We are writing a new application, and while testing, we will need a bunch of dummy data. I&#39;ve added that data by using MS Access to dump excel files into the relevant tables.

Every so often, we want to &quot;refresh&quot; the relevant tables, which means dropping them all, re-creating them, and running a saved MS Access append query.

The first part (dropping &amp; re-creating) is an easy sql script, but the last part makes me cringe. I want a single setup script that has a bunch of INSERTs to regenerate the dummy data.

I have the data in the tables now. What is the best way to automatically generate a big list of INSERT statements from that dataset?

The only way I can think of doing it is to save the table to an excel sheet and then write an excel formula to create an INSERT for every row, which is surely not the best way.

Seeking useful Eclipse Java code templates

I&#39;m looking for the rules involving passing C++ templates functions as arguments.

This is supported by C++ as shown by an example here:

Learning about this technique is difficult, however. [Googling for &quot;function as a template argument&quot;][1] doesn&#39;t lead to much. And the classic [C++ Templates The Complete Guide][2] surprisingly also doesn&#39;t discuss it (at least not from my search).

The questions I have are whether this is valid C++ (or just some widely supported extension).

Also, is there a way to allow a functor with the same signature to be used interchangeably with explicit functions during this kind of template invocation?

The following does **not** work in the above program, at least in [Visual C++][3], because the syntax is obviously wrong. It&#39;d be nice to be able to switch out a function for a functor and vice versa, similar to the way you can pass a function pointer or functor to the std::sort algorithm if you want to define a custom comparison operation.

When class implements Serializable in Eclipse, I have two options: add default `serialVersionUID(1L)` or generated `serialVersionUID(3567653491060394677L)`. I think that first one is cooler, but many times I saw people using the second option. Is there any reason to generate `long serialVersionUID`?

This is a debate I&#39;m taking a part in. I would like to get more opinions and points of view.

We have some classes that are generated in build time to handle DB operations (in This specific case, with SubSonic, but I don&#39;t think it is very important for the question). The generation is set as a pre-build step in Visual Studio. So every time a developer (or the official build process) runs a build, these classes are generated, and then compiled into the project.

Now some people are claiming, that having these classes saved in source control could cause confusion, in case the code you get, doesn&#39;t match what would have been generated in your own environment.

I would like to have a way to trace back the history of the code, even if it is usually treated as a black box.

Any arguments or counter arguments?

The decision should be made based on more than one parameter. Should I store generated code in source control

I&#39;m generating the bulk of my ASP.NET MVC scaffolding code. All generated files are partial classes which use standard naming conventions. For example, my employee controller file is named EmployeeController.cs.  If I wish to extend the EmployeeController with custom, non-generated logic, I create a second partial class file named EmployeeControllerCustom.cs. I separate the custom and generated logic into two different files so the next time I generate the EmployeeController my custom changes aren&#39;t overwritten. Adding the &quot;Custom&quot; suffix to the file name seems reasonable to me, but is there a more established partial class file naming convention which I should be following?

I&#39;m doing some research in code generation from xsd schema files. 
My requirements:

  - Must generate C# 2.0 code (or above), using generic collections where needed.
  - Must generate comments from the xsd comments
  - Must generate fully serializable code.
  - Should be able to generate resuable basetypes when generating from multiple xsd&#39;s with the same includes.

I have found the following options:

 1. Use xsd.exe (supplied with the SDK and Visual Studio)
 2. XSDCodeGen from [Daniel Cazzulino][3]

 5. [XsdObjectGen][6] by Microsoft
 6. [XSDClassGen][7] (Seems to be missing in action)

Did I miss any? Because (1), (2) and (5) do not generate 2.0 code, and I have problems with serializing code from (3). What do you use when generating code?

I need a regular expression that I can use in VBScript and .NET that will return only the numbers that are found in a string.

A framework I&#39;m using expects `Action` classes to be defined that have a `doAction(...)` method, by convention. The framework inspects these classes at runtime to see what type of parameters are available in their `doAction()` method. For example: doAction(**String** a, **Integer** b)

I&#39;d like each class to be able to programatically generate its `doAction()` method with various parameters, just-in-time when it is inspected.  The body of the method can be empty.

I have done far more C++ programming than &quot;plain old C&quot; programming.  One thing I sorely miss when programming in plain C is type-safe generic data structures, which are provided in C++ via templates.

For sake of concreteness, consider a generic singly linked list.  In C++, it is a simple matter to define your own template class, and then instantiate it for the types you need.

In C, I can think of a few ways of implementing a generic singly linked list:

1. Write the linked list type(s) and supporting procedures once, using void pointers to go around the type system.
2. Write preprocessor macros taking the necessary type names, etc, to generate a type-specific version of the data structure and supporting procedures.
3. Use a more sophisticated, stand-alone tool to generate the code for the types you need.

