it will install as well. &quot;Installed&quot; in this case means &quot;The installation UI is invoked&quot; - but I could not even get that far.

So I was working under the theory that initiating a profile installation involves navigating to it as a URL. I added the profile to my app bundle.

**A)** First, I tried [sharedApp openURL] with the file:// URL into my bundle. No such luck - nothing happens.

**B)** I then added an HTML page to my bundle that has a link to the profile, and loaded it into a UIWebView. Clicking on the link does nothing. Loading an identical page from a Web server in Safari, however, works fine - the link is clickable, the profile installs. I provided a UIWebViewDelegate, answering YES to every navigation request - no difference.

**C)** Then I tried to load the same Web page from my bundle in Safari (using [sharedApp openURL] - nothing happens. I guess, Safari cannot see files inside my app bundle.

**D)** Uploading the page and the profile on a Web server is doable, but a pain on the organizational level, not to mention an extra source of failures (what if no 3G coverage? etc.).



**So my big question is: **how do I install a profile programmatically?**

And the little questions are: what can make a link non-clickable within a UIWebView? Is it possible to load a file:// URL from *my* bundle in Safari? If not, is there a local location on iPhone where I can place files and Safari can find them?

**EDIT on B):** the problem is somehow in the fact that we&#39;re linking to a profile. I renamed it from .mobileconfig to .xml (&#39;cause it&#39;s really XML), altered the link. And the link worked in my UIWebView. Renamed it back - same stuff. It looks as if UIWebView is reluctant to do application-wide stuff - since installation of the profile closes the app. I tried telling it that it&#39;s OK - by means of UIWebViewDelegate - but that did not convince. Same behavior for mailto: URLs within UIWebView.

**For mailto:** URLs the common technique is to translate them into [openURL] calls, but that doesn&#39;t quite work for my case, see scenario A.

For itms: URLs, however, UIWebView works as expected...

**EDIT2:** tried feeding a data URL to Safari via [openURL] - does not work, see here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/641461/iphone-open-data-url-in-safari

**EDIT3:** found a lot of info on how Safari does not support file:// URLs. UIWebView, however, very much does. Also, Safari on the simulator open them just fine. The latter bit is the most frustrating.

**EDIT4:** I never found a solution. Instead, I put together a two-bit Web interface where the users can order the profile e-mailed to them.

I&#39;m looking for a file where Eclipse stores its launch configurations. I&#39;m doing some Java development in Ubuntu. 

One of the executables i&#39;m developing requires an output from another executable as a argument to it. So say, the output of &#39;B&#39; needs to be passed as a commandline argument to &#39;A&#39;. In the Eclipse, I don&#39;t want to manually change the &quot;Run Configuration&quot; every time. Where does Eclipse store these configurations esp the arguments?

I found a &quot;eclipseArguments.txt&quot; in the extras folder of the project but this isn&#39;t the same as the arguments I&#39;m passing into the Run Configurations. The &quot;.project&quot; file doesn&#39;t contain it either. I&#39;m confused.

Eclipse Java launch configuration file path

I&#39;m writing a short script with a few simple variables at the top of the page. I want to work on them with a friend, but we aren&#39;t sure how to manage the variables needing to be changed after pulling each time for one of us, adding unnecessary junk to git status. I thought about just creating different named branches for each of us, and then the master will just have example usernames set, but it seems silly to have to do all that extra work merging. We could have the variables passed to the script as options, but that isn&#39;t desired, nor is separating it out to another separate configuration file. It would be great to have something like a .gitignore but for only ignore a few lines in a file.

How can this be elegantly managed? How is this problem usually managed?

I have a file with database settings in my project which I have set to some defaults. The file is tracked by Mercurial and checked in. Since this file will be edited with different values various developer machines, is there a way I can tell Mercurial to ignore new changes to this file?

I tried adding the file to the `.hgignore` file, but since the file is tracked it isn&#39;t ignored. This is alright and good in other situations, but I am wondering if there is something I can do here?

I&#39;ve seen people using *.cfg (Python Buildout), *.xml (Gnome), *.json (Chrome extension), *.yaml (Google App Engine), *.ini and even *.py for app configuration files (like Django).

My question is: why there are so many different configuration file formats? I can see an advantage from a xml vs json approach (much less verbose) or a Python one (sometimes you have a Python app and don&#39;t want to use a specific module just to parse a config file), but what about the other approaches?

I know there are even more formats than those configuration files I exemplified. What are really their advantages in comparison to each other? Historical reasons? Compatibility with different systems?

I have a config with around 100 rules, and running eslint on my project with all these rules takes around 10 seconds. I&#39;d like to identify the slowest rules and eliminate some of them. How do I do this? Is there any profiler tool for eslint?

I recently installed version 2017.2 of IntelliJ IDEA. I would like to keep my settings from my old 2017.1 version. IntelliJ&#39;s [support site](https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/install-and-set-up-intellij-idea.html#r_Install_and_set_up__product_.xmld320216e288) shows the following dialog box that is supposed to show up when you run the newly installed version for the first time.

However, neither when I was installing the new version, nor when I ran the new version for the first time, was I ever shown this dialog box. I attempted to import settings from my old version via  the `File | Import Settings` menu option, but it expects a `.jar` file that would have been exported from an old version by going to `File | Export Settings`, which I did not do in the old version before installing the new one.

I do still have all of the config from my old version in `%MY_HOME_DIR%/.IntelliJIdea2017.1`.
How can I import those settings in the same way that the above dialog box would have done had it shown up when I opened the new version for the first time?

How to programmatically modify WCF app.config endpoint address setting?

I am doing a project to build `thread pooled web server`, in which I have to set 

- the port number on which server listens.
- How many threads are there in thread pool
- Absolute Path of the root directory, and so many points.

One way is to hard code all these variables in the code, that I did. But professionally it is not good.

Now, I want to make one configuration file, in which I put all these data, and at the run time my code fetches these.

How can I make configuration file for the above task ?