I don&#39;t like option 1, as it is subverts the type system, and would likely have worse performance than a specialized type-specific implementation.  Using a uniform representation of the data structure for all types, and casting to/from void pointers, so far as I can see, necessitates an indirection that would be avoided by an implementation specialized for the element type.

Option 2 doesn&#39;t require any extra tools, but it feels somewhat clunky, and could give bad compiler errors when used improperly.

Option 3 could give better compiler error messages than option 2, as the specialized data structure code would reside in expanded form that could be opened in an editor and inspected by the programmer (as opposed to code generated by preprocessor macros).  However, this option is the most heavyweight, a sort of &quot;poor-man&#39;s templates&quot;.  I have used this approach before, using a simple sed script to specialize a &quot;templated&quot; version of some C code.

I would like to program my future &quot;low-level&quot; projects in C rather than C++, but have been frightened by the thought of rewriting common data structures for each specific type.

What experience do people have with this issue?  Are there good libraries of generic data structures and algorithms in C that do not go with Option 1 (i.e. casting to and from void pointers, which sacrifices type safety and adds a level of indirection)?

Does anyone know a way to auto-generate database tables for a given class?  I&#39;m not looking for an entire persistence layer - I already have a data access solution I&#39;m using, but I suddenly have to store a lot of information from a large number of classes and I really don&#39;t want to have to create all these tables by hand. I&#39;ve looked at trying to auto-generate the database scripts by myself using reflection to enumerate through each class&#39; properties, but it&#39;s clunky and the complex data types have me stumped.

I&#39;m dealing with a problem in my `Visual Paradigm project`. I created some `Java sources` and I did instant `Reverse` with them. Then I dragged the model elements of the classes to the Class diagram. I modified the class diagram adding some operations to these classes and I tried to update the code. 

But I got the warning

After learning a bit of how LLVM work I&#39;m really excited about how portable low-level code can be generated and how modular this &#39;thing&#39; is built.

But I discovered today the existence of C-- that seems to share some concepts with LLVM.

So I&#39;m looking for some information helping me understand the main differences between these two projects... and why both exist.

Generate a Version.java file in Maven

I&#39;m using Google Protocol Buffers to generate some Java classes for my project. Using Maven 2 and its &quot;antrun&quot; plugin, these classes are freshly generated before compile, output to target/generated-sources and put on the classpath during the build. So building the project from the POM is no problem.

However, Eclipse doesn&#39;t know how to resolve the generated class, because the folder it&#39;s in doesn&#39;t seem to be on the IDE&#39;s classpath during development. I&#39;m using m2eclipse and have it manage dependencies for me, so I had expected Maven to take care of this.

To ensure the assembly is what we want, we have 3 conditions :

 - the assembly is not in the GAC
 - the assembly is no dynamic
 - the assembly is not generated (to avoid temporary asp.net files

The last problem I meet is when the base page is defined in a separate assembly.
(I use ASP.Net MVC, but it&#39;ll be the same with ASP.Net).
In that particular case, it&#39;s that separate assembly that is returned, not the one containing the page.

What I am looking for now is :

1) Are my assembly validation conditions enough ? (I may have forgotten cases)

2) Is there a way, from a given code-generated assembly in the ASP.Net temporary folder, to get information about the project that contains that Page / View ?
(I think not, but who knows...)



GetEntryAssembly for web applications

I like intellij&#39;s code/file templates, they are working really well for me for single files but it would be great to be able to create multiple files/classes at once.

I did find [this question](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/8142937/does-intellij-support-any-kind-of-templating-to-create-multiple-files-automatica) but since it has been a few years since I was hoping that things might have changed.

We are using the mvp pattern in our application so every time we want to create a new view, it requires two classes and two interfaces, which are always in the same pattern. It would be awesome if we could generate all of the infrastructure for this and link up the classes.

Any suggestions or new information would be appreciated?
Maybe it is time to log a feature request with [JetBrains](http://www.jetbrains.com)?

Is there a way to generate multiple files/classes with intellij code/file templates?

**What are some pros/cons for using the Reflection.Emit library versus CodeDOM for dynamically generating code at runtime?**

I am trying to generate some (relatively complicated) dynamic classes in a system based on metadata available at runtime in XML form. I will be generating classes that extend existing classes in the application assembly, implementing additional interfaces, adding methods, and overriding virtual and abstract members.

I want to make sure I select the appropriate technique before I get too deep into the implementation. Any information about how these different code-generation techniques differ would be helpful. Also, any information on open-source libraries that simplify or streamline working wither either API would be useful as well.

Reflection.Emit vs CodeDOM

I&#39;m doing code generation in Jinja2 and I frequently want to iterate through two lists together (i.e. variables names and types), is there a simple way to do this or do I need to just pass a pre-zipped list? I was unable to find such a function in the [docs][1] or googling.
